Post-COVID-19 disruption of the respiratory microbiome modulates Mycoplasma pneumoniae: a multi-center retrospective investigation study.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a notable resurgence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) in children, with a concerning rise in the severity of cases. Although changes in post-pandemic respiratory infection patterns have been documented, the reasons behind the increased severity of MPP, especially concerning shifts in the respiratory microbiota, are not well understood. This study aims to explore how pandemic-associated disruptions in respiratory microbiota contribute to MPP severity. Through analysis of multiple independent cohorts, we found that the depletion of protective r

Biomarker-Based Classification of Patients With Acute Respiratory Failure Into Inflammatory Subphenotypes: A Single-Center Exploratory Study.

OBJECTIVES: Hyper- and hypoinflammatory subphenotypes discovered in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome predict clinical outcomes and therapeutic responses. These subphenotypes may be important in broader critically ill patient populations with acute respiratory failure regardless of clinical diagnosis. We investigated subphenotyping with latent class analysis in an inclusive population of acute respiratory failure, derived a parsimonious model for subphenotypic predictions based on a small set of variables, and examined associations with clinical outcomes. DESIGN: Prospective,

What is the clinical relevance of respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis?: findings from a multi-center, prospective study.

Acute bronchiolitis (AB) is caused primarily by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Recent laboratory tools have implicated a variety of other pathogens; however, their clinical relevance has not been clearly defined. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the etiological agents of AB affect its course. A multicenter prospective study was performed in previously healthy children <24 months of age who presented with <4 days duration of AB. Subjects were divided into the following groups: "only RSV," "also RSV," "no RSV," and "no pathogen." The clinical severity score on admission as

Use of respiratory protection among responders at the World Trade Center site--New York City, September 2001.

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) on September 11,2001, created an occupational health and safety challenge for New York City (NYC) firefighters and rescue workers responding to the disaster. Immediate respiratory hazards included explosions, fire, falling debris, and dust clouds containing particulate matter comprised of pulverized building materials. Ongoing risks included lingering particulate matter in the air and intermittent combustion products from initial and persistent fires beneath the rubble pile. Because the nature and extent of exposures in disaster situations

Analysis of revertants from respiratory deficient mutants within the center N of cytochrome b in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Four modified cytochrome b's carrying mononucleotide substitutions affecting center N residues were analysed. The mutant carrying a G33D change does not incorporate heme into the apocytochrome b and fails to grow on non-fermentable carbon sources. Out of 85 genetically independent revertants derived from this mutant, 82 were true back-mutants restoring the wild type sequence (D33G). The remaining three replaced the aspartic acid by an alanine (D33A) indicating that small size residues are best tolerated at this position which is consistent with the perfect conservation of the G33 during evolut

Effectiveness of a structured protocol for the prevention of acute respiratory tract infections in daycare centers: A quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are a major cause of pediatric morbidity. Daycare centers (DCCs) are high-risk environments where close interpersonal contact facilitates rapid viral transmission. Effective and practical preventive strategies are therefore essential to reduce infection-related burden in these settings. AIM: To determine the incidence of ARTIs in DCCs following implementation of a structured protocol designed to mitigate respiratory virus transmission. METHODS: A cluster study was conducted in which two centers were centers to either intervention or cont
