BACKGROUND: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas (ERMS) of the uterine cervix and corpus are rare pediatric tumors usually associated with a late age of onset and frequent somatic DICER1 mutation. It may also develop in the context of a familial predisposition such as DICER1 syndrome requiring specific medical care for children and young adults at risk for a broad range of tumors.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case of a prepubescent 9-year-old girl who was presented to our department for metrorrhagias due to a vaginal cervical mass, initially classified as a müllerian endocervical polyp on negative myo

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare tumour in the middle ear and mastoid cavity in children and the diagnosis is difficult. Repeated histological examination may be essential to confirm the diagnosis. We report a 6 year old boy with a left aural polyp, otorrhoea and facial nerve palsy who was initially thought to have otitis media and mastoiditis. He had polypectomy and the tissue taken for histopathology suggested an inflammatory condition. Subsequently he had mastoidectomy. Tissue taken during mastoidectomy was however reported as rhabdomyosarcoma. The child developed a cerebral abscess and eventuall

OBJECTIVE: We report a case of cervical rhabdomyosarcoma in an adult and review of literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 44-year-old, premenopausal, white woman, complained of vaginal bleeding for 2 months. The gynecological examination showed a cervical polyp protruding from the vagina. The polyp was partially removed by polypectomy. Pathological examination was diagnostic for embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma-botryoid type-of the cervix. Radical class II hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy, and pelvic lymphadenectomy were performed. Adjuvant multidrug chemotherapy (vincristin

Rhabdomyosarcoma presents special diagnostic problems when it involves the uterine cervix in young children because tumor cells may lack marked atypia and may blend with the normal, immature, condensed, cellular stroma, rendering diagnosis difficult. Myogenic makers are a valuable ancillary technique for establishing a diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. However, desmin positivity has been reported in cervical stromal cells, which can confound diagnosis. To determine whether immunohistochemical markers of skeletal muscle differentiation are helpful in the diagnosis of uterine botryoid rhabdomyosarc

Pure rhabdomyosarcomas of the female genital tract mostly occur in infancy and childhood, in the form of sarcoma botryoides (a variant of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma), with vagina and cervix as typically involved sites. Such tumors rarely occur in the uterine corpus and cervix of adults. We would like to report a pure embryonal rhab-domyosarcoma of the uterine corpus that arose in a 31-year-old, gravida 1, para 1, female patient with widespread bony metastasis, and which was originally mistaken for metastatic small cell carcinoma to bone marrow.

Childhood cancer survivors are at risk for subsequent neoplasms. We describe the clinical presentation and genetic testing of a 29-year-old woman diagnosed with a pheochromocytoma 22 years post-treatment for childhood embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder. Genetic testing for cancer predisposition revealed a pathogenic variant in BRCA2 and a variant of uncertain significance in MSH2. Pathogenic variants associated with deafness were also identified in GJB2. This article reports a novel subsequent neoplasm following childhood embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, and discusses the potential contribut

The ultrastructural study of three malignant orbital tumors, only one of which was correctly diagnosed as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma upon histologic examination, is reported. In all 3 cases electron microscopic investigation revealed the presence of rhabdomyoblasts. These are easily recognizable in one case in which the diagnosis was made on the basis of the optical microscopic study. The other two cases needed further tests to evince rhabdomyoblasts. The importance of an ultrastructural study for a histogenetic characterization of this kind of tumor is emphasized. As far as embryonal rhabdomy

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a malignant soft tissue sarcoma arising from primitive mesenchymal cells. It is rare in childhood and adolescence but is one of the more common pediatric soft tissue sarcomas. Hence, clinical presentation and prompt treatment strategies of such cases should be known for better management.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old girl presented with a one-and-a-half-year history of progressive vaginal mass protrusion and serosanguinous discharge. Abdominal examination revealed a large suprapubic mass extending above the umbilicus. MRI revealed a le

Cervical rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is an uncommon malignant tumor. Its presentation in patients with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a genetic condition with marked ultraviolet (UV) sensitivity and skin cancer risk, is very rare. We report the case of a teenage girl with XP diagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix. A 17-year-old girl with a longstanding history of XP presented with pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, dysuria, and constipation. Clinical examination revealed a 7 × 6 cm exophytic cervical mass. Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of embryonal rh

BACKGROUND: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) is a highly aggressive form of soft-tissue sarcoma that predominantly affects children. Due to limited benefits and resistance to therapy, there is an unmet need to explore alternative therapeutic strategies.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we present a rare case of pediatric ERMS located on the right side of the maxillary gingiva. A composite reference guide integrating clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic findings was used for a definitive diagnosis. Targeted next-generation sequencing of tumor biopsy was performed to identify genetic

Jaundice in older children can occur when any obstruction is found within the bile ducts, either from bile stones, parasites, choledochal cysts and rarely, secondary to tumors. We present a previously well, 10-year-old Filipino boy with three-week history of progressive jaundice and tea-colored urine, and was initially assessed to have biliary ascariasis. Ultrasound showed a heterogeneous focus spanning the gallbladder neck and confirmed on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography as an exophytic mass at the ampulla of Vater. Tumor biopsy and immunohistochemical staining confirmed the di

BACKGROUND: Noonan syndrome (NS) due to the RRAS2 gene, the pathogenic variant is an extremely rare RASopathies. Our objective was to identify the potential site of RRAS2, combined with the literature review, to find the correlation between clinical phenotype and genotype. De novo missense mutations affect different aspects of the RRAS2 function, leading to hyperactivation of the RAS-MAPK signaling cascade.
METHODS: Conventional G-banding was used to analyze the chromosome karyotype of the patient. Copy number variation sequencing (CNV-seq) was used to detect the chromosomal gene microstructu

BACKGROUND: DICER1 syndrome is an inherited tumor predisposition syndrome. A germline mutation in DICER1 increases the risk for a spectrum of rare tumors. We describe a case of somatic DICER1 mutation in a pubertal girl, who is affected by different tumors of the DICER1 syndrome, including embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) of the cervix and thyroid adenoma.
CASE: A 16-year-old girl with history of papillary thyroid adenoma presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding and an exophytic cervical mass on examination. Histopathologic examination confirmed cervical ERMS. By using Sanger sequencing of t

This report presents a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (eRMS) located in the left maxillary sinus and invading the orbital cavity in a ten-year-old male patient who was treated at a referral hospital. The images provided from the computed tomography showed a heterogeneous mass with soft-tissue density, occupying part of the left half of the face inside the maxillary sinus, and infiltrating and destroying the bone structure of the maxillary sinus, left orbit, ethmoidal cells, nasal cavity, and sphenoid sinus. An analysis of the histological sections revealed an undifferentiated malignant neo

Bilateral cystic nephroma is an extremely rare benign renal neoplasm. Here we present a case of bilateral cystic nephroma in a four month old boy who subsequently developed embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the urethra. Both tumors were successfully treated. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of this association which could be related to Dicer-1 mutation.

Although rhabdomyosarcoma is the most frequent soft tissue tumor in children, there are extremely few reports of this tumor arising from the urachus. The authors describe another case in a 6-year-old female associated with constipation and a painless suprapubic mass. The specimen had the pathological criteria used to define urachal sarcoma (cytological, histological, and immunohistochemical findings) and urachal remnants were not observed. After complete resection of the primary tumor the patient was treated with chemotherapy (ifosfamide, vincristine, and dactinomycin) and remains alive at 4 y

Cervical embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma(ERMS) is a rare malignancy. To date, no cases of ERMS diagnosed by cervical cytology have been reported. In this study, we report a case of cervical ERMS identified by a liquid-based cytology test and cell blocks in a 46-year-old postmenopausal woman. We describe the cytological features of ERMS, with the aim of helping cytopathologists recognize this rare cervical tumor.
