BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease are a potential consequence of dopaminergic therapy. Impulse control problems might be revealed by intertemporal choice tasks which entail to forgo an immediately available reward in favor of a larger but later reward. The steepness of the discounting curve can be quantified by the parameter k.
METHODS: Participants (37 Parkinson patients [13 de novo, 24 medicated], 24 patients with restless legs syndrome, and 22 controls) were offered 54 choices between immediate smaller rewards and delayed larger and the k value was estimated from

OBJECTIVE: Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a sensorimotor disorder that can result in considerable sleep disruption. This narrative review provides an overview of RLS diagnosis and reports epidemiologic evidence for an association between RLS and mood disorders. Possible links between RLS, sleep disturbances, and mood disorders are considered, and theoretical pathophysiologic pathways are discussed. Finally, pharmacologic therapies for RLS are summarized.
DATA SOURCES: A PubMed search was performed using the search term restless legs syndrome in combinatio

BACKGROUND: No studies have examined the association between RLS and the sequelae of poliomyelitis (PM). We studied the frequency and severity of RLS in a group of consecutive patients with the sequelae of poliomyelitis (PM) and the effect of treatment with dopaminergic drugs.
METHODS: A diagnosis of RLS was made according to the criteria of the International RLS Study Group, and severity was assessed by the RLS rating scale. Information on sex, age, age at onset, site affected by PM, disease duration of PM, and history of post-polio syndrome (pPS) was obtained in a cohort of 52 PM patients.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multisystem disease with a complex immunologic pathophysiology. Likewise, sleep disorders can involve a complicated interplay between the neurologic pathways, immune system, and respiratory system. Recent studies have shown an elevated prevalence of sleep abnormalities in connective tissue disorders compared to the general population. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) may be present in up to 30% of RA patients. These findings may be related to cytokine release and other immunomodulatory responses. TNF- α levels relate to sleep physiology and anti-TNF- α therapy may im

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the topography of restless legs syndrome (RLS) sensations and to compare subgroups of patients based on RLS topography.
METHODS: Forty-four treated patients with primary RLS were interviewed and reported the localization of RLS sensations on body diagrams.
RESULTS: RLS sensations were felt deep inside the muscles of mainly the middle portions of the lower limbs in 86% of patients. Superposition of patients' drawings showed a predominant involvement of the upper calves (75%). RLS sensations were diffuse, affecting on average 21% of the body. They occurred bilaterally,

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological movement disorder that is often seen in multiple sclerosis patients. However, the association between RLS and multiple sclerosis (MS) is still unclear and RLS is not considered as one of the MS symptoms. This study was conducted to assess the frequency of RLS and its associated factors in patients with MS. This was a cross-sectional study conducted during January and April 2010. A total of 205 patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (164 females, 41 males, mean age 32.8 ± 8.9 years) were enrolled in the study and underwent a medical hist

BACKGROUND: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by abnormal leg sensations and an uncontrollable urge to move the lower extremities during rest periods. Evidence suggests that reflex tasks that involve sensory-motor integration may be altered in RLS patients. This led us to determine if RLS patients show alterations in a sensory-motor reflex conditioning task called differential eyeblink conditioning.
METHODS: RLS subjects were washed out of treatment medication for 7 days prior to testing. Subjects (20 RLS and 19 Control) received 120 discrimination conditioning trials consisting o

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is one of the most common neurological diseases. Even though there is a large progress in its diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment, it still remains recognised too rarely. It is elderly people who mostly suffer from restless legs syndrome, but it is established that the disease may begin in childhood. The aim of this study is to present the diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis in cases of this syndrome, in children. Correct diagnosis of restless legs syndrome is a starting point for epidemiological studies on the incidence of RLS in children.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and restless legs syndrome (RLS) are both associated with hypofunction of dopamine in the CNS. We therefore examined whether individuals who are obese have an increased risk of RLS in two ongoing US cohorts, the Nurses' Health Study II and the Health Professional Follow-up Study.
METHODS: We included 65,554 women and 23,119 men free of diabetes, arthritis, and pregnancy in the current analyses. Information on RLS was assessed using a set of standardized questions. Participants were considered to have RLS if they met four RLS diagnostic criteria recommended by the Internati

The case report describes a 39-year-old woman with restless legs syndrome (RLS) and trichotillomania (TTM). She was treated with venlafaxine and clonazepam with partial remission of RLS and no response for TTM. When aripiprazole was added to the clonazepam both RLS and TTM fully remitted. We suggest that aripiprazole might be worth investigating for treatment of these disorders.

Recent published evidence suggests that restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) are common condition in children and adolescents. It is likely that if left untreated, RLS and PLMD may lead to adverse cardiovascular and neurocognitive consequences. However, the diagnosis of RLS and PLMD in children is challenging, particularly because children are relatively unable to describe typical RLS symptoms. The International Restless Legs Study Group has recently published consensus criteria for the diagnosis of RLS and PLMD in children. In addition to clinical descriptio

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition characterized by discomfort at rest and urge to move focused on the legs. RLS may occur as an idiopathic, often hereditary condition (primary RLS), or in association with medical conditions (secondary RLS) including iron deficiency, uremia, and polyneuropathy. Current understanding of the pathophysiology of RLS points to the involvement of three interrelated components: dopaminergic dysfunction, impaired iron homeostasis, and genetic mechanisms. The diagnosis of RLS is made according to the consensus criteria by a National Institutes of Health panel:

Prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS), a clinically defined disorder, varies from 2.5 to 15% among populations. In the French adult population, prevalence is estimated to be 8.5%. RLS is often secondary to a variety of disorders. Neurological conditions usually associated with RLS are neuropathies and Parkinson's disease. There are few studies of its association with multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of this study was to estimate RLS prevalence in a population of French MS patients. During one month, 17 neurologists from the G-SEP group prospectively recruited 242 patients who fulfilled th

BACKGROUND: Far from being uniform, Huntington's disease (HD)'s phenotype encompasses a large variety of motor and non-motor symptoms which occur in various combinations in individual patients.
AIM: To describe an unusual association between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and HD.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We report a patient with an atypical presentation of genetically demonstrated HD, who developed typical RLS a few years prior to and during the course of HD. Common causes of RLS were excluded and the polysomnography confirmed frequent and severe periodic limb movements during sleep and while awak

Based on recent data about the association between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and migraine, we performed an observational study on the occurrence of RLS in patients affected by primary headaches. Two hundred headache patients (149 women and 51 men) and 120 (90 women and 30 men) sex-and age-matched control subjects were included. In the headache group, migraine without aura (MO) was the most represented headache type (n=114), followed by the "mixed" group (n=40) with MO, migraine with aura (MA) and frequent episodic tension-type headache (ETTH) in various combinations, and by ETTH alone (n=22

Restless legs syndrome is a common condition that results in difficulties falling and staying asleep and perception of poor sleep quality. We report a case of a 73-year-old woman with uncontrolled restless legs syndrome who spent most of the night standing and walking. As a result of her nighttime behaviors, she fell several times and sustained, on several separate occasions, fractures of both forearms, ribs, and nose. Iron replacement therapy and changing of her dopamine-agonist medications resulted in almost complete relief of symptoms. Physicians should be aware of the potential for injury

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of pramipexole in patients with moderate to severe restless legs syndrome (RLS) METHODS: The authors conducted a 12-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of fixed doses of pramipexole (0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 mg/day). Patients (N = 344) were up-titrated to their randomized dose over 3 weeks. The primary efficacy endpoints were patient ratings of symptom severity on the International RLS Study Group Rating Scale (IRLS) and clinician ratings of improvement on the Clinical Global Impressions-Improvement (CGI-I) scale. BACKGROUND: In 2003, following a workshop at the National Institutes of Health, the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) developed updated diagnostic criteria for restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease (RLS/WED). These criteria were integral to major advances in research, notably in epidemiology, biology, and treatment of RLS/WED. However, extensive review of accumulating literature based on the 2003 NIH/IRLSSG criteria led to efforts to improve the diagnostic criteria further.
METHODS: The clinical standards workshop, sponsored by the WED Foundation and IRLSSG in 20
