Exploring the Relationship Between Religion, Health, and Sociodemographic Factors in Brazil During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between religion, sociodemographic factors, and health in Alegre, Brazil, during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 694 individuals were interviewed, of whom 49.6% (n = 344) were Catholic, 36.5% (n = 253) Evangelical/Protestant, 7.5% (n = 52) non-religious, and 6.5% (n = 45) affiliated with other religions. Logistic regression revealed factors linked to Catholicism (older age, marriage, medical appointments) and Protestantism (older age, mixed race, outlying residence, marriage, alcohol abstinence). Living Arrangements and Subjective Well-Being of Elderly Chinese Tibetan People: The Mediating Role of Religion.

While previous studies have found that living arrangements and religiosity can influence the subjective well-being (SWB) of older adults, they have tended to investigate each of these aspects separately. Engaging with this gap, the current study examines the relationship between living arrangements, religious attendance, and the SWB of older adults, as well as the mediating effect of religious attendance on the relationship between the other two factors. A total of 875 older adults from 40 villages or communities in a Tibetan area in China (Gannan) were surveyed. An ordinary least square regre

Translation and Validation of the Arabic Duke University Religion Index Among Nursing Students in Saudi Arabia.

This study translated the Duke University Religion Index (DUREL) and psychometrically validated it for use in a Saudi Arabian nursing student population. A total of 145 undergraduate nursing students were recruited from a college of nursing, with participants having a mean age of 21.4 (± 2.0) years. Data collection drew on three instruments: a demographic questionnaire, the Arabic Scale of Intrinsic Religiosity (ASIR), and an Arabic-language adaptation of the DUREL. To ensure cultural appropriateness, all measures underwent a forward-backward translation procedure prior to administration. Reli

Exploring spirituality, religion and life philosophy among parents of children receiving palliative care: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the spiritual environment of parents of children receiving palliative care in Southern European countries, which are mostly characterized by secularization (or the abandonment of traditional religiosity) and an increase of cultural and religious diversities resulting in a much broader spectrum of spiritual and religious beliefs. This study aimed to explore the parents' own spirituality, religiosity, and philosophy of life in coping with the care of their child with palliative needs. METHODS: Qualitative interviews of 14 parents of children included in a p

Schizophrenia and psychosis in children and adolescents: An inspiring journey of scientific progress and the rich influences of history and religion.

The human brain begins in utero through neurulation, during which the neural plate develops into the neural tube. Through a complex journey of remarkable neurological intricacy, the central nervous system (CNS) forms with billions of neurons and trillions of connections. This extraordinary process is filled with dangers, including genetic abnormalities (from both maternal and paternal sources), maternal injuries such as infections, substance use, immunological conditions, and other factors. It is somewhere during this development of cerebral functions that a vulnerability to schizophrenia aris

"So, Do Not Fear": Religion and the prevalence, persistence, and severity of anxiety disorders among Black Americans.

BACKGROUND: There is a dearth of scholarship that explicates the effects of religious participation on anxiety disorders among Black Americans. A better understanding of the links between religious participation, a coping resource, and anxiety disorders among Black Americans remains essential, given Black Americans are less likely than their white counterparts to seek professional treatment for mental health problems, leading to greater unmet mental health needs. The aim of this study was to investigate whether religious participation is associated with the prevalence, persistence, and severit

"The plants have axé": investigating the use of plants in Afro-Brazilian religions of Santa Catarina Island.

BACKGROUND: Cultural and religious practices of African origin have decisively influenced traditional health practices in the Americas since the African diaspora. Plants are core elements in the religions of African origin. Compared with other parts of Brazil where the Afro-Brazilian presence is widely recognized, in Southern Brazil, these cultural practices are often socially invisible. Yet, there are several terreiros of three Afro-Brazilian religions: Candomblé, Umbanda, and Ritual deAlmas e Angola. We hypothesize that the importance of plants in Afro-Brazilian religions is linked not only

The role of religion in death attitudes: distinguishing between religious belief and style of processing religious contents.

Although it is widely assumed that religiosity plays an important role in individuals' attitudes about death, research to date has failed to reveal consistent associations between religiosity and death attitudes. Drawing from D. M. Wulff's (1991) multidimensional model of religiosity, the authors examined associations between religious attitudes as measured by the Post-Critical Belief Scale and death attitudes as assessed by the Death Attitude Profile--Revised. In total, 471 Dutch-speaking Belgian adults completed both questionnaires. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to asse

Religion and Breastfeeding Reconsidered: Exploring the Roles of Congregational and Community Support Along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Background/Objectives: Previous research has linked religious involvement to increased rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration, as well as improved lactation-related health outcomes. However, affiliation with certain faith traditions may also constrain breastfeeding practices due to misconceptions, modesty norms, religiously informed cultural beliefs, or other contextual factors. Given Mississippi's status as one of the most religious states in the United States, this study examines unique facets of the association between religion and breastfeeding, with special attention to the direct

Effects of Psilocybin on Religious and Spiritual Attitudes and Behaviors in Clergy from Various Major World Religions.

BACKGROUND: Although historical writings, anthropological accounts, and experimental studies document associations between psilocybin use and religion, no prospective experimental study has investigated how the effects of psilocybin are experienced and interpreted by religious clergy. This exploratory study evaluated the overall safety and the acute and enduring effects of psilocybin in clergy. METHODS: Participants were psychedelic-naïve clergy from various major world religions. A randomized, parallel group, waitlist control design was used to assess the effects of two supported psilocybin

Impact of religion and spirituality on the incidence of depression and mental health among young adults in the Czech Republic.

INTRODUCTION: The issue of the impact of religion and spirituality on mental health is a phenomenon which has recently become increasingly more accentuated. Despite the attention given to the topic, many questions still remain as to whether and how religion and spirituality affect a person's mental wellbeing. In the text below, we have focused on examining the relationship between religion and spirituality and mental health among young adults in the Czech Republic. Research also explored the idea that forgiveness can be viewed as a component of religion or spirituality. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Predicting Depression Symptoms in Families at Risk for Depression: Interrelations of Posterior EEG Alpha and Religion/Spirituality.

BACKGROUND: Posterior EEG alpha has been identified as a putative biomarker of clinical outcomes in major depression (MDD). Separately, personal importance of religion and spirituality (R/S) has been shown to provide protective benefits for individuals at high familial risk for MDD. This study directly explored the joint value of posterior alpha and R/S on predicting clinical health outcomes of depression. METHODS: Using a mixed-effects model approach, we obtained virtual estimates of R/S at age 21 using longitudinal data collected at 5 timepoints spanning 25 years. Current source density and

Temporal dynamics of religion as a determinant of HIV infection in East Zimbabwe: a serial cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Religion is an important underlying determinant of HIV spread in sub-Saharan Africa. However, little is known about how religion influences changes in HIV prevalence and associated sexual behaviours over time. OBJECTIVES: To compare changes in HIV prevalence between major religious groups in eastern Zimbabwe during a period of substantial HIV risk reduction (1998-2005) and to investigate whether variations observed can be explained by differences in behaviour change. METHODS: We analysed serial cross-sectional data from two rounds of a longitudinal population survey in eastern Zi

Between culture and religion: explanatory models of mental health conditions amongst Muslims in Cape Town, South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health remains highly stigmatized across many cultural and religious contexts, including Muslim communities in South Africa (SA), where Muslim mental health is under-researched. With Islam being one of the fastest-growing religions globally, alongside increasing global stressors affecting Muslim populations, there has been a rise in demand for mental healthcare. Recent literature highlights the importance of culturally relevant care, particularly through understanding Muslims' explanatory models of mental health conditions to ensure responsive and appropriate services.
