Importance of Social Hierarchy in Morphometry, and Socio-Sexual and Reproductive Behaviors in Dorper Sheep in Northern Mexico.

One of the most important aspects of animal production is the reproductive behavior, where a widely used strategy in small ruminants is the "male effect". However, the response to this effect can vary depending on several factors, including the social rank (SR) of both sexes. The objective of this study was to evaluate how SR influences morphometric and socio-sexual variables in Dorper sheep in Northern Mexico. Through behavioral tests, 33 rams and 59 ewes were divided into two groups taking into account their SR. Rams included high SR (HSR; n = 14) and low SR (LSR; n = 19), while ewes include

From metabolism to reproduction: The emerging roles of adipokines in neuroendocrine regulation, gonadal function, and sexual behavior.

Adipokines are proteins synthesized and secreted by several tissues, predominantly adipose tissue, which regulate multiple physiological functions. Historically, they have been mainly associated with regulating energy homeostasis, including glucose metabolism and body weight control. However, accumulating evidence over the past decade indicates that their actions extend far beyond metabolic processes. Adipokines are now recognized as pleiotropic hormonal mediators exerting systemic effects on various organs, including the central nervous system, where they modulate neuroendocrine circuits esse

Preconception Health Behavioral Patterns and Predictors in Chinese Reproductive-Aged Men: A Latent Profile Analysis.

Preconception health behaviors significantly influence pregnancy outcomes, yet patterns of these behaviors and their determinants have received limited attention, particularly among men. Understanding behavioral profiles is essential for developing targeted interventions to improve paternal reproductive health. We conducted a cross-sectional study examining over 20 guideline-recommended preconception health behaviors among 952 Chinese men. Latent profile analysis was utilized to identify different behavioral profiles. Multinomial logistic regressions assessed associations of profile membership

Reproduction of the Mechanical Behavior of Ligament and Tendon for Artificial Joint Using Bioinspired 3D Braided Fibers.

The level of joint laxity, which is an indicator of accurate diagnosis for musculoskeletal conditions is manually determined by a physician. Studying joint laxity via artificial joints is an efficient and economical way to improve patient experience and joint proficiency. However, most of study focus on the joint geometry but are inadequate with regard to the tailored mechanical properties of soft tissues. On the basis of collagen fibril deformation, this study proposes bioinspired 3D fibers braided from polyethene multifilament for the reproduction of the controlled nonlinear behavior of liga

Synthetic progestin etonogestrel negatively affects mating behavior and reproduction in Endler's guppies (Poecilia wingei).

High rates of progestins consumption in the form of active ingredients in women's oral contraceptives and other hormonal preparations may lead to their increased concentrations in aquatic environments and subsequent harmful effect on fish reproduction. The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of etonogestrel, a third-generation synthetic progestin, on the reproductive behavior, fertility, gonads histology, and secondary sexual characteristics of male and female Endler's guppies (Poecilia wingei). Fish were subjected for 34 days to two concentrations of etonogestrel, includin

Developmental Exposure to Ethinylestradiol Affects Reproductive Physiology, the GnRH Neuroendocrine Network and Behaviors in Female Mouse.

During development, environmental estrogens are able to induce an estrogen mimetic action that may interfere with endocrine and neuroendocrine systems. The present study investigated the effects on the reproductive function in female mice following developmental exposure to pharmaceutical ethinylestradiol (EE2), the most widespread and potent synthetic steroid present in aquatic environments. EE2 was administrated in drinking water at environmentally relevant (ENVIR) or pharmacological (PHARMACO) doses [0.1 and 1 μg/kg (body weight)/day respectively], from embryonic day 10 until postnatal day

Survival of reproductive behaviors in estrogen receptor beta gene-deficient (betaERKO) male and female mice.

Previously, it was shown that the lack of a functional estrogen receptor (ER) alpha gene (ERalpha) greatly affects reproduction-related behaviors in both female and male mice. However, widespread expression of a novel second ER gene, ERbeta, demanded that we examine the possible participation of ERbeta in regulation of these behaviors. In dramatic contrast to our results with ERalpha knockout (alphaERKO) males, betaERKO males performed at least as well as wild-type controls in sexual behavior tests. Moreover, not only did betaERKO males exhibit normal male-typical aggressive behavior, includin

Causal associations between female reproductive behaviors and psychiatric disorders: a lifecourse Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: The timings of reproductive life events have been examined to be associated with various psychiatric disorders. However, studies have not considered the causal pathways from reproductive behaviors to different psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to investigate the nature of the relationships between five reproductive behaviors and twelve psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Firstly, we calculated genetic correlations between reproductive factors and psychiatric disorders. Then two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was conducted to estimate the causal associations among five repro

Mating behavior of Pseudococcus calceolariae and Pseudococcus longispinus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae): are asexual reproduction and hybridization possible?

The study of insect reproduction is important from both basic and applied perspectives, particularly in mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), because of the diversity of reproduction modes and also because they are important agricultural pests. Sex pheromone control strategies are currently being developed for many species. Pseudococcus calceolariae (Maskell) and Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni Tozzetti) are closely related species that often coexist in the same host plant. In this study, mating behavior, the possible occurrence of asexual reproduction, and hybridization between them were

The Vaginal Microbiota and Behavioral Factors Associated With Genital Candida albicans Detection in Reproductive-Age Women.

BACKGROUND: Vulvovaginal candidiasis is commonly diagnosed and has been associated in prospective studies with the acquisition of HIV. Little data is available on how the composition of the vaginal microbiota, and other risk factors, are associated with the molecular detection of Candida albicans-a common cause of vulvovaginal candidiasis. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, self-collected vaginal swabs were obtained from 394 nonpregnant, reproductive-age women. C. albicans was detected using polymerase chain reaction targeting C. albicans ITS1/2 region. Vaginal microbiota was characterized

Alterations of secondary sex characteristics, reproductive histology and behaviors by norgestrel in the western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis).

Synthetic hormones in wastewater effluents released into the aquatic environments may interfere with the normal endocrine systems of fish in receiving streams. Norgestrel (NGT) is a synthetic progestin widely used in oral contraceptives and frequently detected in wastewater effluents. In this study, adult female mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were exposed to three environmentally relevant concentrations of norgestrel (NGT) (i.e., 3.6, 35.8, and 368.0 ng L-1) for 42 d, fin morphology, histology of the ovary, and reproductive behaviors were evaluated. The results showed that NGT at all three co

Multiple levels of social influence on adolescent sexual and reproductive health decision-making and behaviors in Ghana.

Little is known about the multilevel social determinants of adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) that shape the use of family planning (FP) among young women in Africa. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured, qualitative interviews with 63 women aged 15-24 years in Accra and Kumasi, Ghana. We used purposive, stratified sampling to recruit women from community-based sites. Interviews were conducted in English or local languages, recorded, and transcribed verbatim. Grounded theory-guided thematic analysis identified salient themes. Three primary levels of influence emerged as shaping

Effects of pesticides and toxic substances on behavioral and morphological reproductive development: endocrine versus nonendocrine mechanisms.

Exposure to toxic substances or pesticides during critical perinatal developmental periods can alter reproductive and central nervous system (CNS) function in a manner that does not compromise the growth and viability of the fetus but causes functional alterations that become apparent later in life. While some "CNS/behavioral teratogens" are mutagenic or alter cell division, other chemicals produce alterations of CNS development via endocrine-mediated mechanisms. The following discussion will focus on studies conducted primarily in our laboratory that describe how pesticides and toxic substanc

Acute alcohol exposure induces reproductive behavior defects, subfertility, brain transcriptomic changes of parental zebrafish and malformation in their offspring.

Alcohol is a prevalent addictive substance and the consequences of alcohol abuse pose a significant public health concern. Despite its prevalence and pervasiveness in the modern world, the underlying mechanisms mediating alcohol's deleterious effects on vertebrate reproductive behaviors remain poorly understood due to its complex pharmacology. Using adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model, we investigated the effects of 40-minute acute alcohol exposure (0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% vol/vol) on reproductive behaviors, fecundity, offspring development, and brain transcriptomes. Results show that acute a

Analysis of reproductive behavior in male pigeons in the White Mirthys and Egyptian Baladi breeds injected with testosterone propionate.

BACKGROUND: In pigeons, reproductive success is driven primarily by male courtship and copulatory behavior, both of which require threshold levels of circulating testosterone. This study investigated the effects of exogenous testosterone propionate (TP) injection on serum testosterone levels, aggressive behaviors, sexual displays, nest defense, parental care, reproductive cycles, and squab mortality in two pigeon breeds (Columba livia): White Mirthys and Egyptian Baladi. METHODS: A total of 27 adult pairs of White Mirthys pigeons and 27 adult pairs of Egyptian Baladi pigeons were randomly ass

Chronic exposure to low concentration of metamifop induces reproductive endocrine disruption and courtship behavior disorders in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Metamifop, an aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicide, is considered a threat to non-target organisms due to its widespread use and potential toxicity. However, there remains a significant gap in data regarding reproductive endpoints following exposure to metamifop at environmentally relevant concentrations. In this study, metamifop showed a moderate ability to bioconcentrate in zebrafish. Exposure to metamifop at environmental concentrations resulted in reduced egg production, suppression of courtship behavior, adverse effects on gonadal development and offspring development. The balance of testos
