A comprehensive descriptive analysis of hip and knee radiographic osteoarthritis in the UK Biobank in relation to joint pain, joint site interrelationships, obesity, race and deprivation: Findings from 59,475 individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with osteoarthritis (OA) affecting multiple joints experience greater pain than those with single-joint disease, yet most research examines isolated joints, leaving a gap in multi-joint disease. This study aimed to describe radiographic hip (rHOA) and knee OA (rKOA) within UK Biobank (UKB), exploring interrelationships across joints and associations with joint pain, body size, race and deprivation. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study applied machine learning to hip and knee dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans. Radiographic OA (rOA) was defined as custom grades ≥2. Joint

Patient and System-Related Delays of Emergency Medical Services Use in Acute ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction: Results from the Third Gulf Registry of Acute Coronary Events (Gulf RACE-3Ps).

BACKGROUND: Little is known about Emergency Medical Services (EMS) use and pre-hospital triage of patients with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in Arabian Gulf countries. METHODS: Clinical arrival and acute care within 24 h of STEMI symptom onset were compared between patients transferred by EMS (Red Crescent and Inter-Hospital) and those transferred by non-EMS means. Data were retrieved from a prospective registry of 36 hospitals in 6 Arabian Gulf countries, from January 2014 to January 2015. RESULTS: We enrolled 2,928 patients; mean age, 52.7 (SD ±11.8) years; 90% men; and

Where Do We Come From…Where are We Heading? Reflections on the Personal, the Systemic, and the Political.

Using my personal story, I reflect on the history of the field of child development from the 1970's to the present. I recount how far have we come…but also, how far we still have to go on creating a literature where contextual forces, such as racism and other sources of oppression are considered at the core rather than the perifery of research with minoritized BILPOC (Black, Indigenous, Latinx, People of Color) families and children. As scholars of color, we not only have had to conduct/fund/publish research and teach, but also push our institutions and organizations to create the systemic and

The dyadic link between color-evasiveness and racial socialization among Black-White interracial parents.

OBJECTIVE: Black-White interracial parents may face unique challenges when it comes to racially socializing their children. This study accounts for particular interdependent dynamics involved in racial socialization for Black-White interracial parents by examining the dyadic relationships between color-evasiveness and different forms of racial socialization (racial bias preparation [RBP], promotion of racial mistrust, and egalitarianism) while also investigating the moderating roles of parent race and gender. METHOD: A sample of 114 Black-White interracial couples (N = 228, Mage = 33.29) recr

Racial Differences in Retention in a Community-based Addiction Reduction Program Implemented by Peer Recovery Coaches for Women of Reproductive Age.

To identify program characteristics that influence the retention of women of reproductive age in the Community-based Addiction Reduction program (CARE), mixed-method analyses of CARE survey data and CARE Peer Recovery Coach (PRC) narrative entries of participant encounters were performed. About 251 women were enrolled in this prospective community-based implementation science intervention. We compared survey responses by race for treatment status, treatment motivation scales, and retention in the program at intake, 2-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month follow ups using Chi-square/T-tests. Qualitative analy

Academic and social motives and drinking behavior.

This longitudinal study of 1,447 first-time college students tested separate time-varying covariate models of the relations between academic and social motives/behaviors and alcohol use and related problems from senior year of high school through the end of the second year in college. Structural equation models identified small but significant inverse relations between academic motives/behaviors and alcohol use across all time points, with relations of somewhat larger magnitude between academic motives/behaviors and alcohol-related problems across all semesters other than senior year in high s

A family resilience agenda for understanding and responding to parental incarceration.

The majority of research on children with incarcerated parents has focused on documenting main effects and adjustment problems among children and families. Although the focus on problems has been crucial in mobilizing support for this population, the field is now at a critical turning point where researchers are calling for more attention to resilience. We argue here that a family resilience perspective is useful in considering child and family level processes that may mitigate the harmful impact of parental incarceration. In contributing to a family resilience agenda, we first review evidence

How Microaggressions Reinforce and Perpetuate Systemic Racism in the United States.

The consequences of racial microaggressions are most often discussed at an interpersonal level. In this article, we contend that microaggressions play an important role in maintaining systems of racial oppression beyond the interpersonal context. Specifically, we illustrate how microaggressions establish White superiority in the United States by othering people of color (e.g., treating people of color as if they are not true citizens) and communicating that they are inferior (e.g., environmental exclusions and attacks, treating people of color as second-class citizens). We also present evidenc

The meaning of race in health care and research--part 1: the impact of history.

Questions about the relevance of genetics to health disparities, and evidence that racial and ethnic health disparities are strongly associated with social factors are impacting the understanding of health care needs and research. This first of two articles (see the next issue of the journal for the second) examines the history of understanding race and its impact on assumptions and biases in healthcare. The concept of race as we know it is relatively modern. Yet, in the United States, race has strongly influenced the development of social systems and relations. The legacy of early ideas about

Unraveling the concept of race in Brazil: issues for the Rio de Janeiro Cooperative Agreement site.

Scholars throughout the Americas have spent much of the 20th century studying race and its meaning in Brazil. Racial identities in Brazil are dynamic concepts which can only be understood if situated and explored within the appropriate cultural context. Empirical evidence of the fluidity of racial identification quickly came to the authors' attention within the context of a prevention initiative targeting segments of the Rio de Janeiro population at high risk for HIV/AIDS. Because the main objective of this program was to slow the spread of AIDS through an intervention designed to promote beha

Hostility and anomie: links to preterm delivery subtypes and ambulatory blood pressure at mid-pregnancy.

Underlying maternal vascular disease has been implicated as one of several pathways contributing to preterm delivery (PTD) and psychosocial factors such as hostility, anomie, effortful coping, and mastery may be associated with PTD by affecting maternal vascular health. Using data from the Pregnancy Outcomes and Community Health (POUCH) study, we included 2018 non-Hispanic White and 743 African American women from 52 clinics in five Michigan, USA communities. Women were interviewed at 15-27 weeks' gestation and followed to delivery. We found that relations between psychosocial factors and PTD

Racial mixture, blood and nation in medical publications on sickle cell disease in 1950s Brazil.

This paper investigates continuities and changes in the definition of sickle cell disease in 1950s Brazil, taking into account that diseases have a history and are recognized as such according to the knowledge and perceptions available in a certain historical period and specific location. In the post-war era, new diagnostic tools, inheritance theories and, in particular, discussions on the concepts of race and racial relations, both nationally and internationally, were changing previous racialist and racist views. Nonetheless, the Brazilian medical interpretations of sickle cell disease contin

Social competence in children with IDDM and asthma: child, teacher, and parent reports of children's social adjustment, social performance, and social skills.

Used Cavell's (1990) model of childhood social competence to compare the social competence in peer relations of 25 children (ages 8-10 years) with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), 19 children with asthma, and 24 physically healthy children. Children were individually matched for economic status, race, gender, and age. Children, their parents, and their teachers completed measures of children's social adjustment, social performance, and social skills in peer relations. Contrary to hypotheses, no differences between the groups of children were noted on any of the measures of social co

Race, race-based discrimination, and health outcomes among African Americans.

Persistent and vexing health disadvantages accrue to African Americans despite decades of work to erase the effects of race discrimination in this country. Participating in these efforts, psychologists and other social scientists have hypothesized that African Americans' continuing experiences with racism and discrimination may lie at the root of the many well-documented race-based physical health disparities that affect this population. With newly emerging methodologies in both measurement of contextual factors and functional neuroscience, an opportunity now exists to cleave together a compre

Personality correlates of pathological gambling derived from Big Three and Big Five personality models.

Personality traits have proved to be consistent and important factors in a variety of externalizing behaviors including addiction, aggression, and antisocial behavior. Given the comorbidity of these behaviors with pathological gambling (PG), it is important to test the degree to which PG shares these trait correlates. In a large community sample of regular gamblers (N=354; 111 with diagnoses of pathological gambling), the relations between measures of two major models of personality - Big Three and Big Five - were examined in relation to PG symptoms derived from a semi-structured diagnostic in

The antecedents and consequences of racial/ethnic discrimination during adolescence: does the source of discrimination matter?

In the current study, we examined the precursors and consequences of discrimination for 876 Latino, African American, and Asian American adolescents (Mage = 16.9 years, SD = 0.43). The race/ethnic characteristics of schools and neighborhoods influenced adolescents' perceptions of the race/ethnic climates of these contexts. In turn, adolescents who viewed climates more negatively were more likely to perceive discriminatory treatment by school personnel, peers, and societal institutions. Discrimination from these 3 sources exerted differential influence on developmental outcomes: Greater discrim
