H-Index and Promotion in Academic Radiation Oncology.

OBJECTIVES: Academic promotion in radiation oncology is influenced by multiple factors, including scholarly productivity and demographic characteristics. While citation-based metrics such as the h-index are increasingly used as objective measures of academic output, the impact of demographic factors such as sex and underrepresented minority (URM) status remains inadequately defined. This study represents the first evaluation of the predictive value of h-index, sex, and URM status on academic promotion. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 554 radiation oncologists from 51 NCI-designated Compreh

Large language models for pretreatment education in pediatric radiation oncology: A comparative evaluation study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pediatric radiotherapy patients and their parents are usually aware of their need for radiotherapy early on, but they meet with a radiation oncologist later in their treatment. Consequently, they search for information online, often encountering unreliable sources. Large language models (LLMs) have the potential to serve as an educational pretreatment tool, providing reliable answers to their questions. We aimed to evaluate the responses provided by generative pre-trained transformers (GPT), the most popular subgroup of LLMs, to questions about pediatric radiation oncol

Oncology Organization and Oncologist Networks Under Medicare Advantage Plans.

IMPORTANCE: More than half of Medicare beneficiaries are now enrolled in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans. These plans offer lower premiums and additional benefits compared with Traditional Medicare (TM) but commonly restrict organization and clinician networks, potentially limiting access to specialists, including oncologists. Little is known about the use of oncology networks in MA plans. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effective oncology network breadth under MA plans based on realized health care utilization. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used linked 2016-2019 Surveil

[Radiotherapy and spinal toxicity: News and perspectives].

Radiation-induced myelopathy is a devastating late effect of radiotherapy. Fortunately, this late effect is exceptional. The clinical presentation of radiation myelopathy is aspecific, typically occurring between 6 to 24 months after radiotherapy, and radiation-induced myelopathy remains a diagnosis of exclusion. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most commonly used imaging tool. Radiation oncologists must be extremely cautious to the spinal cord dose, particularly in stereotactic radiotherapy and reirradiation. Conventionally, a maximum dose of 50Gy is tolerated in normofractionated radiothera

Mantle planning: report of the Australasian Radiation Oncology Lymphoma Group film survey and consensus guidelines.

The purpose of the present paper was to measure the variation in mantle planning in Australia and New Zealand. A chest X-ray (CXR) of a patient in the supine position with a neck node marked by wire was sent to every radiation oncologist in Australia and New Zealand. They were to mark on the CXR the lung blocks that they would use to treat this patient, assuming that the patient had stage IA Hodgkin's disease. These marks were compared with a small sample of radiologists who were asked to define the mediastinum on the same CXR. Radiation oncologists were also asked to complete a short question

Radiation Therapy Use in Refractory and Relapsed Adolescent and Young Adult Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Report from the Children's Oncology Group.

PURPOSE:: Clear indications do not exist for consolidative radiotherapy (CRT) in relapsed and refractory pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma (rrpHL). Increasing numbers of rrpHL patients are radiation naïve, as response-adapted front-line therapies omit CRT for favorable responses. We evaluated practice patterns among treating oncologists for rrpHL. METHODS AND MATERIALS:: A survey developed by pediatric and radiation oncologists was distributed to Children’s Oncology Group (COG) Hodgkin Lymphoma Committee members during the Fall 2021 COG meeting. Questions ascertained respondent specialty and annual

Management of radiation dermatitis in patients receiving cetuximab and radiotherapy for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck: proposals for a revised grading system and consensus management guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Radiation dermatitis developing in patients receiving cetuximab concomitantly with radiotherapy for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (LA SCCHN) is now recognized to have different pathophysiological and clinical characteristics to the radiation dermatitis associated with radiotherapy or concomitant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Current grading tools were not designed to grade this type of radiation dermatitis; their use may lead to misclassification of reactions and inappropriate management strategies, potentially compromising cancer treatment. A Radiation Therapy Contouring Atlas for Delineation of the Level I and II Axillae in the Prone Position: A Single-Institution Experience.

PURPOSE: With transition from supine to prone position, tenting of the pectoralis major occurs, displacing the muscle from the chest wall and shifting the level I and II axillary spaces. For patients for whom we aim to treat the level I and II axillae using the prone technique, accurate delineation of these nodal regions is necessary. Although different consensus guidelines exist for delineation of nodal anatomy in supine position, to our knowledge, there are no contouring guidelines in the prone position that account for this change in nodal anatomy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The level I and II

Multidisciplinary Practice Patterns and Barriers to Preoperative Radiotherapy for Soft Tissue Sarcoma: A National Multicenter Survey.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative radiotherapy (pre-opRT) is an established component of multimodal treatment for soft tissue sarcoma (STS), offering advantages in margin control and long-term functional outcomes. Its integration into clinical practice depends on effective multidisciplinary decision-making between surgical and radiation oncology teams. We conducted a national multicenter survey to evaluate practice patterns, multidisciplinary coordination, and barriers to pre-opRT implementation in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted across 25 provinces, including 123 clinicians (67

Neoplastic pericardial effusion.

Neoplastic pericardial effusion is a serious and common clinical disorder encountered by cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, oncologists, and radiation oncologists. It may develop from direct extension or metastatic spread of the underlying malignancy, from an opportunistic infection, or from a complication of radiation therapy or chemotherapeutic toxicity. The clinical presentation varies, and the patient may be hemodynamically unstable in the setting of constrictive pericarditis and cardiac tamponade. The management depends on the patient's prognosis and varies from pericardiocentesis, s

Modern evidence and future prospects of external body radiation therapy for lung oligometastases of breast cancer.

After Hellman and Weichselbaum defined "Oligometastasis" in 1995, several local therapies for lung oligometastases including surgical resection and external body radiation therapy were reported that improved local control (LC) and progression-free survival, overall survival, and quality of life. This suggests that oligometastases is a potentially curable state. Modern advances in radiation therapy such as stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in which high dose coverage of target lesion without exposure of normal organ is possible, and are widely used to treat solitary or a limited number

Upfront management of brain metastases in oncogene‑addicted NSCLC - An EORTC survey.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases (BM) are common in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring actionable genomic alterations (AGA). The availability of next-generation targeted therapies (TT) with improved central nervous system activity has expanded systemic treatment options. However, the optimal upfront management of untreated symptomatic and asymptomatic BM remains uncertain due to limited trial data. METHODS: A web-based survey was conducted by the EORTC Lung Cancer Group and distributed to EORTC and ESTRO members in June 2023-July 2024. The survey evaluated diagnostic appro

A case study of radiotherapy treatment for Dupuytren's contracture and Ledderhose disease.

Dupuytren's contracture (DC) and Ledderhose disease (LD) are benign conditions of the fascia in the hands and feet respectively, which result in contracture of the digits. Radiation therapy has been proven effective in treating early-stage DC and LD; however, the problem is that there is a paucity of literature regarding radiation therapy treatment set-up for Dupuytren's and Ledderhose patients. The purpose of this case study was to demonstrate treatment set-up considerations of 6 and 9 MeV for DC and LD cases in radiotherapy (RT). Two patients were selected from the same cancer center, each d
