Friends without benefits: Extensive cytotype sympatry and polyploid persistence in an African geophyte.

PREMISE: Polyploidy is a major factor in plant adaptation and speciation. Multiple mechanisms contribute to autopolyploid frequency within populations, but uncertainties remain regarding mechanisms that facilitate polyploid establishment and persistence. Here we aimed to document and predict cytotype distributions of Oxalis obliquifolia Steud. ex A. Rich. across Gauteng, South Africa, and test for evidence of possible mechanisms, including morphological, phenological, and reproductive traits, that may potentially facilitate polyploid persistence. METHODS: Over 320 O. obliquifolia plants from

The combined effect of isolation and Fasciola hepatica infection on the life history traits of Fossaria cubensis.

Life history traits of Fossaria cubensis were compared between isolated and paired snails after infection with three miracidia of Fasciola hepatica. Four experimental groups were tested: isolated-unexposed, paired-unexposed, isolated-infected, and paired-infected. A repeated-measures ANOVA showed statistically significant interactions among isolation, infection, and age effects for shell size, number of egg masses per snail, number of eggs per snail, and number of viable eggs per snail. Isolated-unexposed snails exhibited the higher values of these variables and those of survival and finite an

More than half a century of evolutionary studies in Rhodnius prolixus Stål, 1859 (Hemiptera, Triatominae): revisiting and discussing old and new data on intra- and interspecific reproductive barriers.

Rhodnius represents a paraphyletic group, being R. prolixus one of the most important domestic vectors of the Chagas disease. Several phenotypic identification problems, as well as divergences between classical and molecular taxonomy, have been reported. Furthermore, phylogenetic and phylogenomic studies demonstrated possible introgression events between R. prolixus and R. robustus. Based on the above, we revisited all the literature on hybridization involving R. prolixus and performed interspecific crosses between R. prolixus and other species of the R. prolixus group (R. nasutus, R. neivai,

Second-chance speciation in the Clouded Apollo butterfly.

Contact zones, where genetic lineages meet, provide a unique opportunity to study speciation and reveal how reproductive barriers emerge.1,2,3 However, species ranges are dynamic, contact zones may be ephemeral,4,5 and reinforcement-selection against hybrids-is an elusive phenomenon.6,7,8 We use an integrative approach-genomic, chemical, and morphological data coupled with ecological and demographic modeling-to evaluate lineage limits, reconstruct contact history, and infer reproductive isolation strength and mechanisms in the protected Clouded Apollo butterfly (Parnassius mnemosyne) in Europe

Disentangling the components of triploid block and its fitness consequences in natural diploid-tetraploid contact zones of Arabidopsis arenosa.

Hybrid seed inviability (HSI) is an important mechanism of reproductive isolation and speciation. HSI varies in strength among populations of diploid species but it remains to be tested whether similar processes affect natural variation in HSI within ploidy-variable species (triploid block). Here we used extensive endosperm, seed and F1 -hybrid phenotyping to explore HSI variation within a diploid-autotetraploid species. By leveraging 12 population pairs from three ploidy contact zones, we tested for the effect of interploidy crossing direction (parent of origin), ploidy divergence and spatial

Evaluation of a 20year old porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) modified live vaccine (Ingelvac(®) PRRS MLV) against two recent type 2 PRRS virus isolates in South Korea.

Type 2 porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus (PRRSV) was first isolated in Korea in 1994. The commercial PRRS modified live vaccine (Ingelvac(®) PRRS MLV, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc., St. Joseph, Missouri, USA) based on type 2 PRRSV, was first licensed for use in 3- to 18-week-old pigs in Korea in 1996. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of this 20year old commercial PRRS modified live vaccine (MLV) against two recent PRRSV isolates. Two genetically distant type 2 PRRSV strains (SNUVR150004 for lineage 1 and SNUVR150324 for lineage 5),

No pre-zygotic isolation mechanisms between Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma bovis parasites: From mating interactions to differential gene expression.

Species usually develop reproductive isolation mechanisms allowing them to avoid interbreeding. These preventive barriers can act before reproduction, "pre-zygotic barriers", or after reproduction, "post-zygotic barriers". Pre-zygotic barriers prevent unfavourable mating, while post-zygotic barriers determine the viability and selective success of the hybrid offspring. Hybridization in parasites and the underlying reproductive isolation mechanisms maintaining their genetic integrity have been overlooked. Using an integrated approach this work aims to quantify the relative importance of pre-zyg

Sexual isolation promotes divergence between parapatric lake and stream stickleback.

Speciation can be initiated by adaptive divergence between populations in ecologically different habitats, but how sexually based reproductive barriers contribute to this process is less well understood. We here test for sexual isolation between ecotypes of threespine stickleback fish residing in adjacent lake and stream habitats in the Lake Constance basin, Central Europe. Mating trials exposing females to pairings of territorial lake and stream males in outdoor mesocosms allowing for natural reproductive behaviour reveal that mating occurs preferentially between partners of the same ecotype.

Host-plant adaptation as a driver of incipient speciation in the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda).

BACKGROUND: Divergent selection on host-plants is one of the main evolutionary forces driving ecological speciation in phytophagous insects. The ecological speciation might be challenging in the presence of gene flow and assortative mating because the direction of divergence is not necessarily the same between ecological selection (through host-plant adaptation) and assortative mating. The fall armyworm (FAW), a major lepidopteran pest species, is composed of two sympatric strains, corn and rice strains, named after two of their preferred host-plants. These two strains have been hypothesized t

Comparative Characterization of the External Genitalia and Reproductive Tubular Organs of Three Species of the Genus Saimiri Voigt, 1831 (Primates: Cebidae).

Morphological information on the reproductive system allows the understanding of ecological and behavioural aspects of different species as well as supports the development of conservational strategies. Unfortunately, for many species, not enough relevant and precise information is available. In the present study, we describe for the first time the macroscopic and histological aspects of female genital organs and external female genitalia of Saimiri macrodon, Saimiri cassiquiarensis and Saimiri vanzolinii. We perform a comparison between these three peripatric species and investigate the possi

Digest: Chromosomal architecture of behavioral isolation in marine isopods.

How do reproductive barriers persist when diverging species come back into contact? Ribardière et al. (2026) investigated this question in 2 marine isopods, Jaera albifrons and Jaera praehirsuta, whose males court females using divergent specialized setae. By combining population genomics and controlled crosses, the authors show that genomic regions resisting interspecific gene flow are concentrated on sex chromosomes and rearranged chromosomes-regions of low recombination that harbor the genetic bases of divergent male courtship traits.

Two transects reveal remarkable variation in gene flow on opposite ends of a European toad hybrid zone.

Speciation entails a reduction in gene flow between lineages. The rates at which genomic regions become isolated varies across space and time. Barrier markers are linked to putative genes involved in (processes of) reproductive isolation, and, when observed over two transects, indicate species-wide processes. In contrast, transect-specific putative barrier markers suggest local processes. We studied two widely separated transects along the 900 km hybrid zone between Bufo bufo and B. spinosus, in northern and southern France, for ~1200 RADseq markers. We used genomic and geographic cline analys

Sharp decline in male fertility in F2 hybrids of the female-heterogametic silk moth Bombyx.

Sexual selection drives rapid evolution of morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits, especially in males, and it may also drive the rapid evolution of hybrid male sterility. Indeed, the faster male theory of speciation was once viewed as a major cause of Haldane's rule in male-heterogametic XY taxa, but is increasingly being replaced by the genetic conflict hypothesis partly because it cannot explain the faster evolution of hybrid female sterility in female-heterogametic ZW taxa. The theory nonetheless predicts that there should be more genes for hybrid male sterility than for hybri

Allogamy-Autogamy Switch Enhance Assortative Mating in the Allotetraploid Centaurea seridis L. Coexisting with the Diploid Centaurea aspera L. and Triggers the Asymmetrical Formation of Triploid Hybrids.

Hybridization between tetraploids and their related diploids is generally unsuccessful in Centaurea, hence natural formation of triploid hybrids is rare. In contrast, the diploid Centaurea aspera and the allotetraploid C. seridis coexist in several contact zones where a high frequency of triploid hybrids is found. We analyzed the floral biology of the three taxa to identify reproductive isolation mechanisms that allow their coexistence. Flowering phenology was recorded, and controlled pollinations within and between the three taxa were performed in the field. Ploidy level and germination of pr

Advancements in microfluidic and electrophoretic techniques for stallion sperm isolation.

Context Equine reproductive technologies are crucial for overcoming challenges in natural fertilisation, particularly in sub-fertile stallions and breeding programs focused on genetic conservation and performance enhancement. Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), such as artificial insemination (AI), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and in vitro fertilisation (IVF), improve fertility outcomes and enable breeding across geographical distances. Aims This review examines sperm isolation techniques used in ART, evaluating their efficacy, limitations, and potential to enhance reproduct

Population genomics of an exceptional hybridogenetic system of Pelophylax water frogs.

BACKGROUND: Hybridogenesis can represent the first stage towards hybrid speciation where the hybrid taxon eventually weans off its parental species. In hybridogenetic water frogs, the hybrid Pelophylax kl. esculentus (genomes RL) usually eliminates one genome from its germline and relies on its parental species P. lessonae (genomes LL) or P. ridibundus (genomes RR) to perpetuate in so-called L-E and R-E systems. But not exclusively: some all-hybrid populations (E-E system) bypass the need for their parental species and fulfill their sexual cycle via triploid hybrid frogs. Genetic surveys are e

Strongly asymmetric hybridization barriers shape the origin of a new polyploid species and its hybrid ancestor.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Hybridization between diploids and tetraploids can lead to new allopolyploid species, often via a triploid intermediate. Viable triploids are often produced asymmetrically, with greater success observed for "maternal-excess" crosses where the mother has a higher ploidy than the father. Here we investigated the evolutionary origins of Mimulus peregrinus, an allohexaploid recently derived from the triploid M. ×robertsii, to determine whether reproductive asymmetry has shaped the formation of this new species. METHODS: We used reciprocal crosses between the diploid (M. gutt

Extensive introgression at late stages of species formation: Insights from grasshopper hybrid zones.

The process of species formation is characterized by the accumulation of multiple reproductive barriers. The evolution of hybrid male sterility, or Haldane's rule, typically characterizes later stages of species formation, when reproductive isolation is strongest. Yet, understanding how quickly reproductive barriers evolve and their consequences for maintaining genetic boundaries between emerging species remains a challenging task because it requires studying taxa that hybridize in nature. Here, we address these questions using the meadow grasshopper Pseudochorthippus parallelus, where populat

Digest: Speciation involves both barriers and bridges in the tropical Andes.

Mountains are important centers of biodiversity and studies of speciation. In particular, the north-south linear orientation of the Andes allows examination of how geographic isolation, elevation, and latitude influence divergence in closely related species such as Myioborus warblers (Parulidae), the focal taxa of this study. Traditional models of Andean speciation have emphasized allopatric divergence due to geographic barriers, but thanks to the limited sampling of hybrid zones and lack of genome-wide datasets in tropical taxa, we may have underestimated of the role of gene flow in shaping p

Mating system and speciation I: Accumulation of genetic incompatibilities in allopatry.

Self-fertilisation is widespread among hermaphroditic species across the tree of life. Selfing has many consequences on the genetic diversity and the evolutionary dynamics of populations, which may in turn affect macroevolutionary processes such as speciation. On the one hand, because selfing increases genetic drift and reduces migration rate among populations, it may be expected to promote speciation. On the other hand, because selfing reduces the efficacy of selection, it may be expected to hamper ecological speciation. To better understand under which conditions and in which direction selfi
