Extraarticular and simple intraarticular fractures and malunions of the distal radius can be addressed through a direct radial approach that entails careful and meticulous handling of the soft tissues. This approach involves mobilization of the superficial branch of the radial nerve (SBRN) and extensor tendons of the first dorsal compartment. A Type I SBRN pattern is when the nerve presents as a single bundle. In Type II pattern, there are 2 major nerve groups present. With Type II branching patterns of the SBRN, careful intraneural dissection is required to mobilize the nerve branches into a

Radial nerve entrapment at the lateral intermuscular septum in the distal upper arm can cause debilitating pain and functional impairment. The nerve passes from the dorsal to the volar compartment through the LIS, approximately 8-10 cm proximal to the lateral epicondyle, making it susceptible to compression. Clinical signs include wrist drop, localized pain, and weakness in wrist and finger extension, often seen in manual laborers and athletes. A minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided, percutaneous technique using local anesthesia and no tourniquet allows precise nerve decompression while prese

Radial nerve entrapment at the LIS is an aching pain in the distal, lateral upper arm and leads to weakness in wrist and thumb/index finger extension. Additionally, a positive scratch collapse test and localized pain on pressure at the entrapment site are observed. The described approach uses a minimally invasive percutaneous ultrasound-guided technique under local anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: This is the first systematic review of the relationship between humeral shaft fractures and radial nerve palsy in children. The present comprehensive review is aimed at identifying important clinical findings between humeral diaphysis fractures and radial nerve injuries and assessing the effects of treatment.
METHODS: We searched electronic bibliographic databases, including PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge, until March 2022. This systematic review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and the pa

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the risk of iatrogenic radial nerve injury between arm positionings of 45° and 60° abduction in anterolateral humeral plating using a 4.5-mm narrow dynamic compression plate.
METHODS: Fifty-six humeri of cadavers in the supine position with 45° of arm abduction were exposed through the anterolateral approach. A hypothetical fracture line was marked at the middle of the humerus, and a precontoured ten-hole 4.5-mm narrow dynamic compression plate was applied and fixed to the anterolateral surface. After the fixation, the radial nerv

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to present the results of early nerve explorations in cases with radial nerve palsy associated with humeral shaft fracture and to investigate in which cases early nerve explorations may be beneficial.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients (17 males, 7 females; mean age 36 years; range 18 to 72 years) with complete sensory and motor radial nerve damage associated with humeral shaft fracture were retrospectively analyzed. The patients with high-energy trauma and the ones who had spiral and segmental fractures with low energy traumas were included in the study. E

UNLABELLED: Hamartoma of soft tissue in the extremity is uncommon. We report a 36-year-old female patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). She had had a gradually increased mass in her right forearm and wrist for ten years. The mass increased suddenly after the trauma. As a result, she felt pain and progressive numbness of forearm and hand. Her radial and median nerves were compressed by the mass. We resected the tumor and released the compression of nerves. After the surgery, the patient gained neural functional recovery. Two years after surgery, she had no tumor recurrence. We discuss i

PURPOSE: To determine whether the radial nerve should be explored when there is a complete sensory and motor deficit after a high-energy fracture of the humeral diaphysis.
METHODS: Twenty-four patients aged 16 years or older with a high-energy, diaphyseal fracture of the humerus and complete motor and sensory radial nerve palsy were reviewed retrospectively. Eleven fractures were open-6 of these were part of a very complex upper-extremity injury (multiple ipsilateral fractures in 3 patients and near amputation in 3). All 11 patients with open fractures and 3 of 13 patients with closed injurie

INTRODUCTION: The radial nerve and posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) are prone to injury at multiple sites. Electrodiagnostic (EDx) studies may only identify the most proximal lesion. Nerve ultrasound could augment EDx by visualizing additional pathology.
METHODS: This investigation was a retrospective examination of ultrasound and EDx from 26 patients evaluated for posterior cord/radial/PIN lesions.
RESULTS: Eighteen of 26 patients had abnormalities on EDx (15 radial, 2 PIN, 1 posterior cord). Ultrasound identified 15 of 18 (83%) of the EDx abnormalities and provided additional diagnostic

AIM: The peripheral nerves of the upper extremity are exposed to acute and chronic mechanical injuries in ice hockey players, because of the high repetition of motions, high muscular forces and extreme shoulder positions. This study was performed to evaluate the effect of ice hockey playing on the axillary, musculocutaneous and radial nerves crossing the upper arm region.
METHODS: The ice hockey group consisted of 20 first-division male ice hockey players and the control group consisted of 20 non-active males. The neurophysiological study consisted of motor nerve conduction latency of the axi

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to clarify the range of involvement for hand-arm vibration syndrome (VS) in the median, ulnar and radial nerves of the hand.
METHODS: Sensory nerve conduction velocities (SCVs) for 3 nerves in the hands and arms were examined for 34 patients with VS and 23 age-matched controls. Neuropathy types were classified by possible carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), Guyon's syndrome and digital neuropathy in three nerves.
RESULTS: SCV in the median nerve (middle finger, wrist-elbow) and ulnar nerve (little finger, wrist-elbow), and amplitudes of the median nerve (wrist-pr

The authors report two cases of paralysis of the posterior branch of the radial nerve as a result of compression of the nerve by a benign tumour, in both instances a lipoma. Analysis of the sixteen cases appearing in the literature reveals that the symptoms and signs are constant, characterised by the progressive development of paralysis of the muscles supplied by the deep branch of the radial nerve with the appearance of a tumefaction around the lateral part of the elbow. X-rays of the elbow confirm the diagnosis in the presence of a radiotranslucent polylobulated image. Surgical excision is

BACKGROUND: It remains a surgical challenge to treat high-grade nerve injuries of the upper extremity. Extra-anatomic reconstructions through the transfer of peripheral nerves have gained clinical importance over the past decades. This contribution outlines the anatomic and histomorphometric basis for the transfer of the superficial branch of the radial nerve (SBRN) to the median nerve (MN) and the superficial branch of the ulnar nerve (SBUN).
METHODS: The SBRN, MN, and SBUN were identified in 15 specimens and the nerve transfer performed. A favorable site for coaptation was chosen and its lo

BACKGROUND: Nontraumatic pain in the shoulder, arm, and hand (brachialgia) is a common complaint in the field of musculoskeletal disorders, where nerve entrapment constitutes a possible cause. The effect of nerve compression is dose-dependent; thus, a low-level compression will only result in decreased endoneurial circulation, neural edema, and a Seddon grade IV weakness, but will not be revealed in nerve conduction or magnetic resonance imaging studies. Because of technical limitations, several clinical options to diagnose compression neuropathies in the upper extremity have been proposed. Th
