BACKGROUND: Restoring the ability to work after hand injuries is a central goal of rehabilitation. Digital therapy applications are increasingly finding their way into everyday clinical practice. However, data on the influence of such technologies on parameters relevant to everyday life, such as the duration of incapacity to work, is still lacking. In particular, it is unclear whether app-supported hand therapy can accelerate the return to work.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of a hand therapy app in addition to standard care on the duration of incapacity to wor

Striving to return to work is of great importance to many cancer survivors. The purpose of the study is to prospectively investigate the factors that hinder and facilitate return to work (RTW) at 3 and 12 months after the end of treatment in head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors and whether these factors influence the ability to continue working after treatment. Participants (n = 227) aged ≤ 65 years at diagnosis with HNC were included. Data were collected before the start of treatment and at 3 and 12 months after the end of treatment. The Rubin causal model was used for statistical analysis. W

Medical treatment of compensated work-related conditions has two objectives--improve injured workers' health status and allow safe and sustained return to work (RTW). Theoretically, the choice of treatment method should be based primarily on these objectives. Surgical treatment of work-related carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) provides an opportunity to evaluate whether this occurs. The traditional method of open release has been complemented by an endoscopic procedure, particularly useful in work-related cases due to the anticipated benefit of earlier RTW. The objective of this study was to invest

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID is associated with prolonged impairments in work ability and return-to-work (RTW). The heterogeneity and complexity of post-COVID symptoms present major obstacles to a sustainable RTW. This systematic review aims to identify facilitators and obstacles affecting work ability and RTW.
METHODS: Eligible studies examined factors affecting work ability or RTW in post-COVID patients. Systematic search of literature was performed up to March 2025 using MEDLINE, CENTRAL, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science. Study selection followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic

Background: Work-related injuries remain a considerable global burden; nevertheless, progress in occupational safety has been made in decreasing the time to return to work. This study aimed to assess the pooled incidence of Return to Work (RTW) among workers with occupational injuries and to identify the key factors influencing RTW outcomes. Methods: A systematic review was conducted by searching electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and Scopus) to include eligible cohorts. Meta-analysis was undertaken using R software 4.5.1 with random-effects models, and het

The magnitude of economic and social costs related to common mental disorders has a profound impact on the workplace. Returning to work following depression is, therefore, a major issue for all stakeholders involved (employee, employer, human resources director, union, physician, etc.). Considering their role in the organization, Human Resources Directors (HRD) and employers have a decisive impact on the return-to-work (RTW) process. Purpose This study aims to determine which RTW accommodations are implemented, following depression, by one of the central stakeholders: HRD and employers. Method

BACKGROUND: Return to work (RTW) is an important component of cancer survivorship. However, evidence on RTW after upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery remains limited.
METHODS: We performed a questionnaire-based observational study between August 2023 and August 2025. Patients who underwent surgery with curative intent for upper gastrointestinal cancer, attended postoperative outpatient follow-up visits, and had been employed at the time of cancer diagnosis were eligible for this analysis.
RESULTS: Among 410 patients who completed the questionnaire, 207 had been employed at the time of canc

PURPOSE: Traumatic injury has substantial effects on survivors' overall functioning, including at work. In low-income settings, trauma care and rehabilitation services are weak, which can complicate the recovery and return-to-work process of injury survivors. This study aimed to construct a substantive theory on the return to work (RTW) experiences of injury survivors, people who sustained traumatic physical injuries in Ethiopia.
METHODS: A qualitative constructivist grounded theory (CGT) study was conducted, using data collected through in-depth interviews with fourteen adult injury survivor

BACKGROUND: For working-age patients with colorectal cancer, returning to work is a key rehabilitation goal. This study examines the association between socio-economic position (SEP) and return-to-work (RTW), including competing outcomes (pension entry and death), following medical rehabilitation.
METHODS: German Pension Insurance data (2013-2022) were analysed, including 32,174 formerly employed patients (ICD-10 C18-C20) of working age undergoing oncological rehabilitation. Patients were categorised by SEP (education, occupational position, income). Logistic regression and restricted mean su

Objective Managers play an important role in supporting employees returning to work after long-term sick leave. However, little research has focused on the support practices that these managers use when dealing with employees returning to work after burnout. This exploratory study has two objectives. First, it outlines the variety of return to work (RTW) support practices implemented by managers. Second, it describes these managers' perceptions of burnout. We argue that these perceptions of burnout influence the type of support that they provide. Method A series of semi-structured interviews w

OBJECTIVE: In this cross-sectional analysis, we explored how return-to-work (RTW) experiences and postinjury pain are associated with opioid use after a workplace injury/illness.
METHODS: Workers with accepted lost-time claims, compensated by the workers' compensation board in Ontario, Canada were interviewed by telephone 18 months following a work-related physical injury/illness. Participants were asked about their past-year opioid use, current pain, RTW timing and workplace accommodations. Separate logistic regression analyses were conducted to estimate the association between two independe

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Return to work (RTW) after spinal surgery is a crucial postoperative outcome influencing patients' lives. Endoscopic spinal surgery (ESS) is an ultra-minimally invasive technique for the treatment of spinal pathology, and some ESS procedures have been shown to improve RTW dynamics following spinal surgery.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate RTW within ninety days following various lumbar ESS procedures in the United States (US) and compare differences in RTW between patient occupational activity levels and ESS procedural types.

BACKGROUND: Patients who undergo primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may return to work at variable times following surgery, the timeline for which is partly affected by the physical intensity of their occupation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction and limitations when returning to work following TKA.
METHODS: This retrospective review surveyed patients undergoing primary TKA between June 2011 and January 2022, with at least 1 year of follow up, regarding return to work. Of the 914 respondents, 507 (55.5 %) worked preoperatively and were stratified into high inte

Investigating how individual characteristics modify treatment effects can improve understanding, interpretation, and translation of trial findings. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to identify treatment effect modifiers of the MI-NAV trial, a 3 arm, parallel randomized controlled trial which compared motivational interviewing and stratified vocational advice intervention in addition to usual case management (UC), to UC alone. This study included (n = 514) participants with musculoskeletal disorders on sick leave for at least 50% of their contracted work hours for at least 7 consecuti

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that worldwide, between 30% and 50% of those who are infected with COVID-19 experience long COVID (LC) symptoms. These symptoms create challenges with return-to-work (RTW) in a high proportion of individuals with LC. To tailor rehabilitation programs to LC sequelae and help improve RTW outcomes, more research on LC rehabilitation program outcomes is needed.
OBJECTIVE: This study describes the characteristics and outcomes of workers who participated in an LC occupational rehabilitation program.
METHODS: A cohort study was conducted. Descriptive variables
