Genetic, environmental and gender influences on attachment disorder behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Despite current interest in attachment disorder, there is concern about its discrimination from other disorders and an unproven assumption of an environmental aetiology. AIMS: To test whether behaviours suggestive of attachment disorder are distinct from other childhood behavioural and emotional problems and are solely environmentally determined. METHOD: In a community sample of 13,472 twins, we carried out factor analysis of questionnaire items encompassing behaviours indicative of attachment disorder, conduct problems, hyperactivity and emotional difficulties. We used behaviour

The reunion process: A new focus in short-term dynamic psychotherapy.

Short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP) has established itself as an effective treatment for common psychological disorders, but little attention has been given to cases of treatment failure or relapse. In this article, I present a case of relapsing panic disorder. I suggest that STDP has focused mainly on the memories of disturbing past experience, but we have not systematically explored the positive memories of early attachment experiences. The negative memories are explored and processed until they are revised, resulting in less disturbing versions of the original events and new meanings fo

Potentially traumatic events in foster youth, and association with DSM-5 trauma- and stressor related symptoms.

BACKGROUND: In DSM 5, three disorders are related to trauma and/or maltreatment: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED) but how these disorders relate to each other and to traumatic events is unknown. OBJECTIVE: We examined 1. Prevalence of Potentially Traumatic Events (PTEs) and poly-victimization for youths in foster care. 2. Associations between single/multiple PTEs and PTSD, DSED, and the two symptom-clusters that constitute RAD: Failure to seek/accept comfort (RAD A), and Low social-emotional responsive

Personality disorders and romantic adult attachment: a comparison of secure and insecure attached child molesters.

This study analyzed personality disorders in a group of 33 securely and 51 insecurely attached child molesters. A total of 51 child molesters were selected from a community based educational training program, and the other group was selected from a Belgian prison (n = 33). Research shows that adult attachment styles and personality disorders share a common underlying structure. It is remarkable that very little is known about differences between securely and insecurely attached child molesters. In this study, the authors found that the schizoid personality disorder differed between securely an

Disruptive behaviour disorders: a systematic review of environmental antenatal and early years risk factors.

Disruptive behaviour disorders (DBDs), including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) are chronic disorders with significant overlap in aetiology and presentation. An integrative examination of environmental risk factors is lacking. Six literature searches of web-based bibliographic databases were completed to identify literature on DBDs in general and five disorders in particular: CD, ODD, ADHD, deficits of attention, motor control and perception, and reactive attachment disorder. Searches were filtered to focus on stud

Early childhood attachment and its impact on later life resilience: a comparison of resilient and non-resilient female siblings.

Prior research has repeatedly identified early childhood attachment as a primary protective factor. In this study the authors sought to assess if there were significant differences in the attachment levels of resilient females in comparison to their non-resilient female siblings. The authors examine, using standardized attachment scales, the levels of attachment through the use of an intra-family research design. The study consists of a comparative analysis of female inmates from five Midwestern state correctional departments to their resilient female siblings' attachments, in correlation with

[Pathological protective and defensive reactions in early childhood].

A group of pathological defenses has been observed in infants between three and eighteen months of age who have experienced danger and deprivation to an extreme degree. The early defenses, "avoidance", "freezing", and "fighting", are apparently summoned from a biological repertoire on the model of "flight or fight". Before there ist an ego, pain ca bei transformed into pleasure of obliterated from consciousness while a symptom stands in place of the original conflict.

Challenges in treating post-traumatic stress disorder and attachment trauma.

Treating women suffering from trauma poses significant challenges. The diagnostic prototype of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is based on single-event trauma, such as sexual assault in adulthood. Several effective cognitive- behavioral treatments for such traumas have been developed, although many treated patients continue to experience residual symptoms. Even more problematic is the complex developmental psychopathology stemming from a lifetime history of multiple traumas, often beginning with maltreatment in early attachment relationships. A history of attachment trauma undermines the

Treating disorganized attachment in the Group Attachment-Based Intervention (GABI©): A case study.

This paper describes the treatment of a mother and child who demonstrated disorganized attachment behaviors in their interactions with one another. The mother, who was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, felt incapable of managing her aggressive toddler and his emotional needs. The dyad was referred for therapy due to concerns about his developmental progress, evident delays having been mainly attributed to the problems observed within the parent-child relationship. The primary intervention applied to working with the dyad was the Group Attachment-Based Intervention (GABI©), develo

Pediatric bipolar disorder in an era of "mindless psychiatry".

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) reflects shifts in conceptualizing bipolar disorder among children and adolescents since the mid-1990s. Since then, PBD diagnoses, predominantly in the United States, have increased dramatically, and the diagnosis has attracted significant controversy. During the same period, psychiatric theory and practice has become increasingly biological. The aim of this paper is to examine the rise of PBD in terms of wider systemic influences. METHOD: In the context of literature referring to paradigm shifts in psychiatry, we reviewed the psychiatric literature

Disorganized attachment in early childhood: meta-analysis of precursors, concomitants, and sequelae.

During the past 10 years nearly 80 studies on disorganized attachment involving more than 6,000 infant-parent dyads have been carried out. The current series of meta-analyses have established the reliability and discriminant validity of disorganized infant attachment. Although disorganized attachment behavior is necessarily difficult to observe and often subtle, many researchers have managed to become reliable coders. Furthermore, disorganized attachment shows modest short- and long-term stability, in particular in middle class environments, and it is not just a concomitant of constitutional,

Relationship of bipolar disorder with psychiatric comorbidity in the postpartum period-a scoping review.

Childbirth can trigger a variety of psychiatric disorders; however, no disorder is as profoundly affected by childbirth as bipolar disorder. Rates of psychiatric comorbidity especially anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and substance use disorders are quite high in individuals with bipolar disorder. The purpose of this scoping review is to ascertain the effect of childbirth on the relationship between the onset of bipolar disorder and comorbid psychiatric disorders. On June 27, 2017, a search of the Medline, PsycINFO, CINHAL, EMBASE, SCOPUS, COCHRANE, and ISI-Web of Science (WOS

Parental divorce in childhood is related to lower urinary oxytocin concentrations in adulthood.

Oxytocin has been shown to be important for social behavior and emotional attachments in early life and may also mediate effects of early experiences on social motivation in adulthood. In animal models, early maternal separation results in alterations in the oxytocin system, with effects on sexual, maternal, and stress reactivity behaviors in adulthood. Studies of children experiencing parental divorce find effects on mood disorders, substance abuse, and other behaviors in adulthood. Here, we examine the effect of divorce on adult urine oxytocin levels. To stimulate oxytocin release, participa

Attachment and borderline personality disorder.

The author outlines his concept of reflective function or mentalization, which is defined as the capacity to think about mental states in oneself and in others. He presents evidence to suggest that the capacity for reflective awareness in a child's caregiver increases the likelihood of the child's secure attachment, which in turn facilitates the development of mentalization in the child. He proposes that a secure attachment relationship offers the child a chance to explore the mind of the caregiver, and in this way to learn about minds; he formulates this model of the birth of the psychologica

Mentalizing Subtypes in Eating Disorders: A Latent Profile Analysis.

Background: Mentalizing, the mental capacity to understand oneself and others in terms of mental states, has been found to be reduced in several mental disorders. Some studies have suggested that eating disorders (EDs) may also be associated with impairments in mentalizing. The aim of this work is to investigate the possible presence of mentalizing subtypes in a sample of patients with EDs. Method: A sample of patients with eating disorders (N = 157) completed a battery of measures assessing mentalization and related variables, including the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ), the Diff

Epidermolysis bullosa herpetiformis (Dowling-Meara type) exhibits ultrastructural derangement of tonofilaments and desmosomes.

Ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies of clinically intact skin obtained from three severe neonatal cases of epidermolysis bullosa herpetiformis (Dowling-Meara type) demonstrated disorders in the assembly of keratin intermediate filaments and desmosomes of the keratinocytes. During mitosis, K5- and K14-positive and K1- and K10-negative tonofilaments were disrupted and formed spherical bodies associated with intracytoplasmic desmosomes by invagination of the desmosomes and the adjacent plasma membrane. During the invagination process, destructive changes in the internalized membrane w

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of maternal social phobia with maternal bonding and infant attachment in a prospective-longitudinal study (MARI study, N = 306). METHOD: A subsample of 46 women with and without lifetime social phobia (Composite International Diagnostic Interview for Women, CIDI-V) and their infants was investigated. Mothers reported antenatal and postnatal bonding (MAAS, MPAS). Infants’ attachment classifications/behavior were observed in the strange situation test at 16 months after delivery. RESULTS: The rate of insecure attachment was higher in infants of mothers wit
