High- versus low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy of rotator cuff tendinopathy: a prospective, randomised, controlled study.

A prospective, controlled, randomised trial was performed to compare the effect of high-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) versus low-energy ESWT in treatment of rotator cuff tendinopathy. Forty adult patients were included in the study. Patients in the intervention group received 6000 impulses of high-energy (ED+ 0.78 mJ/mm2) in 3 sessions under local anaesthesia. Patients in the control group received 6000 impulses of a low-energy ESWT (ED+ 0.33 mJ/mm2) under local anaesthesia. Follow-up examinations were performed 12 weeks and one year after treatment by an independent observer

Exposures and health effects at sea: report on the NIVA course: maritime occupational medicine, exposures and health effects at Sea Elsinore, Denmark, May 2014.

The presentations and discussions summarised provide an overview on the current state of knowledge on a wide range of occupational health risks to which seafarers are exposed. The definition of an occupational risk for a seafarer poses problems as their ship provides both their working and their living environment and, because of its mobility, can expose them to diverse climatic and infectious risks. Knowledge about levels of exposure to potential health risks in seafarers is limited when compared to those working ashore while, because of a pattern of working that is often temporary and insecu

Water loss from the skin of term and preterm infants nursed under a radiant heater.

The rate of evaporation from the skin (g/m2/h) was measured in 12 full-term and 16 preterm infants (gestational age 25-34 wk) both during incubator care and when nursed under a radiant heater. The method for evaporation rate measurement is noninvasive and based on determination of the water vapor pressure gradient close to the skin surface. Measurements were first made with the infant nursed in an incubator with a controlled environment with respect to humidity, temperature, and air velocity. The measurements in the term infants were performed at an ambient relative humidity (RH) of 50%, and i

Innovations in MRI and AI Integration for Vascular Plaque Evaluation and Overview of Deep Learning Techniques in Peripheral Vascular Disease.

Recent years have brought increasing development of artificial intelligence (AI)-based approaches aimed at optimizing clinical decision-making in vascular medicine. Models increasingly facilitate diagnostic interpretation, treatment planning, and prognosis prediction, particularly in complex cases of peripheral artery disease (PAD). In parallel, a major effort to integrate deep learning methods and imaging modalities has led to new opportunities for using anatomical data to enhance diagnostic capabilities. Among these modalities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is gaining popularity as a noni

A cluster of brain tumours in a New South Wales colliery: a problem in interpretation.

Following the reporting of a cluster of cases of brain tumour in the workforce of an underground coal mine (Mine A) in the Newcastle coalfield, a study was carried out to determine whether this phenomenon was due to chance alone or whether an environmental cause could be postulated. The study design was a historical cohort study over 15 years comparing the incidence of brain tumour (ICD9 191 and 192) in the index mine with that in two control mines (Mines B and C) in the same area and with that in the general Australian population. We compared environmental exposures (ionising and nonionizing

The histological and biochemical analysis of the effects of radiofrequency radiation on testis tissue of rats and the protective effect of melatonin.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primarily due to wireless communication devices, especially mobile phones, there has been a steady rise in the intensity of nonionizing radiofrequency radiation (RFR). In recent years, increased human health problems raised concerns about whether there is a positive relationship between intense exposure to RFR and public health. The present study aims to investigate the effects of GSM-like RFR exposure on the male reproductive system and the impact of melatonin treatment (synergistic, antagonist, or additive). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six male Wistar Albino rats were used

Does the Addition of a "Black Bone" Sequence to a Fast Multisequence Trauma MR Protocol Allow MRI to Replace CT after Traumatic Brain Injury in Children?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Head CT is the current neuroimaging tool of choice in acute evaluation of pediatric head trauma. The potential cancer risks of CT-related ionizing radiation should limit its use in children. We evaluated the role of MR imaging, including a "black bone" sequence, compared with CT in detecting skull fractures and intracranial hemorrhages in children with acute head trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective evaluation of 2D head CT and brain MR imaging studies including the black bone sequence of children with head trauma. Two experienced pediatric neuro

Fetal magnetic resonance imaging in obstetric practice.

Ultrasonography (USG) is the primary imaging method for prenatal diagnosis of fetal abnormalities since its discovery. Although it is the primary method of fetal imaging, it cannot provide sufficient information about the fetus in some conditions such as maternal obesity, oligohydramnios and engagement of the fetal head. At this stage, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facilitates examination by providing more specific information. The need and importance of fetal MRI applications further increased by the intrauterine surgery which is currently gaining popularity. Some advantages of fetal MRI o

An international prospective cohort study of mobile phone users and health (Cosmos): design considerations and enrolment.

BACKGROUND: There is continuing public and scientific interest in the possibility that exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) from mobile telephones or other wireless devices and applications might increase the risk of certain cancers or other diseases. The interest is amplified by the rapid world-wide penetration of such technologies. The evidence from epidemiological studies published to date have not been consistent and, in particular, further studies are required to identify whether longer term (well beyond 10 years) RF exposure might pose some health risk. METHODS:

Comparison of Black Bone MRI and 3D-CT in the preoperative evaluation of patients with craniosynostosis.

PURPOSE: Black Bone (BB) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a nonionizing imaging method and a recent alternative to computed tomography (CT) in the examination of cranial deformities. The purpose of this study was to compare BB-MRI and routine 3D-CT in the preoperative evaluation of patients with craniosynostosis. METHODS: At our center, we have routinely performed preoperative CT of the skull and brain MRI for patients with clinical suspicion of craniosynostosis. We recently changed our MRI protocol into one that includes sequences for the evaluation of both brain anatomy and skull bone an

Measuring the impact of surgical intervention on pediatric pectus excavatum using white light scanning.

BACKGROUND: Objective preoperative assessment of pectus excavatum (PE) deformity in patients is limited to preoperative measurement of severity using computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Postoperative assessment is currently subjective as postoperative CT scans are not recommended in light of radiation exposure and high cost to families. White Light Scanning (WLS) is a novel 3D imaging modality that offers an alternative that is a quick, nonionizing, inexpensive, and safe strategy for measurement both pre- and postsurgery. Our prior investigation demonstrated the feasi

New lipophilic polyelectrolyte gels containing quaternary ammonium salt with superabsorbent capacity for organic solvents.

Water and soil pollution by organic pollutants from petrochemical plants has become one of the major environmental problems in recent years. Lipophilic polyelectrolyte gels with ionic groups dissociable in nonpolar organic solvents show an enhanced swelling ability in a corresponding media attributed to the electrostatic repulsion and osmotic pressure provided by dissociated ionic groups. Here, we synthesized new lipophilic polyelectrolyte gels based on an easily available electrolyte monomer, methacryloxyethyl dimethyloctane ammonium trifluoromethanesulfonimide (MODAT), and a lipophilic neutr

Detection of Intravascular Injection During Cervical Transforaminal Epidural Injection: A Comparison of Digital Subtraction Angiography and Real Time Fluoroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Transforaminal epidural injection (TFEI) with local anesthetics and steroids are effective in treating spinal radicular pain. However, inadvertent intravascular injection can lead to severe neurologic complications. To reduce complications of intravascular injection, use of imaging modality, such as real-time fluoroscopy (RTF) or digital subtraction angiography (DSA), has been recommended. DSA is an imaging technique that can clearly visualize the blood vessels from surrounding bones or dense soft tissues by subtracting the pre-contrast image from the image after injecting contrast

The toxic effects of mobile phone radiofrequency (940 MHz) on the structure of calf thymus DNA.

Currently, the biological effects of nonionizing electromagnetic fields (EMFs) including radiofrequency (RF) radiation have been the subject of numerous experimental and theoretical studies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the possible biological effects of mobile phone RF (940 MHz, 15 V/m and SAR=40 mW/kg) on the structure of calf thymus DNA (ct DNA) immediately after exposure and 2 h after 45 min exposure via diverse range of spectroscopic instruments. The UV-vis and circular dichroism (CD) experiments depict that mobile phone EMFs can remarkably cause disturbance on ct DNA structure. I
