The host age related occurrence of Alaria alata in wild canids in Latvia.

The trematode Alaria alata has a complex life cycle in which carnivore mammals may become infected by feeding on mesocercariae-infected, second intermediate hosts or paratenic hosts. Afterwards, young flukes migrate through various organs of the definitive host, including the diaphragm and the lungs, before reaching the small intestine. The aim of the present study was to establish the prevalence and infection intensity of A. alata in carnivore mammals, the host age and related occurrence of different A. alata development stages in particular animals in Latvia. Overall, samples from 992 animal

Molecular epidemiology of rabies virus isolates from South Korea.

A molecular epidemiological study was performed on 13 Korean virus isolates, which were collected from wild and domestic animals diagnosed as rabid between 1998 and 2004. Seven samples were from domestic animals such as dogs and cattle infected by rabid raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis), and the rest of the six samples were from raccoon dogs in the wild. The study was carried out based on the comparison of nucleotide and amino acid sequences of nucleoprotein (N) and glycoprotein (G) coding regions and nucleotide sequence of the G-L intergenic (Psi) non-coding region of the isol

First report of Trichinella nativa in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes schrencki) from Otaru City, Hokkaido, Japan.

Forty-three red foxes (Vulpes vulpes schrencki) and nine raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) were captured in Otaru City, Hokkaido, Japan and examined by muscle digestion for the presence of Trichinella sp. larvae. Of the foxes, five (11.6%) were positive for larvae of Trichinella nativa while none of the raccoon dogs were found to be positive. This finding suggests that the red foxes are important reservoir hosts of sylvatic trichinellosis in Otaru, Hokkaido. This is the first report on Trichinella nativa in wild red foxes of Hokkaido, Japan.

Rabies and rabies virus in wildlife in mainland China, 1990-2013.

The number of wildlife rabies and wildlife-associated human and livestock rabies cases has increased in recent years, particularly in the southeast and northeast regions of mainland China. To better understand wildlife rabies and its role in human and livestock rabies, we reviewed what is known about wildlife rabies from the 1990s to 2013 in mainland China. In addition, the genetic diversity and phylogeny of available wildlife-originated rabies viruses (RABVs) were analyzed. Several wildlife species carry rabies including the bat, Chinese ferret badger, raccoon dog, rat, fox, and wolf. RABVs h

Giardia duodenalis genotypes in domestic and wild animals from Romania identified by PCR-RFLP targeting the gdh gene.

Sixty Giardia duodenalis isolates from domestic (n=49) and wild (n=11) animals (dogs, cats, deers, wolves, raccoon dog and muskrat) were analysed by PCR-RFLP at glutamate dehydrogenase locus (gdh). The isolates were obtained from positive feces samples for Giardia cysts analysed by flotation technique with saturated sodium chloride solution (specific gravity 1.28). Three G. duodenalis genotypes were identified: C (10/60; 16.7%); D (42/60; 70.0%); and E (7/60; 11.7%). In dogs all three genotypes were found, with the following prevalences: 76.9% genotype D (30/39); 23.1% C (9/39); 2.6% genotype

Molecular characterization of Korean rabies virus isolates.

The nucleoprotein (N) and glycoprotein (G) of 11 Korean rabies virus (RABV) isolates collected from animals diagnosed with rabies between 2008 and 2009 were subjected to molecular and phylogenetic analyses. Six isolates originated from domestic animals (cattle and dogs) and five were obtained from wild free-ranging raccoon dogs. The similarities in the nucleotide sequences of the N gene among all Korean isolates ranged from 98.1 to 99.8%, while those of the G gene ranged from 97.9 to 99.3%. Based on the nucleotide analysis of the N and G genes, the Korean RABV isolates were confirmed as genoty

The distribution of vitamin A and retinol-binding protein in the blood plasma, urine, liver and kidneys of carnivores.

The contents of retinol and retinyl esters as well as retinol-binding protein (RBP) in the plasma, urine, liver and kidneys of dogs, raccoon dogs and silver foxes were investigated. In the plasma and urine of all three species, vitamin A was present as retinol and retinyl esters. Vitamin A levels (1376+/-669 microg x g(-1)) were significantly higher in the livers of dogs than in the kidneys (200+/-217 microg x g(-1), P < 0.001 ). However, vitamin A levels in the kidneys of raccoon dogs (291+/-146 microg x g(-1)) and silver foxes (474+/-200 microg x g(-1)) were significantly higher than in the

Rabies surveillance in the United States during 2008.

During 2008, 49 states and Puerto Rico reported 6,841 cases of rabies in animals and 2 cases in humans to the CDC, representing a 3.1% decrease from the 7,060 cases in animals and 1 case in a human reported in 2007. Approximately 93% of the cases were in wildlife, and 7% were in domestic animals. Relative contributions by the major animal groups were as follows: 2,389 (34.9%) raccoons, 1,806 (26.4%) bats, 1,589 (23.2%) skunks, 454 (6.6%) foxes, 294 (4.3%) cats, 75 (1.1%) dogs, and 59 (0.9%) cattle. Behavior, movements, and demographics of rabid raccoons in Ontario, Canada: management implications.

During 1999-2003, 127 cases of raccoon variant rabies were reported in raccoons (Procyon lotor) and striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) in Ontario, Canada. Raccoons accounted for 98% (125/127) of the reported cases with behaviors/conditions including aggression, fighting with dogs, ataxia, vocalizations, appearance of being sick, and the presence of porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) quills. Seventy-eight percent of the rabid raccoons were adults. Juveniles were underrepresented (22%) compared with the adult/juvenile ratios found in nonrabid Ontario raccoon populations. Of the known aged raccoons,

Ecological nuance and comparative parasitology of sympatric canids in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.

Anthropogenic environmental contamination, including ionizing radiation, can reshape host-parasite dynamics through direct and indirect ecological pathways, yet parasite communities in radioactively contaminated landscapes remain poorly characterized. Wildlife from the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) are chronically exposed to elevated ionizing radiation across a heterogeneous contamination gradient and human-abandoned landscape, offering a rare opportunity to examine host-parasite-environment interactions under long-term radiation exposure. We characterized pathogen and parasite communities in

Tick-borne bacterial pathogens in wildlife and their parasitizing ticks in Korea: A molecular epidemiological study.

Ticks are important vectors of numerous zoonotic pathogens, yet integrated molecular surveillance of wildlife hosts and their parasitizing ticks remains limited in Korea. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of major tick-borne bacterial pathogens in wildlife and their associated ticks. Blood samples were collected from Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis), raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides), and wild boars (Sus scrofa), and a total of 246 ticks were obtained from these 34 animals. Molecular analyses identified multiple bacterial pathogens, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum,

Farmed fur animals harbour viruses with zoonotic spillover potential.

Animals such as raccoon dogs, mink and muskrats are farmed for fur and are sometimes used as food or medicinal products1,2, yet they are also potential reservoirs of emerging pathogens3. Here we performed single-sample metatranscriptomic sequencing of internal tissues from 461 individual fur animals that were found dead due to disease. We characterized 125 virus species, including 36 that were novel and 39 at potentially high risk of cross-species transmission, including zoonotic spillover. Notably, we identified seven species of coronaviruses, expanding their known host range, and documented

Epidemiology of trichinellosis in lynx in Finland.

Three hundred and twenty seven European lynx (Lynx lynx) were examined for Trichinella sp. larvae using the muscle digestion method. The animals were of both sexes, various ages, and collected between 1989 and 1994 in different locations in Finland. Forty percent of them (132) were found to be infected. Infection was overdispersed, so that the majority of infected lynx only harboured small amounts of larvae, while a minority had higher densities of infection, but never significantly exceeding 40 larvae per gram of muscle (lpg). The median density of infection was 1.04 lpg. To find factor stati

Characterization of antimicrobial resistance genes in Enterobacteriaceae carried by suburban mesocarnivores and locally owned and stray dogs.

The role of wildlife in the dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment is of increasing concern. We investigated the occurrence, richness and transmissibility potential of ARGs detected in the faeces of three mesocarnivore species: the coyote (Canis latrans), raccoon (Procyon lotor) and Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), and of stray and owned dogs in suburban Chicago, IL, USA. Rectal swabs were collected from live-captured coyotes (n = 32), raccoons (n = 31) and Virginia opossums (n = 22). Fresh faecal samples were coll

Copy number variation of the SRY gene showed an association with disorders of sex development in Yorkshire Terrier dogs.

The molecular background of disorders of sex development (DSD) in dogs is poorly understood. Several copies of the SRY genes have been reported in the dog genome. We used droplet digital PCR with the aim of determining variability in SRY copy number and its association with DSD in dogs. Altogether 19 DSD male dogs (XY DSD) of 10 breeds and 87 control dogs of eight breeds were analyzed. Moreover, we performed a comparative analysis of SRY copy number in other canids: wolves (3), red foxes (16), and Chinese raccoon dogs (10). We found that the modal number of SRY copies in dogs, wolves, red foxe

First oral vaccination of wildlife against rabies in Estonia.

Estonia is a small country, with many islands, that covers a total area of 45,000 km2 in the Baltic region. Rabies is widely distributed all over the country, even on some islands. The disease is maintained by two species: red foxes and raccoon dogs. In 2003, 813 cases of rabies were recorded with 315 cases in foxes and 362 cases in raccoon dogs; since 2002 the latter species has had the highest level of rabies infection among all animal species in Estonia. The measure used to control rabies is vaccination of dogs and cats, as they are the source on infection of humans. In Spring 2004, a limit

PATHOLOGY AND DISCRETE TYPING UNIT ASSOCIATIONS OF TRYPANOSOMA CRUZI INFECTION IN COYOTES (CANIS LATRANS) AND RACCOONS (PROCYON LOTOR) OF TEXAS, USA.

Trypanosoma cruzi is a vector-borne, protozoal parasite of mammals. Infected humans, dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), and nonhuman primates may remain asymptomatic or may develop Chagas disease, most commonly characterized by lymphoplasmacytic myocarditis with myocardial degeneration and fibrosis, ultimately resulting in heart failure. Although wildlife species have important roles as sylvatic reservoirs, investigations into the pathology of T. cruzi in wildlife are limited to a few studies documenting histologic lesions in opossums (Didelphis spp.) and raccoons (Procyon lotor).
