Physical, behavioral, and psychological traits of gay men identifying as bears.

The Bear community exists as a subculture in reaction to the larger gay community. It rejects the normative idealized male beauty revered by mainstream gay men. While qualitative data document such self-identifiers as masculine-acting gay men who weigh more and have more body hair, there has to date been no quantitative analysis of this group's characteristics. In response, we conducted two large-scale studies of gay men identifying as Bears (n = 469) to survey their self-reported physical, behavioral, and psychological traits. Our studies indicated that Bears were more likely to be hairier, h

Effects of alcohol on ratings of emotional facial expressions in social phobics.

Social phobics have an increased risk of alcoholism. The mechanism behind this co-morbidity is not well understood. According to the appraisal-disruption model [Sayette, M. A. (1993). An appraisal-disruption model of alcohol's effects on stress responses in social drinkers. Psychological Bulletin, 114, 459-476], alcohol disrupts appraisal of threat stimuli unless the stimuli are easy to process. We investigated whether alcohol alters the judgment of emotional facial expressions in social phobics and controls. We also tested the judgment of emotionally ambiguous faces which should be more diffi

Pyoderma gangrenosum, subcorneal pustular dermatosis, IgA paraproteinaemia and IgG antiepithelial antibodies.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the defensive profile of primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) patients and to investigate the independent associations of psychological distress and personality variables with health-related quality of life (HRQOL). METHODS: In 40 primary SS patients we assessed psychological distress (SCL-90-R), ego defense mechanisms (Defense Style Questionnaire), hostility features (HDHQ) and HRQOL (WHOQOL-BREF). Fifty-six patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosous (SLE) and 80 healthy participants matched for age and sex served as controls. RESULTS: Primary SS patients presente

Continuing to acknowledge the power of dehumanizing environments: Comment on Haslam et al. (2019) and Le Texier (2019).

Decades after it was conducted, the Stanford Prison Experiment endures as a classic, dramatic demonstration of the potentially destructive psychological dynamics that can be created when one group of people is given nearly total power over a group of derogated others in a powerful, dehumanizing environment such as prison. The authors of the study value the intellectually engaged alternative perspectives that continue to be used to discuss its unsettling results but reject those that are ad hominem, misleading, inaccurate, and unscientific. Pitfalls of the peer world: how children cope with common rejection experiences.

This study examines the reliability and validity of a newly developed self-report measure designed to assess children's coping strategies in response to everyday rejection experiences. The Survey for Coping with Rejection Experiences (SCORE) was administered to 225 children and factor analysis of responses resulted in the conceptually meaningful subscales of active, aggressive, denial, and ruminative coping. A subset of 95 children also completed a battery of self- (depression, social anxiety), parent- (internalizing and externalizing problems), and peer- (social preference, aggression, withdr

Immigration detention centers as torturing environments: Ethical reckonings, radical refusals, and implications for a psychology of resistance.

This paper examines psychologists' ethical dilemmas in immigration detention centers. Using critical psychology, border, and detention scholarship, it highlights psychologists' historical complicity in state violence, from the U.S. Enhanced Interrogation Program to current border regimes. We argue that the structural conditions of migrant detention, characterized by profound dehumanization and harm, make ethical psychological practice in these torturing environments impossible. We analyzed the APA Ethics Code guidance, including reforms addressing past abuses and revisions focusing on human ri

Interpersonal cognitive distortions as mediators of the relationship between psychological distress and nomophobia in adolescents: a cross-sectional mediation analysis.

The increasing reliance on smartphones for emotional relief and social connectivity has contributed to the rise of nomophobia. The present study examined interpersonal cognitive distortions (ICDs) as mediators of the relationship between psychological distress and nomophobia in adolescents using a cross-sectional mediation design. A sample of 500 adolescents completed standardized measures assessing psychological distress (DASS-21), nomophobia (NMP-Q), and interpersonal cognitive distortions. To examine the hypothesized mechanisms through which psychological distress influences nomophobia, a p

Christ Siemens Touraine syndrome: A rare case report.

Christ-Siemens-Touraine (CST) is a rare hereditary disorder of X-linked recessive trait, characterized by abnormal development of two or more structures or tissues of ectodermal origin. The common clinical findings include hypodontia, hypohydrosis, hypotrichosis, and onychodysplasia. Although hypodontia is common, anodontia is a rare feature. Most of the patients are suffering from social rejection and consequent psychological trauma because of the facial dysmorphism and absence of multiple teeth. Oral rehabilitation is of prime importance for such patients. This article presents a case in a 5

Nursing Care After Kidney Transplant: Case Report.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Kidney transplant is the leading treatment method for patients with recent renal failure in terms of quality of life, cost, and survival. After transplant, rejection, infection, cardiovascular diseases, malignancies, immunosuppressive therapy failure, and psychologic problems may occur. Posttransplant nursing care is as important as pretransplant nursing care in terms of enhancing quality of life, preventing complications, and providing necessary changes to treatment. In this report, we presented ways to increase quality of care after transplant and outlined standardized nursing care to reduce

Social and psychological functioning of the ageing male homosexual.

The stereotype of the older male homosexual is one of disengagement from the homosexual world, loneliness, rejection, depression and unhappiness. This typical picture of the ageing homosexual is not supported by the findings from 478 homosexual men in Australia with diverse backgrounds. There are no age differences in psychological well-being and involvement in the gay community. The older homosexual does believe he has less control for his sexual orientation and attempts to hide his homosexuality more than his younger counterparts. These latter findings appear to be generational differences.

Psychosocial aspects of patients with Niemann-Pick disease, type B.

Health-care providers have only begun to understand the medical aspects of Niemann-Pick disease type B (NPDB), a relatively rare disease. Even less information is known about the psychological effects of living with NPDB. Patients with NPDB and their families face numerous psychological stressors including extensive medical testing, uncertainty of diagnosis, living and coping with a chronic illness, and grief and bereavement surrounding this progressively debilitating, and, ultimately, fatal disease. We used a qualitative case study approach to explore the human experiences of NPDB patients an

Brain structure and function and social exclusion reactivity in the Cyberball game.

Social exclusion or rejection is a universal stressor, and strong responses to rejection have been related to mental health issues. Previous studies linked rejection to concurrent brain activity in, amongst others, the insula or cingulo-operculum, areas related to pain processing. To date however, studies have only studied to the state of the brain during rejection, and not rejection in relation more stable brain characteristics. Identifying which brain areas are different among those that respond more to rejection could help us understand more of the biological underpinnings of rejection sens

Anger suppression after imagined rejection among individuals with social anxiety.

Individuals experiencing high levels of social anxiety report frequent and intense anger. Yet, little is known about how they manage this emotion. Despite general tendencies towards anger suppression, subsets of individuals with social anxiety regulate anger through outward expression. In this study, we investigated rejection as an antecedent to anger, examined how and when individuals with high social anxiety suppress anger, and evaluated experiential avoidance (EA) as a moderator of the relationship between social anxiety and anger suppression. 170 undergraduate students described their resp

Adult disclosure of sexual abuse: a primary cause of psychological distress?

There is evidence for a high incidence of childhood sexual abuse among adult psychiatric populations and some practitioners have noted a worsening of psychiatric symptomatology around the time of disclosure. Disclosure of abuse can result in hostile and rejecting responses from significant others in the victim's social support network. This paper surveys research evidence relating to the disclosure of abuse, and it is argued that for some adults, the disclosure of sexual abuse may be a primary cause of psychological distress, resulting in the dissolution of social support systems and increasin

Factors associated with emerging adult self-disclosure and discussion of physical and psychological chronic health conditions.

The current study investigated the disclosure decision-making processes of emerging adults with physical and psychological chronic health conditions (CHCs). Emerging adults (N = 460, Mage = 21.90) with one or more CHCs completed the Illness Identity Questionnaire, the Satisfaction With Life Scale, and open-ended questions via online survey. Half of all participants reported regularly discussing their CHCs, regardless of condition type (i.e. physical vs psychological). Regular discussion of CHCs was associated with higher satisfaction with life, greater acceptance and enrichment illness identit
