Bacteriophage as an alternative to prevent reptile-associated Salmonella transmission.

Salmonellosis is a major global public health issue; its most common infection, gastroenteritis, accounts for approximately 90 million illnesses and 150,000 mortalities per year. Eradicating salmonellosis requires surveillance, prevention and treatment, entailing large expenditures. However, it is difficult to control Salmonella transmission because it occurs via multiple routes; exotic reptiles are a reservoir of Salmonella and comprise one such route. As the popularity of exotic pets and animal exhibition has increased, human encounters with reptiles have also increased. As a result, reptile

Reptile-associated Borrelia spp. In Amblyomma ticks, Thailand.

A total of 127 Amblyomma ticks (A. helvolum, A. varanense and A. geoemydae) were collected from reptiles: water monitors (Varanus salvator), Bengal monitors (Varanus bengalensis), Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus), yellow-spotted keelbacks (Xenochrophis flavipunctatus), keeled rat snakes (Ptyas carinata) and elongated tortoises (Indotestudo elongata) from nine provinces in Thailand. The presence of Borrelia spp. of the 16S rRNA, flaB, glpQ, groEL and gyrB genes was examined by conventional, semi-nested and nested PCR. Hox Genes in Reptile Development, Epigenetic Regulation, and Teratogenesis.

Reptiles are ancestral organisms presenting a variety of shapes, from the elongated vertebral column of the snake to the turtle dorsalized ribs or retractile neck. Body plans are specified by a conserved group of homeobox-containing genes (Hox genes), which encode transcription factors important in cell fate and vertebral architecture along the anteroposterior axis during embryonic development; thus, dysregulation of these genes may cause congenital malformations, from mild-sublethal to embryonic-lethal. The genetic pool, maternal transfer, and environmental conditions during egg incubation af

Effects of life-history requirements on the distribution of a threatened reptile.

Survival and reproduction are the two primary life-history traits essential for species' persistence; however, the environmental conditions that support each of these traits may not be the same. Despite this, reproductive requirements are seldom considered when estimating species' potential distributions. We sought to examine potentially limiting environmental factors influencing the distribution of an oviparous reptile of conservation concern with respect to the species' survival and reproduction and to assess the implications of the species' predicted climatic constraints on current conserva

Phylogenomics of nonavian reptiles and the structure of the ancestral amniote genome.

We report results of a megabase-scale phylogenomic analysis of the Reptilia, the sister group of mammals. Large-scale end-sequence scanning of genomic clones of a turtle, alligator, and lizard reveals diverse, mammal-like landscapes of retroelements and simple sequence repeats (SSRs) not found in the chicken. Several global genomic traits, including distinctive phylogenetic lineages of CR1-like long interspersed elements (LINEs) and a paucity of A-T rich SSRs, characterize turtles and archosaur genomes, whereas higher frequencies of tandem repeats and a lower global GC content reveal mammal-li

Midbrain projecting dorsal column nucleus neurons in a reptile.

The origin of midbrain projecting cells in the dorsal column nucleus (DCN) was investigated in reptiles, Caiman crocodilus, using a retrograde tracer. Labeled neurons were confined to a caudal-central portion of the DCN. Midbrain projecting DCN neurons had round, oval, or triangular soma and were small. While neurons that project to the spinal cord in Caiman are also located in the caudal half of the DCN, midbrain projecting cells are located more dorsally and are smaller than those whose axons terminate in the spinal cord. Taken together, these observations suggest that the DCN in Caiman is s

The biology of some intraerythrocytic parasites of fishes, amphibia and reptiles.

Fishes, amphibia and reptiles, the ectothermic vertebrates, are hosts for a variety of intraerythrocytic parasites including protists, prokaryotes, viruses and structures of uncertain status. These parasites may experience host temperature fluctuations, host reproductive strategies, population genetics, host habitat and migratory behaviour quite unlike those of endothermic hosts. Few blood infections of fishes, amphibia and reptiles have proven pathogenicity, in contrast to the many intraerythrocytic parasites of mammals and some birds which harm their hosts. Although not given the attention a

Molecular mechanisms of TSD in reptiles: a search for the magic bullet.

Significant progress has been made in understanding mechanisms of genetic sex determination. The ZFY gene encodes a zinc finger protein but is not the primary signal in sex determination. The SRY gene is the testis determining gene in man, mouse, rabbit, and probably marsupial mouse and wallaby. Temperature dependent sex determination probably involves a modification of development of the indifferent gonad due to differential expression of one or more specific DNA sequences whose behavior is controlled by some temperature sensitive process or to differential action of a gene product such as a

A second auditory area in the non-cortical telencephalon of a reptile.

Injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into a caudocentral portion of the non-cortical telencephalon of Caiman known as the dorsolateral area (dorsal ventricular ridge) resulted in retrogradely labeled neurons throughout the entire extent of the ipsilateral nucleus reuniens. HRP-positive cells were most numerous in nucleus reuniens pars diffusa with only sparse labeling of neurons in nucleus reuniens pars centralis. The results of the present experiment, when compared with those of a prior study that determined the telencephalic connections of nucleus reuniens pars centralis, suggested tha

Identification of diverse molecular forms of GnRH in reptile brain.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) molecular forms in the brains of three reptiles, Alligator mississippiensis (alligator), Calcides ocellatus tiligugu (skink) and Podarcis s. sicula (lizard) were characterized by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and radioimmunoassay with region-specific antisera, and by assessment of luteinizing (LH)-releasing activity in chicken dispersed pituitary cells. In alligator brain two GnRHs had identical properties to the two known forms of chicken hypothalamic GnRH (Gln8-GnRH and His5,Trp7,Tyr8-GnRH) in their elution on two reverse phase HPLC syste

Feeder insects differ in passage of coccidian oocysts in captive reptiles.

Coccidia (Apicomplexa) may have a devastating effect on captive reptiles, particularly chameleons and bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps). This study investigated the potential of three common feeder insects - the Argentine cockroach (Blaptica dubia), the banana cricket (Gryllus assimilis) and the superworm larva (Zophobas morio) - to act as passive vectors for coccidian oocysts, specifically Isospora amphiboluri and Choleoeimeria pogonae, common enteric parasites of captive bearded dragons. Faecal samples from experimentally infected bearded dragons were fed to the insects to assess the passag

Genetic diversity and host specificity of Blastocystis in reptiles, Eastern Thailand.

Blastocystis inhabits the digestive tracts of a diverse range of hosts. Transmission patterns, including host specificity, and the clinical and public health significance of Blastocystis in humans remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the distribution and genetic diversity of Blastocystis in herbivorous and carnivorous reptiles in Eastern Thailand. A total of 501 faecal samples were collected from 363 iguanas, 79 bearded dragons, 50 tortoises, and nine snakes in an animal breeding farm in Chonburi Province, Eastern Thailand. Detection and differentiation of Blastocystis was

Minimal zoonotic risk of cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis from frogs and reptiles.

The zoonotic potential of the protist parasites Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis in amphibians and reptiles raises public health concerns due to their growing popularity as pets. This review examines the prevalence and diversity of these parasites in wild and captive amphibians and reptiles to better understand the zoonotic risk. Research on Giardia in both groups is limited, and zoonotic forms of Cryptosporidium or Giardia have not been reported in amphibians. Host-adapted Cryptosporidium species dominate in reptiles, albeit some reptiles have been found to carry zoonotic (C. homin

Bites by Non-Native Reptiles in France: Species, Circumstances and Outcome.

We aimed to make an exhaustive assessment of circumstances of bites by exotic reptiles bred in France. A retrospective observational study was conducted in all the reported cases from 2000 to 2020 in French poison control centers (PCCs). Two hundred and eighteen cases of bites were recorded. The sex ratio (M/F) of the patients was 1.79 and the mean age of the patients was 29.0 ± 15.8 years. Twenty-two cases (10.1%) occurred during the deep night. One hundred and eighty-six bites (85.7%) occurred in a private context; however, there were more cases of high severity when it occurred in a profess

Cardiovascular effects of histamine in three widely diverse species of reptiles.

The cardiovascular system of vertebrates is regulated by a vast number of regulatory factors, including histamine. In pythons, histamine induces a strong tachycardia and dilates the systemic vasculature, which resembles the cardiovascular response to the elevated metabolic rate during digestion. In fact, there is an important role of increased histaminergic tone on the heart during the initial 24 h of digestion in pythons. Whilst the cardiovascular effects of histamine are well studied in pythons, little is known about the effects in other groups of reptiles. The histaminergic effects on the h
