A novel framework for human object classification in flooded environments using YOLOv12n and FastGRNN-MBT.

Flood is the most alarming and devastating natural disasters, which poses significant threats to communities around the world. Flood causes significant destruction to critical infrastructure, human lives, and properties. Thus, it is important to detect humans in flood-related disasters. Nowadays, various techniques are employed for human object classification in a flooded environment, but these did not maintain high classification accuracy and often misclassified objects as humans. This paper presents a Fast Gated Recurrent Neural Network-based Mean Binary cross entropy Taylor concept (FastGRN

Classification of tetraplegics through automatic movement evaluation.

The general problem of classification of functional movements in humans with spinal cord injuries requires the following questions to be answered: what are the essential kinematic parameters that we have to observe during the movement? Is it possible to estimate preserved motor skills based on kinematics? Which computational method for identification is suited to geometric feature analysis? To answer these questions we have developed the methodology which has two phases: (1) recordings of a series of specified arm movements; and (2) custom made software for graphical presentation of arm moveme

Machine learning application for prediction of locoregional recurrences in early oral tongue cancer: a Web-based prognostic tool.

Estimation of risk of recurrence in early-stage oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) remains a challenge in the field of head and neck oncology. We examined the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict recurrences in early-stage OTSCC. A Web-based tool available for public use was also developed. A feedforward neural network was trained for prediction of locoregional recurrences in early OTSCC. The trained network was used to evaluate several prognostic parameters (age, gender, T stage, WHO histologic grade, depth of invasion, tumor budding, worst pattern of invasion, perineu

Privacy-Preserving Framework for Multi-Institutional Medical Time-Series Analysis via Homomorphic Encryption: Design and Development Study.

BACKGROUND: The development of robust medical AI for knowledge discovery and decision support commonly necessitates large-scale datasets from multiple institutions. However, such data aggregation is severely constrained by privacy regulations and the inherent risk of sensitive information leakage, making it difficult to navigate the utility-privacy trade-off. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to design a secure multiparty deep learning system that enables privacy-preserving modeling from distributed medical time-series data without centralizing raw information or exposing model parameters. Our goal was to

Doing without schema hierarchies: a recurrent connectionist approach to normal and impaired routine sequential action.

In everyday tasks, selecting actions in the proper sequence requires a continuously updated representation of temporal context. Previous models have addressed this problem by positing a hierarchy of processing units, mirroring the roughly hierarchical structure of naturalistic tasks themselves. The present study considers an alternative framework, in which the representation of context depends on recurrent connections within a network mapping from environmental inputs to actions. The ability of this approach to account for human performance was evaluated by applying it, through simulation, to

Exponentiated gradient learning yields brain-like synaptic distributions.

Artificial neural networks trained with gradient descent (GD) are widely used to model brain learning, but GD allows synapses to switch between excitatory and inhibitory and produces weight distributions unlike those observed experimentally. We show that an alternative rule, exponentiated gradient (EG), avoids these problems because its multiplicative, exponential weight updates mathematically prohibit synapses from changing sign and preferentially scale already-large weights, naturally generating log-normal distributions. This mechanism also concentrates task-relevant computation onto a small

Manifold-constrained plasticity enables stable learning in recurrent neural circuits.

The activity of large neuronal populations is often confined to low-dimensional manifolds that can drift over time, posing a challenge for learning rules that assume stable, full-rank representations. Here, we introduce SPLiT (Synaptic Projection Learning with intrinsic Tracking), a synaptic plasticity rule for recurrent neural networks that combines unsupervised manifold tracking with supervised learning. SPLiT uses an online Oja rule to continuously estimate the intrinsic low-dimensional activity subspace and performs normalized least-mean-squares learning in manifold coordinates. In this wa

Recurrent connections facilitate occluded object recognition by explaining-away.

Despite the ubiquity of recurrent connections in the brain, their role in visual processing is less understood than that of feedforward connections. Occluded object recognition, an important cognitive capacity, is thought to rely on recurrent processing of visual information, but it remains unclear whether and how recurrent processing improves recognition of occluded objects. Using convolutional models of the visual system, we demonstrate how a distinct form of computation arises in recurrent-but not feedforward-networks that leverages information about the occluder to "explain-away" the occlu

Moving beyond linear summation to infer interaction order from neural and biological dynamics.

We introduce the three-body recurrent neural network (TBRNN), a recurrent model that explicitly incorporates quadratic, three-body interactions. We show that TBRNNs are universal approximators and extend low-rank recurrent neural network (RNN) theory to derive a corresponding low-rank TBRNN framework, allowing model rank to help discriminate between pairwise and higher-order dynamics. On canonical neuroscience tasks, TBRNNs exhibit solution geometries distinct from standard RNNs, indicating that higher-order interactions reshape accessible dynamical regimes rather than merely re-parameterizing

The Evolution of Modeling Approaches: From Statistical Models to Deep Learning for Locust and Grasshopper Forecasting.

Locust outbreaks cause a significant threat to global food security and ecosystem stability, with particularly severe consequences in grassland regions, where grasshoppers also exert considerable ecological pressure. In comparison to grasshoppers, locusts typically occur at much larger spatial scales, as their strong migratory ability and collective movement behavior lead to greater spatial connectivity and autocorrelation. The forecasting of both locust and grasshopper outbreaks remains a formidable scientific challenge, primarily due to the complex, nonlinear spatiotemporal interactions amon

A Structured and Methodological Review on Multi-View Human Activity Recognition for Ambient Assisted Living.

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) leverages technology to support the elderly and individuals with disabilities. A key challenge in these systems is efficient Human Activity Recognition (HAR). However, no study has systematically compared single-view (SV) and multi-view (MV) Human Activity Recognition approaches. This review addresses this gap by analyzing the evolution from single-view to multi-view recognition systems, covering benchmark datasets, feature extraction methods, and classification techniques. We examine how activity recognition systems have transitioned to multi-view architectures u

A Comprehensive Review on Deep Learning Techniques in Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a serious neurological illness that causes memory loss gradually by destroying brain cells. This deadly brain illness primarily strikes the elderly, impairing their cognitive and bodily abilities until brain shrinkage occurs. Modern techniques are required for an accurate diagnosis of AD. Machine learning has gained attraction in the medical field as a means of determining a person's risk of developing AD in its early stages. One of the most advanced soft computing neural network-based Deep Learning (DL) methodologies has garnered significant interest among research

Synergistic Pathways of Modulation Enable Robust Task Packing Within Neural Dynamics.

Understanding how brain networks learn and manage multiple tasks simultaneously is of interest in both neuroscience and artificial intelligence. In this regard, a recent research thread in theoretical neuroscience has focused on how recurrent neural network models and their internal dynamics enact multitask learning. To manage different tasks requires a mechanism to convey information about task identity or context into the model, which from a biological perspective may involve mechanisms of neuromodulation. In this study, we use recurrent network models to probe the distinctions between two f

Early identification of patients at risk for iron-deficiency anemia using deep learning techniques.

OBJECTIVES: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common health problem worldwide, and up to 10% of adult patients with incidental IDA may have gastrointestinal cancer. A diagnosis of IDA can be established through a combination of laboratory tests, but it is often underrecognized until a patient becomes symptomatic. Based on advances in machine learning, we hypothesized that we could reduce the time to diagnosis by developing an IDA prediction model. Our goal was to develop 3 neural networks by using retrospective longitudinal outpatient laboratory data to predict the risk of IDA 3 to 6 months be

Recurrent circuitry is required to stabilize piriform cortex odor representations across brain states.

Pattern completion, or the ability to retrieve stable neural activity patterns from noisy or partial cues, is a fundamental feature of memory. Theoretical studies indicate that recurrently connected auto-associative or discrete attractor networks can perform this process. Although pattern completion and attractor dynamics have been observed in various recurrent neural circuits, the role recurrent circuitry plays in implementing these processes remains unclear. In recordings from head-fixed mice, we found that odor responses in olfactory bulb degrade under ketamine/xylazine anesthesia while res

Reusable modular architecture enables flexible cognitive operations in the mouse brain and artificial recurrent networks.

Complex behaviors are thought to be built by combining simpler cognitive components. Computational modeling has shown that artificial neural networks can perform a variety of tasks by flexibly combining functional modules, each specialized for a specific computation, to construct a complex task. However, it is unknown whether reusable modular networks are found in the brain. Here, we show that mice performing a delayed match-to-sample with delayed report (DMS-dr) task reuse neuronal subspaces that were specialized for stimulus processing and memory maintenance. These subspaces were reused duri
