Non-Newtonian blood rheology significantly alters hemodynamic predictions during cardiac looping: a computational study.

INTRODUCTION: Hemodynamic forces play a key role in early cardiac morphogenesis, yet many computational studies assume Newtonian blood behavior. Here, we evaluate the impact of non-Newtonian shear-thinning rheology on flow patterns, pressure distributions, and wall shear stress (WSS) during cardiac looping using idealized three-dimensional models of the embryonic heart tube. METHODS: Five geometries representing progressive looping stages, from a linear tube to an S-shaped configuration with ventricular ballooning, were analyzed under pulsatile flow using both Newtonian and power-law viscosit

Self-adaptive and configurable transfer printing of flexible electronics via rheology of liquid foam.

Flexible electronics (FEs) have the potential to endow objects with the virtues and functionalities of electronics. The key is transferring manufactured FEs from original rigid substrates and printing onto targets. However, existing transfer printing accommodates limited circumstances due to immutable mechanical properties of either solid or liquid stamps. Here, a self-adaptive, configurable transfer printing method is developed based on the unique rheology of liquid foam that enables integration of ultrathin FEs onto arbitrary surfaces conformally, three-dimensionally and non-invasively. The

Thermal Rheology and Fibrous Structure of High-Moisture Meat Analogs with Hemp Seed Cake.

The utilization of protein-rich agricultural by-products offers a sustainable strategy for developing plant-based meat analogs. This study investigated the effects of cold-pressed hemp seed cake (HSC) incorporation at levels of 0-20% on the pasting, thermal-rheological, textural, and structural properties of high-moisture meat analogs produced by extrusion. Increasing HSC incorporation significantly reduced peak viscosity, indicating altered starch-protein-fiber interactions within the blends. During temperature-sweep measurements, all formulations exhibited elastic-dominant behavior, with the

Injectable nanocellulose-based polylipoic acid hydrogels with tunable rheology, strong adhesion and multifunctional bioactivity.

The development of injectable hydrogels that combine strong tissue adhesion, suitable rheological properties and effective antibacterial/antioxidant activities remains a major challenge for biomedical applications. Herein, we design nanocellulose-based dynamic hydrogels by integrating dopamine-grafted cellulose nanofibers (DCNF) with polylipoic acid (PTA). The DCNF not only constructs a percolated nanofibrous network that precisely regulates viscosity, shear-thinning behavior and structural recovery after injection, but also stabilizes PTA by quenching terminal sulfur radicals, thereby suppres

One ink for two processes: exploiting rheology to accelerate 3D-printed chewable tablet manufacturing.

Personalised medicines are increasingly required in paediatric and hospital pharmacy practice, where licensed preparations may not be suitable. Semi-solid extrusion three-dimensional printing (SSE-3DP) enables the production of these patient-specific dosage forms, especially in chewable tablets. However, its layer-by-layer fabrication may limit manufacturing speed and routine implementation in time-pressured hospital pharmacy workflows. This study manufactured theophylline-loaded chewable gummy tablets via two routes: conventional SSE-3DP and template-based ink deposition (TID), using an ident

3D printing with 2D colloids: designing rheology protocols to predict 'printability' of soft-materials.

Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques and so-called 2D materials have undergone an explosive growth in the past decade. The former opens multiple possibilities in the manufacturing of multifunctional complex structures, and the latter on a wide range of applications from energy to water purification. Extrusion-based 3D printing, also known as Direct Ink Writing (DIW), robocasting, and often simply 3D printing, provides a unique approach to introduce advanced and high-added-value materials with limited availability into lab-scale manufacturing. On the other hand, 2D colloids of graphene oxide

Hormones, metabolism and body composition as major determinants of blood rheology: potential pathophysiological meaning.

The rheological properties of plasma and blood cells are markedly influenced by the surrounding milieu: physicochemical factors, metabolism and hormones. Acid/base status, osmolality, lipid status and plasma protein pattern are well known to exert a major influence. The oxidative stress induced by increased free radicals production decreases red cell deformability. Among circulating substances, the divalent cations magnesium and zinc improve red cell deformability probably via calcium antagonistic effects. Some metabolites like lactate or ketone bodies decrease red cell deformability, although

Desmopressin (d-DAVP) effects on platelet rheology and von Willebrand factor activities in uremia.

Bleeding times, von Willebrand activities, and platelet retentions were examined before and following d-DAVP in 13 uremic patients. Shortening of the bleeding time from 16.6 +/- 2.2 (SEM) to 6.8 +/- 0.7 min was seen in six patients. However, bleeding times remained greater than or equal to 20 min in the remaining seven individuals. The only baseline parameter that correlated with response to d-DAVP was the amount of blood loss (mg/min) during the bleeding time test. Responders had normal blood loss values averaging 6.2 +/- 1.5 mg/min. By contrast, these values were elevated in 6/7 of the non-r

Microenvironment Rheology Modulates the Effect of the Anticancer Peptide CIGB300 on 3D Head and Neck Tumoroids.

3D cell systems for in vitro experimental studies are able to mimic the in vivo efficacy of drugs before they are tested on animals. However, many studies are still needed in order to mimic the physiological environment with 3D cell-growth systems. The mechano-physical properties of the microenvironment are relevant for the invasiveness of cancer cells and for their drug resistance. In this study, 3D tumoroids of human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) CAL27 cells of different stiffnesses were produced using a tunable PEG-silk fibroin hydrogel (PSF), and the antitumor activity of the peptide

Modulating Protein-Starch Interactions for Microstructure and Rheology of Soft-Textured Dysphagia Foods-A Review.

The design of specific texture-modified foods (TMF) for dysphagia offers a feasible strategy for ensuring safe food intake, adequate nutrient acquisition, and enjoyable sensory experiences for the elderly population. Proteins and starches, two fundamental components of TMF, interact to create unique textural and mechanical properties within the food system, ultimately influencing the quality of foods. Investigating the interaction mechanisms between these macronutrients can provide valuable insights and theoretical foundation for the development of novel dysphagia foods. This paper reviews the

Chitin nanocrystals/alginate complex for tuning stability, rheology and bioavailability of cholecalciferol in Pickering emulsions.

In this paper we investigate polyelectrolyte complexes of sodium alginate (Alg) and chitin nanocrystals (ChNC). Formation, stability and transport properties of sunflower oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by ChNC-Alg complex were studied using dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser Doppler electrophoresis, optical microscopy, potentiometric titration, rheology and simulated digestion. It has been established that during emulsions formation, the ChNC-Alg complex is rearranged at the interface and the formation of a two-layer coating of the droplet occurs. Stabilized O/W emulsions are stable duri

Investigations of cardiac fibrosis rheology by in vitro cardiac tissue modeling with 3D cellular spheroids.

Cardiac fibrosis refers to the abnormal accumulation of extracellular matrix within the cardiac muscle, leading to increased stiffness and impaired heart function. From a rheological standpoint, knowledge about myocardial behavior is still lacking, partially due to a lack of appropriate techniques to investigate the rheology of in vitro cardiac tissue models. 3D multicellular cardiac spheroids are powerful and versatile platforms for modeling healthy and fibrotic cardiac tissue in vitro and studying how their mechanical properties are modulated. In this study, cardiac spheroids were created by

Effect of Nebulized BromAc on Rheology of Artificial Sputum: Relevance to Muco-Obstructive Respiratory Diseases.

Respiratory diseases such as cystic fibrosis, COPD, and COVID-19 are difficult to treat owing to viscous secretions in the airways that evade mucocilliary clearance. Earlier studies have shown success with BromAc as a mucolytic agent. Hence, we tested the formulation on two gelatinous airway representative sputa models, to determine whether similar efficacy exist. Sputum lodged in an endotracheal tube was treated to aerosol N-acetylcysteine, bromelain, or their combination (BromAc). After measuring the particle size of aerosolized BromAc, the apparent viscosity was measured using a capillary t

The Synergetic Impact of Anionic, Cationic, and Neutral Polymers on VES Rheology at High-Temperature Environment.

Hydraulic fracturing operations target enhancing the productivity of tight formations through viscous fluid injection to break down the formation and transport proppant. Crosslinked polymers are usually used for desired viscoelasticity of the fracturing fluid; however, viscoelastic surfactants (VES) became a possible replacement due to their less damaging impact. To design a fracturing fluid with exceptional rheological and thermal stability, we investigated mixing zwitterionic VES with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC), or a poly diallyl dimethylammonium chloride (DAD

From in vitro blood rheology to useful bedside instrumentation for cardiovascular diseases: history and challenges.

I present an historical overview beginning with Prof. Harry L. Goldsmith, my first summer research supervisor in 1963 in microrheology, evolving years later to introduction into my laboratories at McGill University of the coaxial cylinder couette flow device for dynamic, real-time measurements of platelet aggregation in platelet suspensions sheared up to 8000/s, analyzed with a flow cytometer, and finally to a technology transfer of this rheological approach toward the marketplace. I and collaborators observed the shear-dependent roles of different adhesive receptors in mediating human platele

Ethanol-graded fractionation reveals coordinated changes in composition, chain conformation, and rheology of hawthorn pectin.

Hawthorn pectin was separated into four fractions (HHP20-HHP80) using graded ethanol precipitation to examine how compositional changes shape molecular organization and solution behavior. As the ethanol concentration increased from 20% to 80%, the yield decreased from 2.14% to 0.11%, the weight-average molecular weight dropped from 1.09 × 105 g/mol to 1.13 × 104 g/mol, and the degree of esterification declined sharply from 62.16% to 0.96%, accompanied by a marked shift from GalA-dominant fractions (GalA 65.06-71.77% in HHP20-HHP40) to a neutral sugar-enriched fraction (Ara 31.06% in HHP80) and

Blood rheology after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation or gene therapy in sickle cell disease.

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and autologous hematopoietic stem cell-based gene therapies are potentially curative for sickle cell disease (SCD). Although most patients experience resolution of overt clinical symptoms associated with SCD with donor-dominant myeloid chimerism after undergoing HCT or the induction of a substantial amount of alternative hemoglobin (Hb) after gene therapy (GT), whether the underlying subclinical physiology is normalized in these individuals is unknown. One approach to evaluating the underlying physiology is to characterize the blood rheology

N-acetylcysteine inhalation improved sputum rheology in chronic productive cough: Clinical application in two cases.

This pilot study evaluated the effects of inhaled N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on sputum rheology in patients with chronic productive cough (CPC). Rheological measurements before and 30 min after inhalation were compared retrospectively in 16 outpatients receiving either NAC (n = 9) or bromhexine hydrochloride (BXH) (n = 7). NAC inhalation significantly reduced critical strain (γC), an indicator of sputum stringiness, from 2370 [1310-4390] % to 643 [389-700] % (median and interquartile range), with a significantly greater effect than BXH. This reduction was observed regardless of airway fungal colon
