Common Ictal and Interictal Perfusion Patterns: A Window into the Epileptogenic Network and SUDEP Mechanism in Drug-Resistant Focal Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Focal epilepsies have been described as a network disease. Noninvasive investigative techniques have been used to characterize epileptogenic networks. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe ictal and interictal cortical and subcortical perfusion patterns using single- photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). METHODS: Thirty-five interictal-ictal SPECT scans were obtained from 15 patients with DRE. A methodology was developed to get a relative perfusion index (PI) of 74 cortical and sub-cortical brain structures. K-means algorith

Brain neurotransmitters in dystonia musculorum deformans.

We examined histologically and biochemically the brains of two patients with generalized childhood-onset dystonia musculorum deformans. We found no important histologic changes in the basal ganglia, cerebral cortex, higher brain-stem nuclei, locus ceruleus, or raphe nuclei. Similarly, the activity of choline acetyltransferase and the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid and glutamic acid in the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia were within the control range. In contrast, the norepinephrine concentrations were markedly and consistently decreased in the lateral and posterior hypothalamus, mamillary

The vestibular nuclei in the domestic hen (Gallus domesticus). IV. The projection to the spinal cord.

Horseradish peroxidase was injected at various levels of the spinal cord of the hen and the cells in the brain stem, labeled due to retrograde transport of the tracer enzyme, were mapped with particular reference to the vestibular nuclear complex. The Deiters' nuclei project ipsilaterally to the spinal cord. The projection from the nucleus Deiters ventralis reaches down to the lumbosacral spinal cord. The spinal projection from the nucleus Deiters dorsalis is somatotopically organized. Cells localized rostrally within the nucleus project to upper parts of the spinal cord cells localized caudal

Synergic control in asymptomatic welders during multi-finger force exertion and load releasing while standing.

Motor synergies, i.e., neural mechanisms that organize multiple motor elements to ensure stability of actions, are affected by several neurological condition. Asymptomatic welders showed impaired synergy controlling the stability of multi-finger action compared to non-welders and this impairment was associated with microstructural damage in the globus pallidus. We further explored the effect of welding-related metal exposure on multi-finger synergy and extended our investigation to posture-stabilizing synergy during a standing task. Occupational, MRI, and performance-stabilizing synergies duri

Use of a tissue clearing technique combined with retrograde trans-synaptic viral tracing to evaluate changes in mouse retinorecipient brain regions following optic nerve crush.

Successful establishment of reconnection between retinal ganglion cells and retinorecipient regions in the brain is critical to optic nerve regeneration. However, morphological assessments of retinorecipient regions are limited by the opacity of brain tissue. In this study, we used an innovative tissue cleaning technique combined with retrograde trans-synaptic viral tracing to observe changes in retinorecipient regions connected to retinal ganglion cells in mice after optic nerve injury. Specifically, we performed light-sheet imaging of whole brain tissue after a clearing process. We found tha

Mechanisms and clinical application of photobiomodulation in pain therapy: a mini review.

Chronic pain remains a major clinical challenge, creating a need for safe, non-pharmacological interventions. This narrative mini-review examines two light-based approaches that differ in their sites of action and treatment parameters: visual-light exposure and local red or near-infrared light-emitting diode photobiomodulation. Visual-light exposure acts through retinal and central neural circuits, including pathways involving the ventrolateral geniculate nucleus, dorsal raphe nucleus, periaqueductal gray, medial secondary visual cortex, and anterior cingulate cortex. Its effects are wavelengt

Vertical gaze palsy induced by midbrain lesions and its structural imaging.

We experienced four cases of vertical gaze palsy induced by midbrain lesions. Lesions commonly covered the rostral midbrain, including the rostral interstitial nucleus, dorsomedial to the red nucleus. Two of the four cases resulted from vascular insult, in which a single, unpaired perforator is supposed to innervate the rostral midbrain and medial thalamus bilaterally. One case showed vertical gaze palsy accompanied by bilateral ptosis. The findings agree with recent experimental evidence that a neural substrate in eyelid control lies in the supraoculomotor area immediately dorsal to the oculo

Divergent roles of the acetyl-CoA synthetases RkACS1 and RkACS2 in carotenoid and lipid biosynthesis in Rhodosporidium kratochvilovae.

Red yeasts demonstrate considerable potential in industrial and biotechnological applications, particularly in the biosynthesis of carotenoids and lipids, which are valuable secondary metabolites with a wide range of applications. In the oleaginous red yeast Rhodosporidium kratochvilovae YM25235, the acetyl-CoA synthetases RkACS1 and RkACS2 play critical roles in converting acetate into acetyl-CoA, a key precursor for the synthesis of various metabolites, including carotenoids and lipids. This study explores the physiological functions and metabolic regulation of RkACS1 and RkACS2, revealing d

Neuropathological findings in brains of Bavarian cattle clinically suspected of bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

The brains of 26 Bavarian bovines clinically suspected of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) were the subject of a neuropathological evaluation containing histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Six animals tested positive for BSE. In these six brains severe histological lesions that correlated with previous reports from the United Kingdom were observed. Immunohistochemistry with prion protein (PrP(Sc)), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and synaptophysin were conducted on the mid-brain containing the red nucleus. All BSE-positive brains stained positively for PrP(Sc), and no plaques

Isolated complete unilateral ptosis with intact extraocular eye movements.

An 88-year-old woman presented with a 2-day history of inability to open her left eye with no ocular discomfort or blurred vision. She had a long-standing history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension and stroke disease. Examination revealed an isolated complete left eye ptosis with no pupillary involvement and intact extraocular movements. There were no other neurological deficits and fatigability was not elicited. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed an acute infarct of the left red nucleus. Oculomotor nerve fascicles are widely separated in the midbrain before they exit at the interp

Structural and functional connectivity of the nondecussating dentato-rubro-thalamic tract.

The dentato-rubro-thalamic tract (DRTT) regulates motor control, connecting the cerebellum to the thalamus. This tract is modulated by deep-brain stimulation in the surgical treatment of medically refractory tremor, especially in essential tremor, where high-frequency stimulation of the thalamus can improve symptoms. The DRTT is classically described as a decussating pathway, ascending to the contralateral thalamus. However, the existence of a nondecussating (i.e. ipsilateral) DRTT in humans was recently demonstrated, and these tracts are arranged in distinct regions of the superior cerebellar

Pan-neuronal imaging in roaming Caenorhabditis elegans.

We present an imaging system for pan-neuronal recording in crawling Caenorhabditis elegans. A spinning disk confocal microscope, modified for automated tracking of the C. elegans head ganglia, simultaneously records the activity and position of ∼80 neurons that coexpress cytoplasmic calcium indicator GCaMP6s and nuclear localized red fluorescent protein at 10 volumes per second. We developed a behavioral analysis algorithm that maps the movements of the head ganglia to the animal's posture and locomotion. Image registration and analysis software automatically assigns an index to each nucleus a

Impaired arpeggio movement in skilled reaching by rubrospinal tract lesions in the rat: a behavioral/anatomical fractionation.

Spinal cord injury damaging the rubrospinal tract (RST) interferes with skilled forelimb movement, but identification of the precise role of the RST in this behavior is impeded by the difficulty of surgically isolating the RST from other pathways running within the lateral funiculus (LF). The present study used a skilled reaching task and a behavioral/anatomical dissection method to identify the contribution of the RST to skilled forelimb movement. Rats were trained on the skilled reaching task and subjected to lesions of the LF. Based on histological evaluation, the animals were assigned to l

[A family of dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy: clinical and neuroradiologic studies].

We described a family of dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA). The mother presented with cerebellar ataxia at 35 years of age and thereafter her neurological symptoms became exacerbated. Her daughter had mental retardation during the preschool period and epilepsy at 10 years. Her son presented with epilepsy at 14 years. Their clinical phenotypes demonstrated maternal anticipation in this family. Genetical analysis of their DNA revealed CAG repeat expansion of the DRPLA gene, the number of which was 51 (mother), 65 (her daughter), and 53 (her son). MR imaging showed disappearance of T,

Characterization of dopaminergic projections from the ventral tegmental area and the dorsal raphe nucleus to the orbital frontal cortex.

The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is a key node in the cortico-limbic-striatal circuitry that influences decision-making guided by the relative value of outcomes. Midbrain dopamine from either the ventral tegmental area (VTA) or the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) has the potential to modulate OFC neurons; however, it is unknown at what concentrations these terminals release dopamine. Male and female adult dopamine transporter (DAT)IRES-Cre-tdTomato mice were injected with AAV2/8-EF1a-DIO-eYFP into either the DRN or the VTA or the retrograde label cholera toxin B (CTB) 488 in the medial or lateral OFC

[A report of two siblings with both maternal dentato-rubro-pallido-luysian atrophy and paternal Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type III].

The report deals with the first description of two siblings, a 43-year-old woman and 39-year-old man, who have developed cerebellar ataxia, choreoathetosis, dementia, epilepsy, hyperelasticity of the skin, and hypermobility and dislocation of joints. The frequent dislocations of joints sometimes could not be corrected surgically. Their mother and maternal uncle have the same neurological signs and symptoms as the siblings do. However, they do not present with the signs of skin and joints. Gene analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes from these 4 patients revealed that the CAG repeat length of

"Rubral" tremor after thalamic haemorrhage.

Tremors in association with thalamic haemorrhage have been infrequently reported, and delayed rubral tremor as a complication of such an event is quite rare. We describe a patient with a combined resting-postural-kinetic tremor due a thalamic haemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging showed evidence of a subthalamic involvement but failed to reveal any mesencephalic lesion. Five years after the original stroke there was rapid and almost complete suppression of her abnormal movements, probably related to an ischaemic capsular lesion. Involuntary movements, which resemble rubral tremor, can be due

Rubral tremor: clinical features and treatment of three cases.

Rubral tremor is characterized by a slow coarse tremor at rest that is exacerbated by postural adjustments and by guided voluntary movements. Some authorities have questioned whether it should be regarded as a distinct clinical entity. We observed three cases of rubral tremor following stroke and studied the movements by videotape recordings. The tremors were very similar in the three cases, and all showed plastic rigidity and dystonic posturing of the affected limbs. Rehabilitation difficulties out of proportion to the motor deficit were present, but all three patients responded favourably to

ACUTE NONCOMPRESSIVE NUCLEUS PULPOSUS EXTRUSION CAUSING PARAPLEGIA IN A SIBERIAN TIGER ( PANTHERA TIGRIS ALTAICA).

A neutered male Siberian tiger ( Panthera tigris altaica) presented with paraplegia of 5 days' duration. Thoracolumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a focal, linear T2-W hyperintense intramedullary lesion at the level of T10-11 as well as reduced size of the nucleus pulposus of the T10-11 intervertebral disc. The animal was humanely euthanatized as a result of the severity of clinical signs and the poor prognosis. The sorting of blood group active proteins during enucleation.

Enucleation represents the critical stage during red blood cell development when the nucleus is extruded from an orthochromatic erythroblast in order to generate a nascent immature reticulocyte. Extrusion of the nucleus results in loss of a proportion of the erythroblast plasma membrane, which surrounds the nucleus, the bulk of the endoplasmic reticulum and a small region of cytoplasm. For this reason enucleation provides an important point in erythroblast differentiation at which proteins not required for the function of the erythrocyte can be lost, whilst those that are important for the str
