Gliosarcoma is a rare subtype of glioblastoma, isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wildtype. This biphasic tumor has two components. The first one is glial and usually represented by glioblastoma. The second is a sarcomatous component usually represented by nonspecific spindle cell sarcoma. Rarely, different glial tumors could represent the non-sarcomatous component, including oligodendroglioma and ependymoma. There were only two reported cases in the literature with glioneuronal components (both were anaplastic ganglioglioma) as the non-sarcomatous component. This work reports a gliosarcoma in the

BACKGROUND: Gynecologic neoplasms are rare in children and represent only less than 5% of all childhood tumors. Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the female genital tract of children accounts for only 3.5% of the cases.
CASE: A 16-year-old adolescent presented with a proliferating growth and foul smelling discharge from her vagina, which, on biopsy was diagnosed as RMS. She received chemotherapy and radiation to the primary site. She is alive in remission at 8 years, and with normal menstrual function.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: RMS of the vagina is a rare, but highly curable tumor in adolescent girls.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma. The already documented data regarding RMS state that it is more prevalent in males than females and also that its occurrence is more in Caucasians than Asians. The current incidence of RMS is 4.5 cases/million, and thus, it is a very rare cancer. The undifferentiated type is the most aggressive one with a rare presentation in the retroperitoneum. Overall, this case emphasizes that consideration should be given to wide range of diagnosis and that frozen section is the gold standard for a confirmatory diagnosis, as the first biopsy showed ben

OBJECTIVES: To report a case of primary rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the pineal gland in an adult, as well as review the literature on this rare entity.
METHODS: The case is compared with previous reports of similar entities, with emphasis on this patient's characteristics and clinical presentation, investigations, and management.
RESULTS: Diagnosis of primary RMS of the pineal gland was based on the presence of strap cells and multinucleated myotube-like structures, as well as tumor cell expression of skeletal muscle markers consistent with myogenic differentiation. Multimodality treatment was

Broad ligament tumors are uncommon. Sarcomas rarely arise from the broad ligament, leiomyosarcomas being the most common. Rhabdomyosarcomas of the broad ligament are very rare. To the best of our knowledge, no case of an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the broad ligament has been reported in literature.

Renal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare pediatric tumor. Pancake kidneys are unusual anatomic anomalies resulting when both upper and lower poles of the embryonic kidney become fused. We report on a 4-year-old boy who was discovered to have a stage 4, group IV renal embryonal RMS arising from a pancake kidney with metastases to the lung, pelvis, and bone marrow. Treatment included multimodal therapy, consisting of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, complete surgical resection, and adjuvant chemotherapy. He remains in clinical remission 7 months after resection.

A 10-year-old female English pointer was diagnosed with an ovarian tumour with abdominal metastases. Ultrasonography revealed several nodules of 1-5 cm diameter within the abdominal cavity. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the nodules suggested a malignant mesenchymal tumour. On necropsy examination the right ovary and its capsule were enlarged and there were white-red, friable nodular masses distributed over the surface of the pancreas, liver, omentum, mesentery and serosae of the small and large intestines. Microscopical evaluation revealed neoplastic cells with a high degree of pleomorphi

We report the unusual transformation of a lipomyelocele to a rhabdomyosarcoma in a 3-year-old boy. A lipomyelocele is not considered pre-malignant, but the possibility of developing such a tumor may represent another reason for close neurological follow-up in patients with spinal dysraphism.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of salivary glands is a rare malignant neoplasm, presenting a striated muscular differentiation. It is typically observed in children, adolescents, and young adults but can sometimes be diagnosed in older people.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 57 year-old man presenting with a primary alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the parotid gland. The patient was treated by surgery and radiotherapy.
DISCUSSION: According to literature data, alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the parotid gland is exceptionally described after 40 years of age. In that case it has the wo

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most frequent malignant soft tissue tumor in pediatric patients; however, the vulvar location and congenital appearance are exceptional. We present the case of a newborn girl with botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma of the vulva, treated with chemotherapy, conservative surgery and autologous transplant. Botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma is a variation of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma that typically grows in mucosa-lined hollow organs, from where it can spread to the body surface. The treatment of botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma in the genito-urinary area is based on polychemotherapy, and it can b

Although orbital cellulitis is the most common cause of acute-onset proptosis with inflammatory signs in a child, the clinician should always be alert to the possibility of rhabdomyosarcoma. We describe an unusual presentation of acute-onset nonaxial proptosis of the left orbit without sinus disease or systemic toxicity in a 6-year-old boy. Our clinical differential diagnosis included orbital cellulitis, metastatic disease, capillary haemangioma, lymphangioma with cyst, ruptured dermoid cyst, and orbital rhabdomyosarcoma. Only after orbital biopsy and subsequent microbiologic confirmation were

Pure rhabdomyosarcoma arising in the uterus is a rare tumor currently classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a uterine sarcoma. The records of eight women with uterine rhabdomyosarcomas were retrieved from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). The eight women presented with vaginal bleeding, abdominal enlargement, or acute abdomen. The mean age of the patients was 64.6 years (range 35-87). Macroscopically, 4 tumors were polypoid endometrial masses, 2 were intramyometrial, 1 was located in the cervix, and 1 was a 15-cm mass involving the endometrium and myom

BACKGROUND: Orbital metastasis from rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare disorder with a poor prognosis for long-term survival. Only one other detailed account of this disorder has appeared in the ophthalmic literature.
METHODS: The authors report the clinical features of four patients with presumed orbital metastasis from alveolar and embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.
RESULTS: The most common ophthalmic manifestations of orbital metastasis from rhabdomyosarcoma in these patients included proptosis, reduced visual acuity, orbital pain, and motility disorders. Computed tomography documented orbital masses in

The case of a 22-month-old boy with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the lung is presented. Brain metastasis and recurrence of the right pulmonary hilum and parietal pleura developed 6, 11, and 24 months (respectively) after tumor resection. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy were effective. Neuron-specific enolase was very helpful in detecting metastasis and disease recurrence. Primary pulmonary rhabdomyosarcoma can be divided into two groups: tumor in the normal lung, and tumor in cystic lesions of the lung.

Pure rhabdomyosarcomas of the female genital tract most commonly occur in infancy or childhood as sarcoma botryoides (embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma) and involve the vagina and cervix. Such tumors rarely occur in adults. A pure rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus that arose in a postmenopausal patient is described. The pertinent literature is discussed.

A case of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma is presented. An 18-year-old male was admitted with the complaint of giant scrotal swelling and abdominal fullness on September 5, 1986. Left radical orchiectomy was performed with the pathologic diagnosis of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. The tumor was paratesticular in location and had invaded a spermatic cord. Radiological examination showed a gross metastatic mass in retroperitoneal lymph nodes, supraclavicular lymph nodes and Douglas pouch. The patient received induction chemotherapy containing vincristine, actinomycin-D, cyclophosphamide, bleomycin,
