Evaluating the relationship between objective and subjective image quality in computed tomography using detectability index and three-dimensional-printed phantoms.

Achieving optimal image quality in computed tomography (CT) is essential for accurate diagnosis. This study explores the relationship between objective and subjective image quality, using the detectability index ($d^{\prime}$) as a quantitative performance metric. A 3D-printed anthropomorphic abdominal phantom was used to assess how variations in tube voltage, current, slice thickness, and reconstruction kernel affect image quality. Signal-to-noise ratio, contrast-to-noise ratio, and edge sharpness were evaluated alongside radiologist assessments. A strong correlation between $d^{\prime}$ and

Visibility of alveolar bone thicknesses on CBCT images-a study on minimum bone requirements using various reconstruction techniques, viewing modes, and resolutions.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate at which thickness marginal bone becomes visible to the observer on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and how reconstruction technique and viewing mode affect assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen anterior teeth from six human mandibles were examined with two CBCT resolution protocols: standard- and high-resolution. Distance from the cementoenamel junction to the visible marginal bone level (MBL) was measured in three groups of reconstructed CBCT images: multiplanar reformation (MPR) with grey scale, MPR with inverted grey scale, and 3D rendering. These

Annotation and characterization of lesions in breast tomosynthesis images.

Rapid adoption of artificial intelligence methods in breast imaging research emphasizes the need for large, appropriately curated image databases for development and validation. For digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), there are few public databases with only limited lesion annotation. Recently, we have developed Malmö Breast ImaginG (M-BIG), a large database of 104 791 women screened at Skåne University Hospital, Malmö. M-BIG also includes all images from the Malmö Breast Tomosynthesis Screening Trial, MBTST of 14 848 women, with 139 biopsy-confirmed cancers from DBT screening. To annotate les

Deformable registration of prone and supine colons for CT colonography.

CT colonography (CTC) is a non-invasive technique for detecting colorectal polyps and colon cancer. Through the addition of the prone scanning with the original supine scanning, the possibility of detecting the polyps is increased. The registration process for this application requires the comparison between the prone and supine colons for diagnosis. A level-set representation of the object boundary using a distance map is presented in this paper as an input to demons registration algorithm for supine and prone CT colonography image data. After first aligning the colon volumes based on the pat

Analytic noise-propagation in indirect fan-beam FBP reconstruction.

Precise knowledge of the local image noise is an essential ingredient to efficient application of post-processing methods such as wavelet or diffusion filtering to computed tomography (CT) images. The non-stationary, object dependent nature of noise in CT images is a direct result from the noise present in the projection data. Since quantum and electronics noise are the dominating noise sources, comparably simple models can be used for direct noise estimates in the individual projections. In this article, we describe the analytic propagation of these noise estimates through fan-beam filtered b

Improved swin transformer-based thorax disease classification with optimal feature selection using chest X-ray.

Thoracic diseases, including pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung cancer, and others, pose significant health risks and require timely and accurate diagnosis to ensure proper treatment. Thus, in this research, a model for thorax disease classification using Chest X-rays is proposed by considering deep learning model. The input is pre-processed by resizing, normalizing pixel values, and applying data augmentation to address the issue of imbalanced datasets and improve model generalization. Significant features are extracted from the images using an Enhanced Auto-Encoder (EnAE) model, which combines a

Clinical knowledge-guided hybrid classification network for automatic periodontal disease diagnosis in X-ray image.

Accurate classification of periodontal disease through panoramic X-ray images carries immense clinical importance for effective diagnosis and treatment. Recent methodologies attempt to classify periodontal diseases from X-ray images by estimating bone loss within these images, supervised by manual radiographic annotations for segmentation or keypoint detection. However, these annotations often lack consistency with the clinical gold standard of probing measurements, potentially causing measurement inaccuracy and leading to unstable classifications. Additionally, the diagnosis of periodontal di

Weakly supervised chest X-ray abnormality localization with non-linear modulation and foreground control.

Chest X-ray is widely used to diagnose lung diseases. Due to the demand for accelerating analysis and interpretation to reduce the workload of radiologists, there has been a growing interest in building automated systems of chest X-ray abnormality localization. However, fully supervised methods usually require well-trained radiologists to annotate bounding boxes manually, which is labor-intensive and time-consuming. As a result, weakly supervised chest X-ray abnormality localization is gaining increasing attention because it only requires image-level annotations. Existing weakly supervised obj

Breast Mass Detection and Classification Using Machine Learning Approaches on Two-Dimensional Mammogram: A Review.

Breast cancer is a leading cause of mortality among women, both in India and globally. The prevalence of breast masses is notably common in women aged 20 to 60. These breast masses are classified, according to the breast imaging-reporting and data systems (BI-RADS) standard, into categories such as fibroadenoma, breast cysts, benign, and malignant masses. To aid in the diagnosis of breast disorders, imaging plays a vital role, with mammography being the most widely used modality for detecting breast abnormalities over the years. However, the process of identifying breast diseases through mammo

Enhanced Diagnosis of Pneumothorax with an Improved Real-Time Augmentation for Imbalanced Chest X-rays Data Based on DCNN.

Pneumothorax is a common pulmonary disease that can lead to dyspnea and can be life-threatening. X-ray examination is the main means to diagnose this disease. Computer-aided diagnosis of pneumothorax on chest X-ray, as a prerequisite for a timely cure, has been widely studied, but it is still not satisfactory to achieve highly accurate results. In this paper, an image classification algorithm based on the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is proposed for high-resolution medical image analysis of pneumothorax X-rays, which features a Network In Network (NIN) for cleaning the data, random

Analysis of Tuberculosis in Chest Radiographs for Computerized Diagnosis using Bag of Keypoint Features.

Chest radiography is the most preferred non-invasive imaging technique for early diagnosis of Tuberculosis (TB). However, lack of radiological expertise in TB detection leads to indiscriminate chest radiograph (CXR) screening. A modest classification approach based on the local image description to detect subtle characteristics of TB using CXRs is highly recommended. In this work, an attempt has been made to classify normal and TB CXR images using Bag of Features (BoF) approach with Speeded-Up Robust Feature (SURF) descriptor. The images are obtained from a public database. Lung fields segment

A new approach for detecting abnormalities in mammograms using a computer-aided windowing system based on Otsu's method.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide. This study aimed to provide an automatic windowing method in mammograms, based on the principles of Otsu's thresholding function, to help radiologists more easily detect abnormalities on mammograms. A total of 322 mammographic images from the Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS) database were used in the present study. The image background was removed based on Otsu's method. After selecting the threshold in the computer-aided windowing (CAW) system, the pixel values were kept larger than th

An automated method for detecting architectural distortions on mammograms using direction analysis of linear structures.

Architectural distortion is one of the most important findings when evaluating mammograms for breast cancer. Abnormal breast architecture is characterized by the presence of spicules, which are distorted mammary structures that are not accompanied by an increased density or mass. We have been developing an automated method for detecting spiculated architectural distortions by analyzing linear structures extracted by normal curvature. However, some structures that are possibly related to distorted areas are not extracted using this method. The purpose of this study was to develop a new automate

Automatic tuberculosis screening using chest radiographs.

Tuberculosis is a major health threat in many regions of the world. Opportunistic infections in immunocompromised HIV/AIDS patients and multi-drug-resistant bacterial strains have exacerbated the problem, while diagnosing tuberculosis still remains a challenge. When left undiagnosed and thus untreated, mortality rates of patients with tuberculosis are high. Standard diagnostics still rely on methods developed in the last century. They are slow and often unreliable. In an effort to reduce the burden of the disease, this paper presents our automated approach for detecting tuberculosis in convent
