Yet, there is a dearth of literature on the perceptions of health service providers (HSPs) regarding the care needs and possible management options to assist this growing group to remain at home.
OBJECTIVE: This paper investigated the support needs of people living alone with a terminal illness from a service provider perspective.
DESIGN: In depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine HSPs from community based services i

The characteristics of the caregiving experience were assessed using questionnaires. We compared the two groups according to age at onset of the disease using a multivariate test, Pillai's Trace test.

This was a descriptive study using a convenience sample to gain information regarding the impact of disability on the significant other. The study revealed that for, the most part, the subjects were coping well. The subjects had some difficulty with feeling overprotective of and overcommited to the disabled family member. Some felt that the disabled person took up too much of their time. The study showed (in a limited sense) that families are in need of social support and respite care. The subjects, due to their ages and marital status, had no need to seek new opportunities and the wives and h

INTRODUCTION: Most people with dementia (PwD) receive home care from their family members. Caring for PwD can be challenging; however, many family caregivers do not receive adequate training. The lack of support, knowledge, and skills in dementia care places significant physical and psychological stress on family caregivers.
OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study explored the challenges faced by family caregivers in providing care for PwD and identified the knowledge and skills they need for effective caregiving roles.
METHODS: In-depth interviews with 20 family caregivers of PwD were conducted

Hemodialysis patients in Japan are aging and thus more patients need support for attending hemodialysis facilities. This study aimed to clarify how dialysis patients utilize the services covered by Japan's public long-term care insurance (LTCI) system. This cross-sectional study was based on LTCI data of March 31, 2009, the latest available data provided by Niigata City, located on the northwest coast of Honshu. Among 30,349 LTCI users in Niigata City, there were 234 dialysis patients. To clarify the characteristics of the dialysis patients, we compared the utilization of LTCI services between

While healthcare systems have long attempted various strategies to care for unhoused patients, the rising complexity and severity of the homelessness crisis have underscored the urgent need for systemic approaches. Such efforts are critical as current federal policies push more responsibility for homelessness prevention and response to states and localities. Few studies have identified frameworks that healthcare systems can use to guide unified responses to the homelessness. In particular, support is needed to address how healthcare systems can operate across levels beyond individual care to i

The lack of stable housing can impair access and continuity of care for patients living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This study investigated the relationship between housing status assessed at multiple time points and several core HIV-related outcomes within the same group of HIV patients experiencing homelessness. Patients with consistently stable housing (CSH) during the year were compared to patients who lacked CSH (non-CSH group). The study outcomes included HIV viral load (VL), CD4 counts, and health care utilization. Multivariable and propensity weighted analyses were used to

BACKGROUND: Although research in this area remains sparse, raising a child with some genetic disorders has been shown to adversely impact maternal health and family quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate such impacts in families with a child with the CDKL5 disorder, a newly recognised genetic disorder causing severe neurodevelopmental impairments and refractory epilepsy.
METHODS: Data were sourced from the International CDKL5 Disorder Database to which 192 families with a child with a pathogenic CDKL5 mutation had provided data by January 2016. The Short Form 12 Health Surv

BACKGROUND: The importance of the issue of the economic burden of treatment and care for people with dementia is crucial in the developed countries. The European Union and other developed countries are trying to improve the course of aging population which leads to rising costs. Their uniform registration is also one of the objectives of the developed countries' strategic plans to fight dementia. BACKGROUND: Adults with intellectual disabilities (IDs) experience health inequalities and are more likely to live in deprived areas. The aim of this study was to determine whether the extent of deprivation of the area a person lives in affects their access to services, hence contributing to health inequalities.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study design was used. Interviews were conducted with all adults with IDs within a defined location (n = 1023), and their medical records were reviewed. The extent of area deprivation was defined by postcode, using Carstairs scores.
RESULTS: Area deprivation

Behavioral disorders are major manifestations of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. They are associated with caregiver distress, increase the likelihood of institutionalization and may be associated with more rapid cognitive decline. The first step of treatment strategy is an assessment of these disorders. Treatment of behavioral signs is an etiological treatment. Acute behavioral signs are often related to an unknown somatic disease. Chronic signs are often symptoms of the neurological dementia and can be reduced, especially by serotonergic agents and anticonvulsivants. The new

BACKGROUND: Studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted that confinement reduced access to services and increased caregivers' responsibilities and isolation.

METHODS: Participants completed an online questionnaire between October 2021 and February 2022, and again 6 months later, on the assistance provided, support received, language of services, and psychological well-being. Additionally, eight caregivers participated in a qualitative interview.

Background: Spinal cord injuries (SCI) are devastating conditions which often cause multiple permanent physical impairments and psychosocial complications. Discharge from hospital is often delayed and precious health resources are consumed. In Hong Kong SAR, China, the government welfare system and the public hospital system have worked together to address these problems through partnership with non-governmental organizations. An SCI transitional care facility (the Jockey Club New Page Inn, JCNPI) run by a non-governmental organization (SAHK), was inaugurated in 2008. Objectives: Review the lo

One thousand and sixty-six over 70s were interviewed in their own homes, 256 of the subjects had main carers who were non-statutory. These informal carers of the dependent elderly were then interviewed to examine the nature of the care that they provided, the assistance both formal and informal that they received and the consequences such caring had on their quality of life. The evidence from this study supports the view that the family is the main source of assistance to dependent elderly; usually the woman in the family. Very little assistance, either informal or formal, was received by the

BACKGROUND: Children with life-limiting conditions often have complex care needs, and their caregivers require expert clinical support after-hours and over weekends to support care at home.
OBJECTIVES: This quality improvement initiative examined usage patterns and impact on caregiving of the nurse-led 24-Hour Clinical Care Line initiated in 2018 by the Canuck Place Children's Hospice, which provides inpatient and community-based pediatric palliative care and respite for children with life-limiting conditions in British Columbia and the Yukon in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple-birth families (having twin, triplet, or larger births) face a disproportionately high-risk of child abuse resulting from chronic sleep deprivation and social isolation. However, community-based support often fails to address the fundamental need of such families for physiological rest. This policy note describes the Mie Hot Spot Model, an innovative intervention developed in Mie Prefecture, Japan, which repurposes maternity homes (boshi seikatsu shien shisetsu) into community respite hubs.
METHODS: By bringing underused residential capacity into use and providing profe
