Radiation safety role in institutional disaster planning.

United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) materials license applicants (non-nuclear power) must submit spill procedures with their application. While our counterparts in the nuclear power industry historically have concerned themselves with disaster drills and evacuation plans as a result of fire, explosion, or an act of terrorism, other licensees are looking only at minor spills of unsealed radioactive material and only at tile radiation hazard. Beyond NRC regulations, various oversight and accrediting organizations require, or at a minimum encourage, a written disaster plan outlining

Fitness loss and germline mutations in barn swallows breeding in Chernobyl.

The severe nuclear accident at Chernobyl in 1986 resulted in the worst reported accidental exposure of radioactive material to free-living organisms. Short-term effects on human populations inhabiting polluted areas include increased incidence of thyroid cancer, infant leukaemia, and congenital malformations in newborns. Two recent studies have reported, although with some controversy, that germline mutation rates were increased in humans and voles living close to Chernobyl, but little is known about the viability of the organisms affected. Here we report an increased frequency of partial albi

Developing emergency exercises for hazardous material transportation: process, documents and templates.

Multi-agency emergency exercises establish and reinforce relationships, and bring people from different areas together to work as a team, realise clear goals, understand roles and responsibilities, and get to know and respect each agency's strengths and weaknesses. However, despite the long-held belief in and respect for exercises in their provision of benefits to the individual and the organisation, there is little evidence of a consistent and clear process for exercise design, especially identifying the documents that may need to be completed to ensure efficient exercise preparation and perf

[Influence of radioactive contamination and iodine prophylaxis after the Czernobyl disaster on thyroid morphology and function of the Poznan region].

The radioactive contamination of Poznań Region was recognized after Chernobyl accident as average. The predicted values of minimal (inhalation) and maximal (inhalation and ingestion) committed dose equivalent to the thyroid varied from 2.5 (min) to 24.7 (max) mSv in different groups of adults and children. To follow up the results of iodine prophylaxis and some aspects of possible thyroid gland morphological and functional changes 11086 persons were carefully investigated clinically and biochemically. Among these 11086 persons were 42.6% males and 57.4% females both adults from 17 till 40 year

Microsatellite mutations in the offspring of irradiated parents 19 years after the Cesium-137 accident.

In September of 1987, a radiotherapy unit containing 50.9 TBq of Cs(137)Cl was removed from an abandoned radiotherapy clinic. This unit was subsequently disassembled leading to the most serious radiological accident yet to occur in the Western hemisphere. This event provides an opportunity to assess the genetic effects of ionizing radiation. We surveyed genetic variation of 12 microsatellite loci in 10 families of exposed individuals and their offspring and also in non-exposed families from the same area of Goias state. We found an increase in the number of new alleles in the offspring of the

[Adaptation of thyroid function to excess iodine].

NORMALLY: The production of thyroid hormones is normally stable, despite iodine supplies that may vary widely and even on sudden excess iodine. The metabolism of iodine is characterised by adapted thyroid uptake, the requirements varying on the age and physiological status of the individual (pregnancy, breastfeeding) and by insufficient supplies in several areas in France. IN THE CASE OF EXCESS: The mechanisms that permit the thyroid to adapt to a sudden or chronic excess of iodine are immature in the newborn and sometimes deficient in adults, and may lead to iodine-induced dysthyroidism. Contamination control by a greenhouse for emergency medical treatment of the contaminated patient.

In emergency medical treatment of patients contaminated with radioactivity, air contamination control is very important to prevent the secondary contamination of medical staff. In order to optimize design of a greenhouse, a numerical analysis was made by using the Flow Designer software. As a scenario of air contamination, the breathing air of the patient was assumed to be highly contaminated with radioactive gaseous or particulate matter. It was found that air contamination strongly depended on the characteristics of the contaminants. The contamination map of the coarse aerosols with low diff

An approach to detecting delayed effects of radioactive contamination on industrial-urban-area dwellers.

Detecting changes in humans that result from radioactive contamination of the area of residence many years after an incident (i.e., when the radiation has substantially decayed) presents a difficult epidemiological problem. Problems of this kind are even more complicated ina areas where the population is continually exposed to other harmful man-made factors. The city of Kamensk-Uralsky (Sverdlovsk region, Russia) is a good case in point. In 1957, part of Kamensk-Uralsky was contaminated as the result of an accident at the Kyshtym nuclear plant. In addition, the population of the contaminated a

Pilot Evaluation of a Modular Simulation Training Program Incorporating Radiation Source-Free Modules for Nuclear Disaster Preparedness Among Public Health Officials in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: Public health officials hold critical roles in nuclear emergencies, but repeated, scenario-based training is often hindered by regulatory and safety constraints surrounding the use of radioactive sources. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and preliminary educational outcomes of a modular training program incorporating radiation source-free simulation modules for public health officials. METHODS: We developed a half-day program integrating augmented reality (AR) for simulated contamination searches and a radiation source-free measurement system (USOTOPE). Twenty local gover

Lessons from the accident with 137Cesium in Goiania, Brazil: Contributions to biological dosimetry in case of human exposure to ionizing radiation.

Human exposure to ionizing radiation has increased over time, mainly due to medical applications, occupational and environmental exposure, as well as accidents involving radioactive materials. In September 1987, an accident with 137Cesium occurred in Goiânia city, Brazil; the accident started with the removal of a 50.9-TBq 137Cesium source from an abandoned radiotherapy unit. Among the radiation-exposed victims, at least 50 individuals showed symptoms of whole-body and local acute irradiation, and also external or internal contamination. In this report, the purpose was to review and summarize

Using Clinical Signs and Symptoms for Medical Management of Radiation Casualties - 2015 NATO Exercise.

The utility of early-phase (≤5 days) radiation-induced clinical signs and symptoms (e.g., vomiting, diarrhea, erythema and changes in blood cell counts) was examined for the prediction of later occurring acute radiation syndrome (ARS) severity and the development of medical management strategies. Medical treatment protocols for radiation accident victims (METREPOL) was used to grade ARS severities, which were assigned response categories (RCs). Data on individuals (n = 191) with mild (RC1, n = 45), moderate (RC2, n = 19), severe (RC3, n = 20) and fatal (RC4, n = 18) ARS, as well as nonexposed

Nasopharyngeal radium irradiation: The lessons of history.

In the Netherlands, nasopharyngeal radium irradiation was started in 1945. The indications included refractory symptoms of otitis media with effusion and other adenoid-related disorders after adenoidectomy. It was considered a safe and effective therapy. Its use decreased sharply in 1958, following a worldwide media avalanche around the dramatic events in the treatment of a 5-year-old child in Utrecht, enhancing the widespread fear of radioactivity. This case history illustrates the powerful role of the media in medical decision-making.

Case report: Iridium 192-health effects during 20 years after irradiation.

This Case Report has presented health effects of high level of irradiation with gamma rays from Ir 192m on the patient M. L. during 21 years after the accident. The main purpose of this investigation was to analyze long time consequences of partial high-level irradiation on human health. Locally, short-term irradiation, with high deadly dose, caused acute radiation syndrome with reversible disorder function of the individual, most exposed, organs. Frequency of chromosomal aberrations (dicentric), characteristic for direct irradiation, was increased. However, dicentric analyzes did not give exp

Tailed nuclei and dicentric chromosomes in irradiated subjects.

A study of peripheral blood smears from irradiated Chernobyl liquidators and other subjects has shown nuclei of some lymphocytes to have a protrusion into the cytoplasm. Such abnormal nuclei are called "tailed" nuclei (TN). Sixteen main morphologic types, observed in human peripheral blood lymphocytes, are described. The frequency of appearance of lymphocytes with TN in a group of Chernobyl liquidators was significantly higher than in control groups (p < 0.001, in all cases). A positive correlation was found between the TN frequency in lymphocytes and dicentric chromosomes in lymphocytes cultu

Collective biodosimetry as a dosimetric "gold standard": a study of three radiation accidents.

Quantification of the biologically relevant dose is required for the establishment of cause-and-effect between radiation detriment or burden and important biological outcomes. Most epidemiological studies of unanticipated radiation exposure fail to establish cause and effect because of an inability to construct a valid quantification of dose for the exposed population. No one biodosimetric technique (biophysical or biological) meets all the requirements of an ideal dosimeter and thus qualify as a "gold standard." This report combines new results with previously published data in order to estab

[Exposure to ionizing radiation: radiobiological effects and pathogenesis. 1].

The present paper describes the radiobiological effects induced by an exposure to ionizing radiation and their pathogenesis. The different skin reactions are described in detail because of their importance and frequency. Thus the acute skin lesions after high doses and the late effects resulting, either from high doses, or from accumulation of chronic irradiation, are studied. The main early syndromes are then characterized: neurological, gastro-intestinal, bone-marrow and prodromic. As far as the complex problem of radiocarcinogenesis is concerned, the main results derived from studies by int
