Micronutrient status in lactating mothers before and after introduction of fortified flour: cross-sectional surveys in Maela refugee camp.

BACKGROUND: Deficiency of micronutrients is common in refugee populations. OBJECTIVES: Identify deficiencies and whether provided supplements and wheat flour fortified with 10 micronutrients impacts upon status among breast-feeding women from Maela refugee camp. METHODS: Two sequential cross-sectional studies were conducted in different groups of lactating mothers at 12 weeks postpartum. The first survey was before and the second 4-5 months after micronutrient fortified flour (MFF) had been provided to the camp (in addition to the regular food basket). Iron status and micronutrients were mea

Neglected tropical diseases elimination activities in South Sudan's largest refugee camp: lessons from 2 years of work.

Maban County, home to South Sudan's largest refugee camps, faces complex health and humanitarian challenges and is co-endemic for lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. The division into two Implementation Units, one for the host community and the other one for the refugee camps, as recommended by the WHO Expanded Special Project for Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (ESPEN), has improved the visibility of the refugee population, ensuring tailored planning and equitable inclusion in all stages of treatment delivery. Conducting mass drug administration campaigns in refugee camps requ

Screening of Neurodevelopmental and Psychiatric Disorders in School-Aged Children from Sahrawi Refugee Camp: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

Background/Objectives: The prevalence of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in children is a growing concern in developed countries. However, data from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain scarce. The objective of this study was to ascertain the prevalence of such conditions in the school-aged children residing in Sahrawi refugee camps. In particular, the objective was to develop a bespoke screening instrument for the collection of epidemiological data and the examination of the impact of these disorders on academic performance and school life. Methods: A cross-sectional o

The Burden and Risk Factors Associated with Infectious Diseases among Refugees in a Camp for Migrants in Porto Alegre: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Refugees usually face a disproportionate burden of infectious diseases. Recently, Brazil has experienced an influx of refugees which demands the need for scaling up public health efforts to address the challenges. The research sought to study the burden and risk factors associated with infectious diseases among refugees received in the city of Porto Alegre. This was a cross-sectional study of 261 newly arrived refugees. The study sample was predominantly composed of Venezuelans (50.6%) and Haitians (44%), male (146: 56.7%), single (30.7%), with an average age of 33.38 (± 7.30) years. The avera

The Costs and Cost-Effectiveness of a Two-Dose Oral Cholera Vaccination Campaign: A Case Study in a Refugee Camp Setting in Thailand.

Oral cholera vaccination (OCV) campaigns are increasingly used to prevent cholera outbreaks; however, little is known about their cost-effectiveness in refugee camps. We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of a pre-emptive OCV campaign in the Maela refugee camp in Thailand, where outbreaks occurred with an annual incidence rate (IR) of up to 10.7 cases per 1000. Data were collected via health sector records and interviews and household interviews. In the base-case scenario comparing the OCV campaign with no campaign, we estimated the campaign effect on the cholera IR and case fatality rate

The EmpaTeach intervention for reducing physical violence from teachers to students in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp: A cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: School-based violence prevention interventions offer enormous potential to reduce children's experience of violence perpetrated by teachers, but few have been rigorously evaluated globally and, to the best of our knowledge, none in humanitarian settings. We tested whether the EmpaTeach intervention could reduce physical violence from teachers to students in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp, Tanzania. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a 2-arm cluster-randomised controlled trial with parallel assignment. A complete sample of all 27 primary and secondary schools in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp were

An entomological investigation of the likely impact of cattle ownership on malaria in an Afghan refugee camp in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan.

Field trials were undertaken to determine the effect of close proximity of humans to livestock on the human biting rates exhibited by various anophelines. The results indicate that proximity to cattle and to goats increases the subject's chances of being bitten by anophelines. Man-biting by Anopheles stephensi rose by 38% (8-68% CI) in the presence of a cow, and by 50% (16-84% CI) in the presence of two goats. Other species exhibited similar trends. These findings explain the results of an earlier trial which revealed that malaria prevalence was higher amongst families that kept cattle than th

Prevalence and socio-demographic factors associated with undernutrition among HIV-positive women of reproductive age in Mahama refugee camp, Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Despite the distribution of food rations, the existence of feeding programs, and the provision of free medical care, malnutrition and morbidity continue to pose a threat to women and children, who are the most nutritionally susceptible groups, especially during emergencies. When people consume less energy and nutrients than they require to maintain their health, it is called undernutrition. Undernutrition is still a major public health issue in many low- and middle-income countries, including Rwanda, despite significant advancements. Women and children are the most nutritionally su

Mental health disorders, and associated factors among children aged 6-17 years living in Mahama refugee camp in Rwanda.

Children living in refugee camps are negatively affected by adverse mental health outcomes due to traumatic experiences and living conditions such as food insecurity. However, the mental health disorders of children living in refugee camps of Rwanda have not yet been empirically reported. This study, therefore, assessed the prevalence and associated factors of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicidal ideation among children living in a refugee setting, with particular focus on the association with food insecurity. This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 500 chil

Gender-based violence and its association with mental health among Somali women in a Kenyan refugee camp: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: In conflict-affected settings, women and girls are vulnerable to gender-based violence (GBV). GBV is associated with poor long-term mental health such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Understanding the interaction between current violence and past conflict-related violence with ongoing mental health is essential for improving mental health service provision in refugee camps. METHODS: Using data collected from 209 women attending GBV case management centres in the Dadaab refugee camps, Kenya, we grouped women by recent experience of GBV using latent

Same space, different place: Human rights violations, political violence, deprivation and mental health in Palestinian refugee camps and the urban socio-spatial environment of the West Bank, occupied Palestinian territory.

Palestinian refugee camps in the occupied West Bank share the same geographic space as adjacent urban neighbourhoods but remain socially, politically and institutionally distinct. This study examined whether refugee camp residence is associated with greater exposure to human rights violations, political violence, deprivation and poorer mental health. A cross-sectional survey of 3000 Palestinian adults was conducted in 2025 across three refugee camps and neighbouring urban areas. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted. Overall, 77.1% reported at least one human rights violation, 91.7%

Exploring sources of insecurity for Ethiopian Oromo and Somali women who have given birth in Kakuma Refugee Camp: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 44,000 people are forced to flee their homes every day due to conflict or persecution. Although refugee camps are designed to provide a safe temporary location for displaced persons, increasing evidence demonstrates that the camps themselves have become stressful and dangerous long-term places-especially for women. However, there is limited literature focused on refugee women's perspectives on their insecurity. This qualitative study sought to better understand the ways in which women experienced insecurity at a refuge

Empirical lessons regarding contraception in a protracted refugee setting: A descriptive study from Maela camp on the Thai-Myanmar border 1996 - 2015.

Conflict settings and refugee camps can be chaotic places, with large and rapid population movements, exacerbated public health problems, and ad hoc health services. Reproductive health care that includes family planning is of heightened importance in such settings, however, funding and resources tend to be constrained and geared towards acute health services such as trauma management and infectious disease containment. Here we report on the complexities and challenges of providing family planning in a post-emergency refugee setting, using the example of the largest refugee camp on the Thai-My

Comparison of three pyrethroid treatments of top-sheets for malaria control in emergencies: entomological and user acceptance studies in an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan.

Insecticide-treated bedding materials (sheets and blankets) could be protective against vectors of malaria and leishmaniasis--especially in complex emergencies, epidemics and natural disasters where people are more likely to sleep in exposed situations. Comparison of cotton top-sheets impregnated with different pyrethroids (permethrin 500 mg/m2, deltamethrin 25 mg/m2 or alphacypermethrin 25 mg/m2) for effectiveness against mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) was undertaken in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Predominant species encountered were Anopheles stephensi Liston, An. pulcherrimus Theobald, An.
