A Rare Case Report of Renal Hilar Teratoma Associated With a Well-Differentiated Neuroendocrine Tumor and High-Grade Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma.

Teratomas are rare germ cell neoplasms composed of elements derived from all three germ layers, which are most commonly encountered in childhood. Renal teratomas in adults are exceedingly uncommon, and involvement of the renal hilar region is exceptionally rare. We present a 70-year-old man with a renal hilar (retroperitoneal) mature teratoma containing a well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor coexisting with a high-grade upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma. Preoperative imaging revealed distinct lesions in the renal hilum and distal ureter. Histopathological examination demonstrated a

Tumor thrombus of the inferior vena cava secondary to malignant abdominal neoplasms: US and CT evaluation.

Nineteen patients with histologically proved tumor thrombi of the inferior vena cava (IVC) secondary to abdominal neoplasms were studied with the use of ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT). The primary neoplasms were renal cell carcinoma (13 cases), adrenal tumors (two cases), retroperitoneal tumors (two cases), and hepatic tumors (two cases). A positive diagnosis of tumor thrombus was achieved by both methods. The cranial extent of the tumor thrombus was better demonstrated by US studies, which showed echogenic endoluminal material within an enlarged IVC with a bulging anterior

Retroperitoneal seminoma presenting with inferior vena caval obstruction.

A retroperitoneal seminoma in the presence of clinically normal testes can present a considerable diagnostic problem and therapeutic dilemma. We report on a patient with low back pain and inferior vena caval obstruction in whom no primary neoplasm could be detected by surgical exploration of the testes.

Uterine angiomyolipoma presenting as a rapidly enlarging retroperitoneal mass in the early postpartum period.

Uterine angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are exceptionally rare benign mesenchymal tumors that can closely mimic malignant uterine or retroperitoneal neoplasms when large or highly vascular. We describe the case of a healthy 29-year-old postpartum woman who presented with acute abdominal pain three months after delivery and was found to have a rapidly enlarging 10-cm hypervascular mass arising from the right uterine cornua with extension into the retroperitoneum. The imaging appearance and interval growth were highly concerning for a retroperitoneal sarcoma. She underwent diagnostic laparoscopy, which w

Impact of retroperitoneal tumors on the digestive tract (Review).

Primary retroperitoneal tumors are a rare group of neoplasms that often prove to be a real therapeutic challenge. The clinical picture is in most cases nonspecific, being the result of nearby tissue and organ compression, displacement and/or invasion, and it usually includes a variety of deceiving signs and symptoms that may lead to diagnostic errors. During the course of the disease, up to half of the patients diagnosed with retroperitoneal tumors can develop gastrointestinal symptoms, the incidence of such symptoms significantly increasing with tumor size. Therefore, symptoms such as abdomin

Retroperitoneal cystic masses: CT, clinical, and pathologic findings and literature review.

Cystic lesions of the retroperitoneum can be classified as either neoplastic or nonneoplastic. Neoplastic lesions include cystic lymphangioma, mucinous cystadenoma, cystic teratoma, cystic mesothelioma, müllerian cyst, epidermoid cyst, tailgut cyst, bronchogenic cyst, cystic change in solid neoplasms, pseudomyxoma retroperitonei, and perianal mucinous carcinoma. Nonneoplastic lesions include pancreatic pseudocyst, nonpancreatic pseudocyst, lymphocele, urinoma, and hematoma. Because the clinical implications of and therapeutic strategies for retroperitoneal cystic masses vary depending on the c

[Giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma].

Liposarcoma is a malignant tumor that has an embryologic origin from mesodermal tissue depending on fatty tissue. Although liposarcoma is only 0.1% of all human neoplasms, it is the most common histology subtype of retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcomas. This tumor grows slowly. Diffuse abdominal pain is its most frequent symptom and abdominal mass is the most common sign. Aggressive surgical treatment is basic to get a complete resection and a local disease control. This objective is difficult because of the large tumor size it gets in the retroperitoneal location and the multiorgan involvement

Lipoplastic lymphadenopathy presenting as an ovarian mass: a case report.

Lipoplastic lymphadenopathy is a pathological condition wherein accumulations of intranodal fat result in lymph node enlargement and may mimic abdominal, pelvic, and retroperitoneal neoplasms, particularly lymphomas. The pathology appears to be different from lipomatosis in that benign, mature adipocytes and lipids are located within lymph nodes, rather than deposited in body cavities. The case of a 49-year-old woman presenting as an ovarian neoplasm is presented as an example of the pathology and its ability to masquerade as other neoplasms. The etiology of lipoplastic lymphadenopathy is uncl

Retroperitoneal robot-assisted resection of a lower posterior mediastinal benign schwannoma using a transdiaphragmatic approach: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic tumors are the most frequent neoplasms of the lower posterior mediastinum. Traditionally, lower posterior mediastinal tumors are excised by video-assisted thoracic surgery. However, the available robotic treatment for the lower posterior mediastinum tumors to date are rare. Herein, we report a case of a right lower posterior mediastinal tumors successfully treated with retroperitoneal robot-assisted surgery using a transdiaphragmatic approach. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 54-year-old male patient without any symptoms was admitted into our department with a right lower posterio

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma in a male patient.

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous neoplasms are extremely rare tumors. Less than sixty cases have been reported in international literature until date, with striking female predominance. We report a case of primary mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the retroperitoneum in a 51-year-old male presenting with nonspecific abdominal complaints. This case is being highlighted for its rare occurrence in a male patient.

Simultaneous (non-epidermoid) neoplasms involving the head and neck.

The phenomenon of multiple primary malignant neoplasms involving the head and neck is well documented. Epidermoid carcinomas constitute the majority of these neoplasms. Case reports are made of two patients with simultaneously occurring chronic reticuloendothelial malignancies and non-epidermoid tumors involving the head and neck. The first case is one of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and metastatic primary retroperitoneal extragonadal seminoma, while the second is one of lymphocytic lymphoma (LL) and a carotid body tumor (CBT). The head and neck manifestations of metastatic seminoma, CBT

Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the retroperitoneum.

A case of a primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of ovarian type found at laparotomy in the presence of two normal ovaries is described. Careful examination of the tumor showed no evidence of ovarian tissue in the wall. The appearance of this tumor could be traced from areas of benign mucinous cystadenoma, through a mucinous tumor of borderline malignancy to a highly malignant anaplastic tumor containing only occasional mucicarmine positive cells. In areas, the connective tissue of the neoplasm, resembled ovarian stroma in appearance. At autopsy, the retroperitoneum was free of

Duodenal Adenocarcinoma at the Ligament of Treitz: Management and Outcome.

Primary small bowel neoplasms at the ligament of Treitz are extremely rare and require advanced surgical technique for extirpation. The insidious onset of disease allows for a delayed presentation, often accompanied by moderate-size growth of the neoplasm, causing intestinal bleeding and bowel obstruction. The partial retroperitoneal location of these tumors pose a unique challenge for surgical resection. We present an unusual case of a primary small bowel adenocarcinoma at the Ligament of Treitz, requiring segmental resection of the fourth portion of the duodenum plus the proximal jejunum.

Unicentric Castleman's Disease Masquerading Pancreatic Neoplasm.

Castleman's disease is a rare nonclonal proliferative disorder of the lymph nodes with an unknown etiology. Common locations of Castleman's disease are mediastinum, neck, axilla, and abdomen. Castleman's disease of a peripancreatic location masquerading as pancreatic neoplasm is an even rarer entity. On search of published data, we came across about 17 cases published on peripancreatic Castleman's disease until now. Here we are reporting a case of retropancreatic Castleman's disease masquerading as retroperitoneal neoplasm in a 46-year-old male patient.

Hyaline vascular-type Castleman disease: a rare cause of a hypervascular retroperitoneal mass.

We present the cross-sectional imaging and angiographic findings of hyaline vascular-type Castleman disease located in the retroperitoneum. The diagnosis was made postoperatively. This entity can simulate a malignant neoplasm. The histologic subtypes and presentations of Castleman disease and the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal masses are discussed.

Single-port transumbilical laparoscopic excision of retroperitoneal schwannoma mimicking a nonfunctional endocrine tumor in the body of the pancreas: a case report.

Schwannomas are benign tumors that arise from neural sheath Schwann cells. Solitary benign schwannoma is generally located in the head and neck and is a rare neoplasm among the tumors of the retroperitoneal space. Reports of laparoscopic excision of retroperitoneal schwannomas have recently been on the increase. However, few cases of single-port laparoscopic excision of these tumors have been reported. Moreover, there are no reports of single-port excision of schwannomas attached to the body of pancreas and around the splenic vessels. This is the first report of a schwannoma lying adjacent to

[Benign retroperitoneal schwannoma: a case report and review of the literature].

Retroperitoneal schwannoma is a very rare benign tumour that accounts for only a small percentage of retroperitoneal tumours. The preoperative diagnosis is difficult and the only treatment is complete surgical excision. The authors report their experience with a case of a voluminous retroperitoneal mass in a 42-year- old male patient, incidentally discovered during a diagnostic search for a blunt abdominal trauma. Because of the unclear origin of this mass, the patient underwent periodic radiological and ultrasonographic examinations. Three years later, owing to a slight increase in this mass

[Metastatic tumors of the retroperitoneal space].

In 22 patients retroperitoneal nonorganic tumors, considered to be primary, proved to be metastatic. Prior to surgery the character of neoplasms was recognized only in 4 patients. Due to unwarranted efforts of "radical" removal of tumors 2 of 4 patients died. In 3 cases neoplasms were urgently removed due to internal hemorrhage and obstruction. In 7 cases a palliative effect of radiotherapy. 5-fluoruracil thiophosphamide employed prior to detection of the primary focus, was obtained. The latter was found following 3-12 months in the stomach (1), small intestine (1) and rectum (4), kidneys (4)

Management of a Primary Retroperitoneal Yolk Sac Tumor.

BACKGROUND Existing literature has detailed occurrences of retroperitoneal yolk sac tumors (YSTs) as the result of metastasis from a primary gonadal site. However, primary retroperitoneal YSTs are extremely rare, thus remaining a challenge to diagnose and treat. We present a complex case of a large primary retroperitoneal YST in a man treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical resection. CASE REPORT A 31-year-old man presented with a chief symptom of severe lower abdominal pain. Diagnostic imaging revealed a large, rapidly progressing neoplasm in the retroperitoneal region, ini

Current diagnosis and management of retroperitoneal sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal sarcomas are rare neoplasms that often present with multivisceral involvement. Treatment for these tumors requires careful decision making requiring a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. METHODS: We reviewed the scientific literature pertaining to the diagnosis and management of retroperitoneal sarcomas. We also identify recent developments in treatment and discuss future trends in the care of patients with this disease. RESULTS: Retroperitoneal tumors often present as large, locally advanced lesions. Evaluation of these tumors requires ca
