Stress, trauma, racial/ethnic group membership, and HPA function: Utility of hair cortisol.

Discrimination, poverty, and other aspects of the minority experience produce stress associated with health disparities. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a neuroendocrine subsystem usually monitored through assay of the hormone cortisol, is thought to play a key role in this relationship. Cortisol assay using hair specimens is a technology that promises to address important methodological problems in large-scale studies of health, well-being, and racial/ethnic status. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of a hair cortisol assay-based method for studying trait-l

The utility of indirect measures of obesity in racial comparisons of blood pressure. CARDIA Study Group.

The associations between estimates of obesity derived from anthropometric measurements (body mass index, the sum of three skin folds, and the computed percent body fat) and blood pressures were examined by multiple regression analysis in 4508 young black and white adults. The three estimates of obesity yielded similar results in regression analyses. The strength of associations between these three estimates of obesity and systolic and diastolic blood pressures did not differ in black and white subjects of either sex. All three estimates lead to the same interpretation of the relationship betwe

Group-Based Medical Mistrust and Healthcare Utilization Among Racially and Ethnically Minoritized Adults.

BACKGROUND: Group-based medical mistrust is a critical yet understudied factor associated with healthcare utilization among Black, African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian/AAPI, or Indigenous working adults. How mistrust relates to primary care (GP/PCP), urgent care/emergency room (ER), and hospital-based care, and whether these associations vary by health perceptions or insurance coverage, remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether higher group-based medical mistrust was associated with lower primary care use, greater urgent care/ER use, and hospitalizations, and whether health

Do racial and ethnic group differences in performance on the MCAT exam reflect test bias?

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized examination that assesses fundamental knowledge of scientific concepts, critical reasoning ability, and written communication skills. Medical school admission officers use MCAT scores, along with other measures of academic preparation and personal attributes, to select the applicants they consider the most likely to succeed in medical school. In 2008-2011, the committee charged with conducting a comprehensive review of the MCAT exam examined four issues: (1) whether racial and ethnic groups differ in mean MCAT scores, (2) whether any

Assessment of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Event Across Diverse Racial Groups of Psoriasis Patients on Biologic Therapy: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and biologic therapy may reduce this risk by targeting systemic inflammation. However, limited data exist on whether long term MACE risk differs by biologic class or across racial groups. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess the risk of primary MACE in psoriasis patients receiving biological therapies, stratified by biological class, compared with biologic-naïve psoriasis patients. Whether MACE risk among biologic-treated patients varied by race was further examined. After 1:1 propensit

The Impact of Social Media Self-Presentation and Anxiety on Ruminative Exploration Among Women Across Diverse Racial and Ethnic Groups.

Background: Ruminative exploration is a maladaptive form of identity development and is related to higher rates of anxiety and depression. Few researchers have examined how the four dimensions of social media self-presentation (breadth, depth, positivity, authenticity) impact ruminative exploration; much of the literature focuses on identity coherence or identity clarity. Furthermore, the social diversification hypothesis supports that social media is used differently across racial/ethnic groups. The current study aimed to understand how social media self-presentation predicted ruminative expl

Challenges in Skin Cancer Screening and Access to Treatment Among Multiple U.S. Racial and Ethnic Population Groups: A Systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer remains the most common malignancy in the United States, yet disparities in screening, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes persist among racial, ethnic, and underserved populations. Minority groups are more likely to present with advanced-stage disease and experience worse survival outcomes compared with non-Hispanic White populations. This systematic review synthesized contemporary U.S.-based evidence examining barriers to skin cancer prevention, detection, and treatment among underserved populations. METHODS: Guided by the Arksey and O'Malley framework and reported in

Efficacy of Ofatumumab and Teriflunomide in Patients With Relapsing MS From Racial/Ethnic Minority Groups: ASCLEPIOS I/II Subgroup Analyses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Race and ethnicity may influence the efficacy of disease-modifying therapies in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Incidence of MS in ethnically diverse groups may be higher; however, these populations are under-represented in MS trials. This post hoc analysis compared the proportion of patients achieving 3-parameter no evidence of disease activity (NEDA-3) with ofatumumab vs teriflunomide in participants with relapsing MS (RMS) enrolled in the ASCLEPIOS I/II trials by race/ethnicity subgroup. Common Versus Specific Correlates of Fifth-Grade Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder Symptoms: Comparison of Three Racial/Ethnic Groups.

The extent to which risk profiles or correlates of conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms overlap among youth continues to be debated. Cross-sectional data from a large, representative community sample (N = 4,705) of African-American, Latino, and White fifth graders were used to examine overlap in correlates of CD and ODD symptoms. About 49 % of the children were boys. Association of birthplace and self-reported hypertension by racial/ethnic groups among US adults--National Health Interview Survey, 2006-2010.

BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, the proportion of US adults who were foreign-born has been increasing, as has the overall prevalence of hypertension. Here, we compared the prevalence of self-reported hypertension among native-born adults with that among foreign-born adults, classified by racial/ethnic group. METHODS: Using 2006-2010 data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), we compared the age-adjusted prevalence of hypertension among native-born adults to foreign-born adults, specified by continent of birthplace and race/ethnicity. Results are expressed as unadjusted odds

One size does not fit all: an examination of low birthweight disparities among a diverse set of racial/ethnic groups.

To examine disparities in low birthweight using a diverse set of racial/ethnic categories and a nationally representative sample. This research explored the degree to which sociodemographic characteristics, health care access, maternal health status, and health behaviors influence birthweight disparities among seven racial/ethnic groups. Binary logistic regression models were estimated using a nationally representative sample of singleton, normal for gestational age births from 2001 using the ECLS-B, which has an approximate sample size of 7,800 infants. The multiple variable models examine di

Testing measurement invariance of self-report and interview measures of borderline personality disorder across ethnic/racial groups of inpatient adolescents.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder that onsets during adolescence. Research examining sociocontextual differences in BPD presentation is limited and provides mixed results, highlighting the importance of further investigation and the evaluation of potential measure effects. This study assessed measurement invariance of two widely used adolescent measures (self-report-the Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children and semistructured interview-Childhood Interview of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Borderline Personality Disorder) of BPD. Comparisons acros

"My Body is Betraying Me": Exploring the Stigma and Coping Strategies for Infertility Among Women Across Ethnic and Racial Groups.

Female infertility remains a taboo and carries stigma across various ethnic/racial communities. Infertility-related stigma impairs women's mental well-being, strains their family relationships, and deters them from seeking treatment. In this article, we seek to understand the perceived/self-stigma of infertility and stigma management through in-depth interviews with 29 women (White, African American, and Hispanic) who were facing fertility challenges. Taking an intersectional approach, we focused on how these women's experience of infertility and their stigma coping were shaped by certain gend
