Lateral bias for rotational behavior in tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella).

This research examined lateral bias for rotational behavior in tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). A symmetrical distribution of rotational bias was noted, with approximately equal numbers of subjects preferring to turn to the right and to the left. As a group, adults did not exhibit a lateral rotational bias. Immatures preferentially rotated to the left. Across subjects, the strength of rotational bias was positively related to the incidence of right-eyed looking. Rotational bias was not related to hand preference. The finding of analogous age-dependent patterns of rotational bias in capu

Sleep wake cycle and eating patterns undergo major changes during the adolescent period. Most of the new sleeping and eating patterns come within normal range, and therefore, it is important to differentiate them from pathologicaL eating and sleeping behavior Over the Last decades there has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of eating disorders (ED) in western society. The main syndromes are anorexia nervosa (AN), buLimia nervosa (BN) and non-specified eating disorders (ED-NOS). These disorders are linked with high morbidity and life-threatening complications. Sleep disturbances are a

Socioeconomic Inequalities in Oral Health Across Age Groups Among Single-Person Households in South Korea.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: This study examined oral health inequalities by socioeconomic position (SEP) among single-person households in South Korea, a growing but understudied demographic group. While prior research has highlighted oral health disparities in older adults, few have explored how SEP is associated with oral health across the life course in individuals living alone. METHODS: Using data from the 2023 Korea Community Health Survey, we identified 59,275 single-person households and assessed chewing discomfort and subjective oral health across three age groups (19-44, 45-64, ≥65 years)

Chapter 16: text mining for translational bioinformatics.

Text mining for translational bioinformatics is a new field with tremendous research potential. It is a subfield of biomedical natural language processing that concerns itself directly with the problem of relating basic biomedical research to clinical practice, and vice versa. Applications of text mining fall both into the category of T1 translational research-translating basic science results into new interventions-and T2 translational research, or translational research for public health. Potential use cases include better phenotyping of research subjects, and pharmacogenomic research. A var

Gabapentin maintenance decreases smoked cocaine-related subjective effects, but not self-administration by humans.

Data from research with laboratory animals indicate that cocaine self-administration can be reduced by lambda-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonists. Yet, the effectiveness of GABA agonists to decrease human cocaine self-administration has not been investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of gabapentin, a GABA agonist, on cocaine-related behaviors, including self-administration, in human research participants under controlled laboratory conditions. During this 48-day double-blind, crossover design study, the effects of gabapentin (0, 6

A Scientometric Evaluation of COVID-19 and Male Reproductive Research.

The COVID-19 pandemic due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus showed acute and prolonged effects on human health. In addition, over the past four years, there has been a tremendous surge in COVID-19-related scientific publications, as shown by bibliometric and scientometric studies. However, such analysis of the scientific literature is lacking in the area of male reproduction. The current scientometric study analyzes publication characteristics of articles related to male reproduction and COVID-19 infection. We used the Scopus database to analyze scientometric data (the number of publications, jour

Ethical issues in research involving victims of terror.

Although research after an episode of terror can provide important information to improve the health and well-being of present and future victims, there are unique ethical challenges that need to be addressed. Man-made disasters have profound effects on victims, rescue workers, and their families and on others in the community; this may impair their ability to provide voluntary and uncoerced decisions about research participation. Because such potential participants in research may be vulnerable and also subject to being overburdened with redundant research, they deserve special consideration.

Acute, subacute and long-term subjective effects of psilocybin in healthy humans: a pooled analysis of experimental studies.

Psilocybin and related hallucinogenic compounds are increasingly used in human research. However, due to limited information about potential subjective side effects, the controlled medical use of these compounds has remained controversial. We therefore analysed acute, short- and long-term subjective effects of psilocybin in healthy humans by pooling raw data from eight double-blind placebo-controlled experimental studies conducted between 1999 and 2008. The analysis included 110 healthy subjects who had received 1-4 oral doses of psilocybin (45-315 µg/kg body weight). Although psilocybin dose-

The immediate effects of sigmoid colon manipulation on pressure pain thresholds in the lumbar spine.

Visceral manual therapy is increasingly used by UK osteopaths and manual therapists, but there is a paucity of research investigating its underlying mechanisms, and in particular in relation to hypoalgesia. The aim of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of osteopathic visceral mobilisation on pressure pain thresholds. A single-blinded, randomised, within subjects, repeated measures design was conducted on 15 asymptomatic subjects. Pressure pain thresholds were measured at the L1 paraspinal musculature and 1st dorsal interossei before and after osteopathic visceral mobilisation

Nature exposure induces analgesic effects by acting on nociception-related neural processing.

Nature exposure has numerous health benefits and might reduce self-reported acute pain. Given the multi-faceted and subjective quality of pain and methodological limitations of prior research, it is unclear whether the evidence indicates genuine analgesic effects or results from domain-general effects and subjective reporting biases. This preregistered neuroimaging study investigates how nature modulates nociception-related and domain-general brain responses to acute pain. Healthy participants (N = 49) receiving electrical shocks report lower pain when exposed to virtual nature compared to mat

A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of auditory mismatch in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has noted functional and structural temporal lobe abnormalities in schizophrenia that relate to symptoms such as auditory hallucinations and thought disorder. The goal of the study was to determine whether the functional abnormalities are present in schizophrenia at early stages of auditory processing. METHOD: Functional magnetic resonance imaging activity was examined during the presentation of the mismatch stimuli, which are deviant tones embedded in a series of standard tones. The mismatch stimuli are used to elicit the mismatch negativity, an early auditory ev

Does central serotonergic function correlate inversely with aggression? A study using D-fenfluramine in healthy subjects.

Much research has investigated possible links between serotonergic function and aggression in violent or personality disordered populations, but few studies have looked at healthy subjects. In this study we administered 30 mg of the specific 5-HT releasing agent D-fenfluramine to 35 healthy subjects, along with questionnaire measures of hostility and aggression. Prolactin and cortisol responses were used as indices of central 5-HT function. In males, there were significant inverse correlations between 5-HT mediated cortisol responses and both the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory total score and

Regional cerebral blood flow changes in female to male gender identity disorder.

AIMS: Despite a range of research on gender identity disorder (GID), at present there is no scientific consensus on whether the etiology of GID is mental or physical. In particular recent advances in the technology of neuroimaging research have led to an increased understanding of the biological basis of various mental disorders. GID also should be evaluated from this perspective. The aim of the present study was therefore to do the first trial to examine the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in GID. METHODS: Persons considered biologically male fulfilling the GID criteria are termed male t

Reciprocal teacher-student transmissions: Linking teachers' emotions with students' emotions and relationship quality.

BACKGROUND: Reciprocal emotional transmissions between teachers and students have recently gained more research interest. Teacher-student relationship (TSR) quality is proposed to play an important role, but this transmission pathway lacks empirical evidence. Further, existing studies on this subject tend to focus on positive emotions, while associations of negative emotions are mostly observed within cross-sectional designs. AIMS: This study aims to investigate TSR quality as a transmission factor between teachers' and students' positive and negative emotions. We assume this to be a reciproc

Cannabis Expectancies for Sleep Modulate Discrepancies Between Subjective and Objective Sleep Outcomes: A Pilot Study.

While cannabis use is associated with subjective sleep improvements, studies employing objective sleep measures (e.g. actigraphy) demonstrate mixed relations. Based on social cognitive theory, it is possible that positive sleep-related cannabis expectancies (i.e. beliefs that cannabis will improve sleep) may modify self-reported sleep outcomes. This daily-level study examined agreement between subjective and objective sleep measures and evaluated whether positive sleep-related cannabis expectancies augmented discrepancies between subjective and objective sleep outcomes on cannabis use days. Autism and tuberous sclerosis complex: prevalence and clinical features.

This study employed a hierarchical assessment to detect the prevalence of autism in a clinic sample of individuals with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). After screening subjects with the Autism Behavior Checklist, subsequent evaluations with the Autism Diagnostic Interview, and direct clinical observation, the prevalence of autistic disorder in this sample of 20 subjects was conservatively estimated at 20%. Data suggest a possible association between both hypsarrythmia and TSC-related cardiac abnormalities with autism in this subgroup of TSC individuals. Implications of these findings for cli
