Recovery of sensorimotor function following sciatic nerve injury across multiple rat strains.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) can result in neurodegenerative changes leading to motor, sensory and autonomic dysfunction. Injury to the rat sciatic nerve is used to model pathophysiologic processes following PNI and assess the efficacy of therapeutic interventions. Frequently, temporal changes in the sciatic functional index (SFI), a measure of sensorimotor integration are measured in rats to assess functional recovery following sciatic nerve injury. However, multiple rat strains and behavioral endpoints have been employed to investigate pathophysiology of PNI and impact of therap

Anterior thalamic nuclei lesions and recovery of function: Relevance to cognitive thalamus.

Injury to the anterior thalamic nuclei (ATN) and their neural connections is the most consistent neuropathology associated with diencephalic amnesia. ATN lesions in rats produce memory impairments that support a key role for this region within an extended hippocampal system of complex overlapping neural connections. Environmental enrichment is a therapeutic tool that produces substantial, although incomplete, recovery of memory function after ATN lesions, even after the lesion-induced deficit has become established. Similarly, the neurotrophic agent cerebrolysin, also counters the negative eff

Congenital Cataract: Progress in Surgical Treatment and Postoperative Recovery of Visual Function.

Congenital cataract is a common cause of childhood low vision or blindness worldwide. Early surgery should be performed in sensitive vision development period to avoid vision deprivation in cases of strabismus and nystagmus development. Postoperative recovery of visual function is of great significance for these patients and should include proper postoperative aphakia correction by the application of a contact lens and secondary implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). Patients should receive amblyopic training after surgery to improve their postoperative visual acuity. Although recent advan

Recovery of olfactory function induces neuroplasticity effects in patients with smell loss.

The plasticity of brain function, especially reorganization after stroke or sensory loss, has been investigated extensively. Based upon its special characteristics, the olfactory system allows the investigation of functional networks in patients with smell loss, as it holds the unique ability to be activated by the sensorimotor act of sniffing, without the presentation of an odor. In the present study, subjects with chronic peripheral smell loss and healthy controls were investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare functional networks in one of the major olfactory

Recovery of function processes in human amnesia: evidence from transient global amnesia.

There are few clues as to the processes that underlie recovery of function from human amnesia. Evidence is offered from the perspective of a study of recovery of function during an episode of transient global amnesia (TGA) that occurred as a complication of a cerebral angiographic procedure being carried out in a neurosciences centre, and where there was therefore a unique opportunity to examine acute changes in memory function. This allowed us to conduct the first quantitative study where shrinkage of anterograde and retrograde memory loss was plotted at four separate intervals throughout the

Recovery of memory and executive function following anterior communicating artery aneurysm rupture.

We studied the recovery of memory and executive function in 10 patients following anterior communicating artery aneurysm (ACoA) rupture and repair. Patients were tested at 2 consecutive points in time following surgery (approximately at 2 and 3 months). At the first testing, the patients divided into 2 groups based on the severity of impairment on executive measures. Both groups had severe anterograde amnesia, but only patients with severe executive impairments had retrograde amnesia with a temporal gradient. At second testing, both groups had persistent severe anterograde amnesia. The dysexec

Comparison of Respiratory function recovery after esophagectomy: a retrospective analysis of surgical approaches.

BACKGROUND: Esophagectomy for patients with esophageal cancer is a highly invasive procedure that can lead to substantial postoperative pulmonary impairment. Minimally invasive approaches, such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE), have been introduced to improve postoperative outcomes. This study aimed to assess the impact of surgical approach on postoperative pulmonary function recovery. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent esophagectomy between 2006 and 2023. Patients were categorized

Recovery of locomotor function after treadmill training of incomplete spinal cord injured rats.

Our long-term goal is to formulate and assess functional methodologies to enhance recovery of locomotor function in human subjects after incomplete Spinal Cord Contusion Injury (iSCI). This methodology could consist of locomotor training by active treadmill walking. Here, we present kinematic analysis of limb movements in rats with iSCI that have undergone treadmill-walking training. Video images were recorded during treadmill walking of iSCI rats at different intervals from 2 weeks to 24 weeks post injury and in age matched rats without injury. A kinematic analysis program was used to acquire

Effect of corticosteroid treatment on the recovery of pulmonary function in farmer's lung.

The effect of corticosteroid treatment on the course of farmer's lung (FL) was studied in 36 patients randomly allocated in a double-blind placebo-controlled study. All patients were in the acute stage of the disease and had had the first diagnosed attack of FL. Twenty patients were given prednisolone treatment for 8 wk. Sixteen patients received an 8-wk placebo treatment. One patient was withdrawn from the analysis when she terminated corticosteroid treatment because of side effects. After 1 month of treatment there was a significant difference (p = 0.03) in DLCO between the treatment groups.
