Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a congenital disorder arising from sporadic mutation of the α-subunit of the Gs stimulatory protein. Osseous changes are characterised by the replacement and distortion of normal bone with poorly organised, structurally unsound, fibrous tissue. This study was designed to determine if radiologists' experience in mammography is associated with their performance in correctly interpreting mammograms. Study mammograms (n = 150) were chosen by stratified random sampling from those interpreted as normal, abnormal-benign or abnormal-suspicious for cancer, with oversampling of cancer cases. All medical malpractice lawsuits filed in Cook County, IL, from January 1, 1980, through June 30, 1986, were reviewed and compared with similar data for the period of January 1, 1975, through December 30, 1979.
