From consultation to choice: gynecologic cancer patients' perspectives on shared decision making in clinical practice - findings from a cross-sectional observational qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision making (SDM) is a cornerstone of patient-centered care in oncology, yet its implementation remains inconsistent across clinical contexts. Particularly in gynecologic oncology, where treatment choices often carry profound implications for identity, fertility and quality of life, understanding how patients engage in SDM is crucial. Patient autonomy, understood as the capacity and right to participate meaningfully in medical decisions, is central to this process, yet remains complex and context-dependent. OBJECTIVE: This study explores how women with gynecologic cancer

What have I missed again: A qualitative study exploring parents of children with cancer's experiences of fear of missing out.

This qualitative study aimed to explore the experience of fear of missing out (FoMO) among parents of children with cancer during the caregiving period, and to examine the manifestations of FoMO, its triggering factors, and its underlying relationship with fundamental psychological needs. 14 parents hospitalized in the pediatric ward were purposively recruited. A descriptive phenomenological qualitative study was conducted using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. Guided by the Self-Determination Theory, 3 main themes-obstacles to autonomous participation, deficits in competence, and ins

Trusting the Algorithm or Trusting the Nurse? Critical Care Nurses' Experiences of Automation Bias and Professional Autonomy in AI-Assisted Early Warning.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence-assisted early warning systems (AI-EWS) are increasingly integrated into critical care, yet little is known about how nurses experience automation bias and negotiate professional autonomy when algorithmic recommendations intersect with bedside judgement. AIM: To explore how critical care nurses experience automation bias and negotiate professional autonomy when using AI-EWS in intensive care. STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative Interpretive Description study was conducted across four hospitals in a regional health cluster in northern Saudi Arabia. Twenty-three pur

What are parents' perspectives on psychological empowerment in the MMR vaccination decision? A focus group study.

OBJECTIVES: Most developed countries do not have compulsory immunisation requirements, but instead issue recommendations. Although parents are expected to make an informed, autonomous (ie, empowered) decision regarding their children's vaccinations, there is no evidence about how parents' interpret this demand nor on the latitude of their decision-making. The goal of this study is to gain insights from parents residing in a low measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) uptake area on what constitutes feelings of empowerment in the decision they have to make on their child's MMR vaccination. DESIGN: A quali

Commemorative Naming, Intergenerational Legacy, and Continuing Bonds: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study of Being a Living Commemoration.

Commemorative naming-naming a child after a deceased family member-is a culturally rooted practice with profound emotional and relational implications. Although previous research has explored naming traditions from sociological and cultural angles, little attention has been given to the psychological experience of those who carry such names. This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of 14 Israeli adults named after deceased relatives, using interpretative phenomenological analysis to uncover personal and intergenerational meanings embedded in this practice. Participants were recrui

Beyond "Biomedical-Plus": Reclaiming the biopsychosocial model in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The biopsychosocial (BPS) model is widely endorsed as best practice in musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy. However, its implementation often remains constrained by biomedical assumptions, with psychosocial approaches primarily used to improve adherence, reduce symptoms, or restore function. As a result, contemporary BPS practice risks becoming "biomedical-plus" care rather than a genuinely integrated approach. MAIN MESSAGE: We argue that physiotherapists can move toward a more authentic application of the BPS model through three interconnected foundational conditions - the 3Cs: p

Assessors' decision-making regarding applicant eligibility for Track 2 medical assistance in dying in Canada: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In 2021, under Bill C-7, Canada revised its medical assistance in dying (MAiD) legislation to extend eligibility to individuals without a reasonably foreseeable natural death (Track 2). We sought to describe the clinical decision-making of assessors when determining applicant eligibility for MAiD Track 2. METHODS: We conducted semistructured virtual interviews of assessors practising in 4 Canadian provinces between April 2024 and March 2025. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, checked for accuracy, and thematically analyzed, following the principles of interpretive descri

Men's perspectives on termination of pregnancy in South Africa: A narrative review.

This narrative review synthesises evidence on South African men's perspectives, experiences, and involvement in termination of pregnancy (TOP), an area that remains underexplored in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) research and policy. A systematic search from PubMed, EBSCOHost, Web of Science, Sabinet, Scopus, and Google Scholar identified ten English-language studies published between 2013 and 2025. Data were analysed using thematic synthesis resulting in emergence of four themes: attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge regarding TOP; relational and socioeconomic contexts shaping m

"Why can't they put us to sleep if we are suffering?": La Nada and the desire for euthanasia among institutionalized older adults in Peru.

In this article, I examine how institutionalized older adults in Peru articulate suffering through the idiom of la nada-"nothingness"-and how this shapes desires for euthanasia. Moving from close ethnography of bodies in space and time to structural and ethical discourses on euthanasia, I argue that calls for euthanasia arise not only from biomedical suffering or terminal illness, but also from socially produced experiences of relational erosion, confinement, and moral invisibility. Residents' refrain-"no tengo nada"-signals not only material lack but the collapse of reciprocal ties, autonomy,

Adolescent eating autonomy survey development and exploratory factor analysis.

The development of autonomy over eating may impact nutrition-related disease risk, such as obesity and diabetes. Little is known about how eating autonomy develops throughout childhood and adolescence perhaps due to the absence of survey tools to measure adolescents eating autonomy behavioral engagement. This study developed and validated a comprehensive survey to evaluate adolescent eating autonomy using an iterative item development with content validity, expert review, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). A sample of United States adolescents (n = 355; 12-17 years) completed surveys, incl

'We're Not Really Into Helping, We're Into Being Useful': Service Provider Practices That Support Belonging Opportunities in the Lives of Adults Labelled With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Social inclusion focussed on belonging is increasingly emphasised by disability advocates and policymakers, yet belonging often remains absent for adults labelled with intellectual disabilities. People labelled with intellectual disabilities often rely on service providers to support their belonging. METHODS: In this critically informed ethnographic work, we draw on interviews with nine disability services leaders and prolonged participatory field explorations with five adults labelled with intellectual disabilities, their friends and support workers to explore how service provide

Family Health Conversations in HIV Nursing Care: A Qualitative Case Study on Supporting a Closeted Gay Filipino Man in the Philippines.

This article examines the use of Family Health Conversations (FamHC) in the care of a closeted gay Filipino man recently diagnosed with advanced HIV. In the Philippines, stigma rooted in religious and cultural conservatism presents significant barriers to care for men who have sex with men. Cultural values such as kapwa (shared identity), hiya (shame), and utang na loob (debt of gratitude) shape disclosure decisions and caregiving dynamics. FamHC, a relational nursing intervention, supports open dialogue, emotional validation, and collaborative caregiving. In this case, FamHC facilitated HIV d

The Treatment of Insomnia Secondary to Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Evaluating Escitalopram Use With Concomitant High-Resolution, Relational, Resonance-Based, Electroencephalic Mirroring (HIRREM).

Patient autonomy is important. However, what if a patient seeks out poorly studied treatment options? In this case report, we describe a patient with insomnia secondary to generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) who was prescribed escitalopram but additionally used High-Resolution, Relational, Resonance-Based, Electroencephalic Mirroring (HIRREM) therapy. HIRREM is an electroencephalogram (EEG)-based therapy that has been evaluated for use in the treatment of various conditions including insomnia. However, there has only been one randomized clinical trial supporting the use of HIRREM for insomnia,

Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy - Eating Disorders (MIT-ED) in the Case of an 18-Year-Old Girl With Avoidant and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders, Binge Eating Disorder and Obesity.

Personality disorders (PD) in adolescents are a significant risk factor in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (ED). Comorbid PD and ED can influence each other and significantly impact on the young person's well-being, worsening interpersonal relationships and social functioning. Patients with ED often use coping mechanisms related to food and body shape as maladaptive attempts to manage PD-related problems, like negative ideas about self and others. We describe the case of an 18-year-old adolescent presenting with binge eating disorder (BED), stage I obesity, and Avoidant and

Health Care Transition Experiences for Rural and Urban Autistic Adolescents and Young Adults: A Qualitative Analysis.

Health care transition (HCT) is underexplored among autistic adolescents and young adults (AYAs). We explored autistic AYAs' HCT experiences through virtual semi-structured interviews with 19 participants (mean age = 21.4 years; range = 15-25). Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and interpreted through self-determination theory (SDT). Participants described HCT as marked by increased expectations for independent health care management without commensurate preparation, relational continuity, or structural support. Findings were organized around SDT domains of competence, auton

Genital herpes counseling: Ethical considerations in confidentiality, disclosure, and psychosocial harm.

Genital herpes is a common, recurrent, chronic sexually transmitted infection that is frequently encountered in dermatologic practice, and in which the psychosocial burden often exceeds the physical manifestations, as many affected individuals are asymptomatic or experience only mild symptoms. Shame, fear of rejection, anger, depression, and anxiety surrounding disclosure can diminish quality of life more than the physical manifestations of the herpes infection. These concerns are compounded by practical threats to confidentiality, especially for adolescents whose explanation-of-benefits state

"You're an inmate just deal with it": experiences of formerly incarcerated individuals in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic posed uniquely dire challenges in New York City's jails. Rates of infection and fatality well exceeded those of the general population as the virus spread through congregate residences, heightening the city's status as an early epicenter. Using an inductive, grounded theory approach, we conduct 12 in-depth interviews with persons incarcerated in these jails early in the pandemic to elicit their perspectives on the carceral system's ability to deliver healthcare services and a safe residence. Participants describe concerns of overcrowding, insufficient protect

Savior siblings, parenting and the moral valorization of children.

Philosophy has long been concerned with 'moral status'. Discussions about the moral status of children, however, seem often to promote confusion rather than clarity. Using the creation of 'savior siblings' as an example, this paper provides a philosophical critique of the moral status of children and the moral relevance of parenting and the role that formative experience, regret and relational autonomy play in parental decisions. We suggest that parents make moral decisions that are guided by the moral significance they attach to children, to sick children and most importantly, to a specific s
