PURPOSE: We aimed to examine alterations of brain regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) in tinnitus patients using arterial spin labeling (ASL), and applied an integrative imaging-transcriptomics approach to explore the potential transcriptional and cellular correlates of these changes.
METHODS: Participants included tinnitus patients (n = 56) and healthy controls (HCs) (n = 57). CBF images were acquired using an ASL sequence and analyzed. We used partial least square (PLS) regression to examine the spatial association between human brain gene expression (from the Allen Human Brain Atlas) and re

Aerobic exercise elicits increases in cerebral blood flow (CBF), as well as core body temperature; however, the isolated influence of temperature on CBF regulation during exercise has not been investigated The present study assessed CBF regulation and neurovascular coupling during submaximal cycling exercise and temperature-matched passive heat stress during isocapnia (i.e. end-tidal PCO2 was held constant) Submaximal cycling exercise and temperature-matched passive heat stress provoked ∼16% increases in vertebral artery blood flow, independent of changes in end-tidal PCO2 and blood pressure E

Objectives: While evidence that episodes of mania in bipolar I are associated with changes in bioenergetic and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and cerebral blood flow velocity (rCBFV), both the regions and the extent of these changes have not yet been defined. Therefore, we determined the pattern of regional cerebral perfusion mania patients and using patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) as positive controls and healthy participants as negative controls. Methods: Twenty participants with mania, together with 22 MDD patients and 24 healthy volunteers, were recruited for this study.

Increasing evidence support the idea that hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is responsible for pathogenesis underlying cerebral, coronary, renal, and other vascular circulatory disorders and for hypertension. Impaired synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) in the endothelium or increased production of asymmetric dimethylarginine and activated oxygen species are involved in the impairment of vasodilator effects of NO. Impaired circulation in the brain derived from reduced synthesis and actions of NO would be an important triggering factor to dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Reduced actions of NO and brain h

We report the case of a patient with a long history of dysthymia and major depressive episodes requiring repeated hospitalization. We describe the most recent episode, associated with catatonia symptomatology and features suggestive of cognitive impairment. The absence of a clear initial psychopharmacological response alongside the clinical severity made the patient a potential candidate for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). A regional cerebral blood flow SPECT (SPECT-rCBF), performed to rule out concomitant Alzheimer disease (AD), revealed a markedly decreased neocortical uptake, with no defin

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of preventable death and serious morbidity, with subsequent low cerebral blood flow (CBF) considered to be associated with poor prognosis. In the present study, we demonstrated the effect of the free radical scavenger edaravone on regional CBF (rCBF) after TBI. Male mice (C57/BL6) were subjected to TBI using a controlled cortical impactor device. Immediately after TBI, the animals were intravenously administered 3.0 mg/kg of edaravone or a vehicle saline solution. Two-dimensional rCBF images were acquired before and 24 h post-TBI, and were quantifi

A 52-year-old woman with musical hallucinations was examined using brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with 99mTc-ECD. Changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) after carbamazepine treatment were assessed using a three-dimensional stereotaxic ROI template. Following treatment, rCBF was decreased in the subcortical structures and increased in the global cortical regions. From our findings, we propose that rCBF values in subcortical structures represent abnormalities similar to those reported in previous reports or other psychiatric disorders, while those in cortical re

The aim of this study was to examine the intracranial pressure (ICP) and regional cerebral blood flow (rCoBF) changes during the acute stage of severe head injury and to improve outcome by modifying treatment modalities using real-time ICP and rCoBF data. Twenty patients with moderate or severe head injury that were monitored in our neurosurgical intensive care unit were included in this study. The changes in ICP, rCoBF and the relationship of ICP/rCoBF were observed. In patients with high ICP and low rCoBF, mannitol improves the rCoBF and decreases the ICP of these patients. When low rCoBF ex

BACKGROUND: Cocaine dependence follows a different disease course in men and women, possibly as a consequence of sex-specific neurobiologic responses to chronic cocaine use. We have previously reported that male cocaine-dependent subjects demonstrate a significantly different limbic response to the limbic-stimulus procaine, as measured by regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), compared with male controls. In this study, we assessed the limbic rCBF response to procaine in female cocaine-addicted subjects (n=10) and female controls (n=10).
METHODS: Subjects were administered 1.38 mg/kg procaine o

UNLABELLED: The aim of our work was to evaluate changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with TIA and/or completed stroke and localisation of fotopenic foci in basal conditions and, in some cases, after stimulation pharmacological trial with acetazolamide. One hundred and fifty three patients participated in the study--105 with completed stroke and 48 with TIA. Regional CBF (rCBF) was evaluated using a single-headed rotating gamma camera (Diacam, Siemens) with high resolution collimator, after injection of 740 MBq 99mTc-HMPAO (Ceretec, Amersham). Sixteen patients with TIA und

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with blepharospasm have abnormal sensorimotor processing similar to patients with writer's cramp.
BACKGROUND: Blepharospasm is a focal dystonia manifest by involuntary, excessive blinking and squeezing of the eyes. Altered sensorimotor processing may contribute to the development of dystonic movements. Previously the authors demonstrated decreased vibration-induced cortical blood flow responses in hand primary sensorimotor area (PSA) in patients with hand dystonia.
METHODS: In this prospective, case-control study, seven patients with blepharospasm wer

UNLABELLED: We sought to determine if there are regional differences in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral metabolic ratio for oxygen (CMRO2) in normal subjects during the resting state.
METHODS: Regional CBF, CMRO2 and oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) in 15 normal volunteers (mean age 58.8 +/- 8.2 yr) were measured during rest using PET and a 15O-gas steady-state technique.
RESULTS: CBF and CMRO2 in the visual cortex were significantly higher than those in other cortices. Additionally, OEF in the sensorimotor cortex was significantly lower than that in other cortical regions.

The process of ageing involves many changes in the skin. These changes are not necessarily uniform, so the pattern of regional variations may vary with ageing. The aim of the present study was to assess age-related regional variations in skin function, by measuring the cutaneous microvascular response to histamine. Histamine was topically applied to the back and forearm of a young and an aged group of volunteers (n = 28, 14 in each group), and the response was quantified utilizing laser Doppler flowmetry. The following parameters were calculated from the data and compared between the two group

Relative regional cerebral blood flow (rrCBF) was measured by single-photon emission tomography (SPET), using technetium-99m-d,l-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (HMPAO) as flow tracer, in 23 patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). 1000 MBq 99mTc-HMPAO was given intravenously and the rrCBF calculated as regional/cerebellar count level ratios. The patients were examined before and 3-12 months after ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery. rrCBF was also determined in ten healthy aged matched volunteers who served as controls. The NPH patients had decreased rrCBF in the hippocampal regions

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to compare the ovine fetal response to severe, damaging asphyxia resulting from umbilical cord occlusion with that seen in uterine artery occlusion.
STUDY DESIGN: Six ovine fetuses were exposed to severe asphyxia produced by partial umbilical cord occlusion for 90 minutes. Fetal blood pressure and heart rate, blood gases, acid base status, electrocorticogram, and electromyogram were recorded. Regional blood flow (radioactive microspheres) measurements were performed at control and 30, 60, and 90 minutes of occlusion and 30 minutes after release.
RESULTS: During the

Twenty-five out of 26 cases of autopsy-verified frontal lobe degeneration of non-Alzheimer type (FLD) were found to have focal frontal or frontotemporal blood flow reductions involving both hemispheres. The deviant case had an asymmetric frontal pathology only apparent on the right side. Focal reduction of blood flow in the frontal lobes is, however, a common and unspecific flow abnormality found in e.g. Pick's disease. Creutzfeldt-Jakob's disease, and in some cases of Alzheimer's disease. Low frontal flow has also been reported in schizophrenia and in toxic encephalopathy. Since a characteris

Cerebral blood flow velocity was assessed during infusion of indomethacin over 30 minutes. Eleven preterm infants with symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus were studied on 12 occasions. Indomethacin infusion was associated with a significant reduction in time averaged mean velocity (TAMV), peak systolic velocity (PSV), and end diastolic velocity in both the anterior cerebral artery and middle cerebral artery. The fall in the TAMV and PSV was gradual with maximal change 30-40 minutes after the start of the infusion. It was concluded that administration of indomethacin by slow infusion produces

N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists and voltage-dependent calcium channel antagonists were tested to determine potential effects on regional cerebral blood flow in the normal rabbit brain. Ketamine had no effects on cortical or hippocampal blood flow, but was found to significantly decrease blood flow in the inferior colliculus. MK-801 decreased blood flow in almost all regions of the brain tested. On the other hand, nimodipine significantly increased flow in the cortex, hippocampus, and tegmentum. Dextromethorphan and dextrorphan, which have been shown to act at the NMDA receptor as well

Using the radioactive microsphere technique regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and total CBF (tCBF) were examined in rats at three time periods: baseline (CBF1) during 1.5 MAC inspired isoflurane-oxygen anesthesia, CBF2; during 1.5 MAC inspired isoflurane anesthesia combined with hypotension induced by hemorrhage and CBF3; during isoflurane and hemorrhage plus phenylephrine infused to restore mean arterial pressure (MAP) to baseline. For CBF1 MAP was 89 +/- 3 mmHg (mean +/- SEM, n = 9) with PaCO2 44 +/- 1 mmHg. For CBF2 following graded hemorrhage MAP was 48 +/- 2 mmHg and PaCO2 43 +/- 1 mmHg
