The continuing challenge of drug resistance and the limited efficacy of anticancer conventional therapies underlines the urgent need to develop new medicinal strategies. Metal-based compounds have appeared as promising candidates in medicine, especially in oncology, including lanthanides offering exceptional physicochemical properties such as luminescence, paramagnetism, and radiotherapeutic potential. Despite their growing obvious role in diagnostics and imaging, the biological applications of lanthanide compounds remain underexplored, although a few are used in the clinic including radiophar

PURPOSE: Identifying gastroduodenal uptake of (99m)Tc-macroaggregated albumin (MAA), which is associated with an increased risk of ulcer disease, is a crucial part of the therapeutic management of patients undergoing radioembolization for liver tumours. Given this context, the use of MAA single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT may be essential, but the procedure has still not been thoroughly evaluated. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the effectiveness of MAA SPECT/CT in identifying digestive extrahepatic uptake, while determining potential diagnostic pitfalls

INTRODUCTION: Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) using holmium-166 (¹⁶⁶Ho) microspheres is a treatment for unresectable primary and secondary liver malignancies. The pre-therapeutic simulation procedure using a scout dose is critical to predict microsphere distribution and exclude extrahepatic leakage. This single-center observational study aimed to evaluate the dosimetric agreement between ¹⁶⁶Ho-scout and ¹⁶⁶Ho-therapy, and to correlate tumor-absorbed dose with treatment response at both tumor and patient levels.
METHODS: Prospective, observational study included patients with BCLC 2022

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) debut in 75% of cases with liver metastases (LMNETs), whose therapeutic approach includes surgical resection and liver transplantation, while liver radioembolization with 90 Y-microspheres (TARE) is reserved for non-operable patients usually due to high tumor burden. We present the accumulated experience of 10 years in TARE treatment of LMNETs in order to describe the safety and the effectiveness of the oncological response in terms of survival, as well as to detect the prognostic factors involved.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Of 136 TARE proc

PURPOSE: An angiographic evaluation combined with (99m)Tc-macroaggregated albumin (Tc-MAA) scanning should precede the treatment of any selected candidates for radioembolization (RE) of the liver. If the tumours in one liver lobe have not been targeted in the test angiogram, it should be repeated. However, in a few cases treatment of one liver lobe or at least some segments is safe and feasible and performing a repeated test angiogram with Tc-MAA (Re-MAA) in a separate session leads to more radiation exposure and could be time consuming. Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility of concurrent RE

Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) is a primary palliative treatment for advanced liver cancer. Nonetheless, its therapeutic efficacy is frequently hindered by resistance to tumor cell apoptosis induced by inter-radiotherapy. Induction of multiple cell death modalities provides a potential solution to this challenge. Ferroptosis, a distinct form of cell death from apoptosis, is dependent on the intracellular Fe2+-mediated Fenton reaction for the production of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and is gaining recognition as a promising approach for cancer treatment. In this study, we synthesized a the

The global incidence of primary liver cancer has been increased during recent decades. Among the primary liver malignancies, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is recognized as the most prevalent and aggressive. Although HCC has come to be regarded as a radioresponsive tumor during the last decade, it has also been noted that the ability to deliver destructive radioactive doses exclusively to HCC is limited with conventional external irradiation techniques. This review examines a number of radiotherapeutic techniques used to treat HCC, and the radiopharmaceuticals associated with those techniques.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment has entered the immunotherapy era, characterized by multiple systemic and locoregional therapeutic options. Understanding how each modality modulates the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) is essential to optimize treatment strategies. The cancer-immunity cycle provides a conceptual basis for antitumor immunity, consisting of a priming phase involving antigen release and T-cell activation, and an effector phase characterized by cytotoxic T-cell-mediated tumor elimination. Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based combinations play a central role in HCC

IMPORTANCE: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is the second most common primary liver malignancy, and incidence is increasing worldwide. Despite advances in multimodal therapy, 5-year overall survival remains approximately 9%, underscoring the urgent need for improved therapeutic strategies and comprehensive understanding of current management approaches.
OBSERVATIONS: Surgical resection with regional lymphadenectomy remains the cornerstone of curative therapy, with adjuvant capecitabine established as standard of care after resection. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy may be strongly considered

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths. Hepatic resection and liver transplantation are considered to be the preferred treatment for HCC. However, as novel therapeutic options such as image-guided locoregional therapies have emerged and been refined, the manner in which HCC is treated has changed dramatically compared with what it was considered just 2 decades earlier.
SUMMARY: This study reviews the current results of various image-guided locoregional therapies for treating HCC, especially

BACKGROUND: Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) is increasingly used in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This treatment can induce or impair portal hypertension, leading to hepatic decompensation. TARE also promotes changes in liver and spleen volumes that may modify therapeutic decisions and outcomes after therapy.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the impact of TARE on the incidence of decompensation events and its predictive factors.
DESIGN: In all, 63 consecutive patients treated with TARE between February 2012 and December 2018 were retrospectively included.
METHODS:
