Intraocular neuroectodermal embryonal tumor in two rabbits.

Spontaneous intraocular tumors are rarely reported in rabbits, despite their widespread use as laboratory animals. We describe two cases of intraocular neuroectodermal embryonal tumors, formerly primitive neuroectodermal tumors, in young rabbits. Histologically, both tumors exhibited prominent rosette or pseudorosettes, consistent with the histomorphology seen in human tumors. The neuroectodermal subtype is supported by immunoreactivity for the neuronal markers, SRY-box transcription factor 2, microtubule-associated protein 2, neuronal nuclear protein, and neuron-specific enolase. Bionate Biocompatibility: In Vivo Study in Rabbits.

Response to foreign materials includes local tissue reaction, osteolysis, implant loosening, and migration to lymph nodes and organs. Bionate 80A human explants show minor wear and slight local tissue reaction, but we do not know the response at the spinal cord, nerve roots, lymph nodes, or distant organs. This study aims to figure out reactions against Bionate 80A when implanted at the spinal epidural space of 24 20-week-old New Zealand white rabbits. In one group of 12 rabbits, we implanted Bionate 80A on the spinal epidural space, and another group of 12 rabbits was used as the control grou

Intestinal Dysbiosis in Young Cystic Fibrosis Rabbits.

Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) often experience gastrointestinal (GI) abnormalities. In recent years, the intestinal microbiome has been postulated as a contributor to the development of CF-associated GI complications, hence representing a potential therapeutic target for treatment. We recently developed a rabbit model of CF, which is shown to manifest many human patient-like pathological changes, including intestinal obstruction. Here, we investigated the feces microbiome in young CF rabbits in the absence of antibiotics treatment. Stool samples were collected from seven- to nine-week-

Coxofemoral luxation in pet rabbits: nine cases.

Of the pet rabbits presented at one private practice between August 2011 and August 2016 (n=1369), 5·6% presented with a traumatic orthopaedic injury. Of these, 7·8% (n=6) presented with traumatic coxofemoral luxation, the most frequently observed type of luxation. Three cases of non-traumatic coxofemoral luxation in pet rabbits are also discussed. Eight rabbits presented with craniodorsal luxation and one with caudoventral luxation. Five rabbits were initially treated using closed reduction and an Ehmer sling under sedation. Two rabbits responded satisfactorily to closed reduction; their band

Surgical Management of Ear Diseases in Rabbits.

Otitis externa and media are frequently diagnosed disorders in rabbits and are particularly common in lop-eared breeds because of the specific anatomy of the ear canal. Medical management for otitis externa and media often provides only a temporary improvement in clinical signs. Surgery by means of partial or total ear canal ablation (PECA or TECA) combined with lateral bulla osteotomy (LBO) represents a feasible approach that is well tolerated and provides a good clinical outcome. Short-term complications associated with PECA/TECA-LBO include facial nerve paralysis and vestibular disease.

Analysis of transplant rejection in rabbits aponeurosis.

OBJECTIVE: To study the feasibility of heterologous aponeurosis to close the abdominal wall of rabbits emphasizing the rejection process. METHODS: This project was approved by the Animals Care Committee of the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo, and it was carried out at the Experimental Surgery and Technical Unit. Four red female rabbits exchanged abdominal wall aponeurosis with other four white male animals. Two rabbits just had it removed and replaced to be the control group for the healing process. Animals were evaluated once a day, and after 7 days they were sacrifi

Immunostimulant effect of Egyptian propolis in rabbits.

The present experiment was conducted to study the effect of ethanolic extract of Egyptian propolis given alone or in combination with inactivated Pasteurella multocida vaccine on rabbits challenged with a virulent strain of Pasteurella multocida. Fifty-six New-Zealand rabbits, 6-8 weeks old and non-vaccinated against pasteurellosis, were randomly divided into eight equal groups. The first group was kept as a control for the experiment. The other groups received different treatments with propolis extract, inactivated vaccine, or both. The experiment continued for seven weeks during which clinic

Congestive heart failure in two pet rabbits.

This case report describes congestive heart failure with pleural effusion in two middle-aged, pet house rabbits. Both had a history of acute onset dyspnoea, weakness and weight loss. Bi-atrial enlargement was seen on echocardiography in both rabbits. One rabbit had atrial fibrillation and ventricular premature complexes identified on electrocardiography. There was a radiographically evident pleural effusion in both rabbits and thoracocentesis was undertaken in one rabbit. These findings were confirmed on post-mortem examination. The aetiology for the underlying heart disease was not found, but

Diastolic function during hemorrhagic shock in rabbits.

Hemorrhage (H) is associated with a left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. However, the diastolic function has not been studied in detail. The main goal was to assess the diastolic function both during and 120 min after bleeding, in the absence and in the presence of L-NAME. Also, the changes in mRNA and protein expression of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms were determined. New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups: Sham group, H group (hemorrhage 20% blood volume), and H L-NAME group (hemorrhage treated with L-NAME). We evaluated systolic and diastolic ventricular functions in vivo

Liver lobe torsion in three adult rabbits.

This paper describes three cases of liver lobe torsion in rabbits presenting with anorexia, lethargy, jaundice and abdominal pain. This condition was associated with anaemia and elevation of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyl transferase. Abnormal radiological findings included hepatomegaly, gas-filled intestinal loops consistent with gastrointestinal ileus and ascites. Ultrasonographic findings included heterogeneous liver parenchyma, free abdominal fluid and reduced bowel motility. Diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination of the liver in a

Age-related peridural hyperemia in craniosynostotic rabbits.

OBJECTIVE: Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of the calvarial sutures and is associated with aesthetic impairment and secondary damage to brain growth. Associated neurological injuries can result from increased intracranial pressure (ICP) and abnormal cerebral blood flow (CBF). Arterial spin-labeling (ASL) MRI was used to assess regional CBF in developing rabbits with early-onset coronal suture synostosis (EOCS) and age-matched wild-type controls (WT). METHODS: Rabbits were subjected to ASL MRI at or near 10, 25, or 42 days of age. Differences in regional CBF were assessed using one-wa

Noggin inhibits postoperative resynostosis in craniosynostotic rabbits.

UNLABELLED: Inhibition of bone formation after surgery to correct craniosynostosis would alleviate the need for secondary surgeries and decrease morbidity and mortality. This study used a single dose of Noggin protein to prevent resynostosis and improve postoperative outcomes in a rabbit model of craniosynostosis. INTRODUCTION: Craniosynostosis is defined as the premature fusion of one or more of the cranial sutures, which causes secondary deformations of the cranial vault, cranial base, and brain. Current surgical intervention involves extirpation of the fused suture to allow unrestricted br

Ocular lesions in Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic rabbits.

Hyperlipidemic ocular lesions are described for Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits. Male WHHL rabbits 8 months old exhibited serum hyperlipidemia and ophthalmoscopically yellowish-white lesions along the corneoscleral junction and in the iris. Histopathologically, foamy macrophages aggregated in the stroma of the cornea, iris, and ciliary body were observed. These findings have been interpreted as lipid keratopathy. In addition, multiple clusters of a large number of foamy macrophages occurred throughout the choroid and sclera in association with the blood vessels. The lesions in

Doxapram inhibits carotid sinus baroreceptors in rabbits.

1 To clarify the effects of doxapram on the baroreflex, we recorded carotid sinus nerve (CSN) activity in isolated and perfused carotid artery bifurcations of rabbits. 2 The CSN activity due to chemoreceptor stimulation was blocked by resection of the nerve branches from the carotid body. After the resection, the CSN activity was correlated to increase of carotid sinus (CS) pressure. 3 Administration of doxapram reduced the CSN activity originating from baroreceptors. The effect of doxapram on baroreceptors was dose dependent and reversible. 4 It is unlikely that doxapram altered CS wall mecha

Fadolmidine-induced ocular hypotension in normotensive rabbits.

Fadolmidine, a novel selective alpha2-adrenoceptor agonist, was evaluated for its efficacy to lower intraocular pressure in normotensive rabbits (n=5-6). The dose-response profile between 0.004 microg and 12.5 microg of fadolmidine was determined. The effect of pH on the partition of fadolmidine was studied in order to select an optimal pH for topical fadolmidine administration. After topical administration, fadolmidine significantly lowered the intraocular pressure in normotensive rabbits. The onset of action was immediate, with no initial increase in intraocular pressure. A significant decre

Pharmacokinetics of topically applied sparfloxacin in rabbits.

PURPOSE: Fluoroquinolones are antimicrobial agents that have a broad spectrum of activity and are widely used against many of the ocular pathogens, responsible for conjunctivitis, blepharitis, corneal ulcers etc. The aim of our study was to evaluate the ocular pharmacokinetics of sparfloxacin (0.3% w/v) in the aqueous humour of rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pharmacokinetics of topically administered sparfloxacin were determined after a single application of 50 microl topically. The aqueous humour samples were collected at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 hours after instillation. High Perfo

[Suckling mortality in fattening rabbits in Switzerland].

The aims of this project were to determine mortality rate and aetiology of losses in suckling rabbits during the first 14 days of life. Post-mortem examinations were done on 1096 siblings from 8 conventional farms. Mortality rates varied from 0 to 17.0%. Main death causes were non-infectious and included stillbirth (13.9%), weakness due to reduced birth weight (3.0%), starvation (11.6%), runting (11.6%), cannibalism (0.5%) and scattering (7.9%). The last four causes mainly attributed to insufficient nursing by the doe. Only 21.8% of the losses were of infectious aetiology.

Intrauterine repair of gastroschisis in fetal rabbits.

OBJECTIVE: Infants with gastroschisis (GS) still face severe morbidity. Prenatal closure may prevent gastrointestinal organ damage, but intrauterine GS repair (GSR) has not been established yet. METHODS: In New Zealand White rabbits we developed and compared GS versus GSR: creation of GS was achieved by hysterotomy, right-sided laparotomy of the fetus and pressure on the abdominal wall to provoke evisceration. GSR was accomplished by careful reposition of eviscerated organs and a running suture of the fetal abdominal wall. For study purposes, 18 animals were divided equally into 3 groups: GS,

Reflexogenic areas for velopharyngeal closure in rabbits.

Responsive areas for velopharyngeal closure were examined by recording diaphragmatic and superior pharyngeal constrictor activities of anesthetized rabbits. Pressure stimulation was applied with a cotton applicator to the mucosae of three pharyngeal areas: the anterior (palatal) and posterior walls of the nasopharynx and the posterior wall of the oropharynx. The intensity and duration of the stimulation were around 9.0 gf and 0.43 sec, respectively. Velopharyngeal closure was elicited more frequently from the posterior wall of the nasopharynx than the other two areas tested. The higher respons
