Alternative splicing acts as a strategic switch for heat shock network diversification under escalating heat stress.

Alternative splicing (AS) is a pivotal post-transcriptional mechanism for plant thermal adaptation, yet its dynamics in heat-tolerant woody species remain poorly understood. Here, we map the temperature-resolved AS landscape of the highly thermotolerant woody plant Rhododendron hainanense by combining Iso-Seq with RNA-seq. Transcriptomic profiling revealed a graded regulatory architecture: moderate heat (37 °C) elicited a targeted proteostatic response, whereas severe heat (42 °C) provoked a massive transcriptome expansion. Notably, this global AS surge coincided with a widespread downregulati

[Legendary Hwa Tuo's surgery under general anesthesia in the second century China].

In traditional Chinese medicine, Hwa Tuo (110 ? - 208 A.D.) is one of the most famous doctors. He used only few herbs in drug treatment or applied few points in acupuncture, and achieved excellent results. His ultimate fame came from his remarkable surgical skills and his discovery of general anesthesia. According to the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms (ca. 270 A.D.) and the Annals of the Later Han Dynasty (ca. 430 A.D.), Hwa Tuo performed operations under general anesthesia and the operations even included major ones such as dissection of gangrenous intestines. Before the surgery, he gave pat

Cannabichromeorcin targets cathepsin L to alleviate oxidative stress-Driven airway inflammation in severe asthma.

BACKGROUND: Severe asthma (SA) is characterized by corticosteroid insensitivity, persistent airway inflammation, and excessive oxidative stress, underscoring an urgent unmet therapeutic need. Meroterpenoids derived from Rhododendron capitatum Maxim have demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory properties; however, their therapeutic potential in SA has not been elucidated. METHODS: A meroterpenoid-rich fraction was isolated from R. capitatum Maxim, and cannabichromeorcin (CBCO) was identified as its most abundant constituent. The therapeutic effects of CBCO were evaluated in murine models of SA i

Elevational Differences in Plant Growth Traits, Litter Decomposition, and Soil Bacterial Communities During Deyeuxia angustifolia Encroachment in Alpine Tundra.

Graminoid encroachment in alpine tundra is often reduced to a simple rise in dominant-species cover, leaving open whether this aboveground shift is coupled to belowground soil conditioning. Here, we tracked the encroachment front of Deyeuxia angustifolia (Kom.) Y.L.Chang in the Changbaishan alpine tundra, integrating plant community surveys, growth trait monitoring, litter decomposition, phenology-matched soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and bacterial 16S rRNA sequencing across slightly and largely encroached plots at 2000 and 2200 m. Abundance-weighted plant community compo

Mad Honey Disease: A Rare Condition in an Unlikely Locale.

Background and Aims/Introduction: Mad honey disease is caused by consuming honey containing grayanotoxanes-neurotoxins found in certain species of Rhododendron plants. Mad honey, derived from the nectar of these plants, can cause significant cardiovascular and neurological symptoms. While most cases are reported in regions where it is produced, extensive travel among diverse expatriate communities in various global regions is one of the factors that may contribute to cases occurring in nonendemic areas. Other factors leading to its increased demand include the global demand for its recreationa

Mad honey: uses, intoxicating/poisoning effects, diagnosis, and treatment.

Honey has been used as a folk medicine since 2100 BC; however, mad honey is different from normal natural or commercially available honey as it is contaminated with grayanotoxins, which leads to intoxication/poisoning upon consumption. Grayanotoxin is generally found in Rhododendron genus (family: Ericaceae) and is extracted by bees from nectar and pollens of flowers. Mad honey has been commonly used as an aphrodisiac (sexual stimulant), in alternative therapy for gastrointestinal disorders (peptic ulcer disease, dyspepsia, and gastritis), and for hypertension for a long time. Grayanotoxin act

Farrerol Alleviates Diabetic Cardiomyopathy by Regulating AMPK-Mediated Cardiac Lipid Metabolic Pathways in Type 2 Diabetic Rats.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a prevalent complication of diabetes mellitus characterized by cardiac dysfunction and myocardial remodeling. Farrerol (FA), an active ingredient in Rhododendron with various pharmacological activities, has an unclear specific role in DCM. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of FA on DCM rats and elucidate its mechanism. The type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) model was induced in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats by administering a high-fat diet for 8 weeks along with STZ injection. Subsequent to successful modeling, FA and the positive drug Dapagli

Antibacterial, Antifungal, Antiviral, and Anthelmintic Activities of Medicinal Plants of Nepal Selected Based on Ethnobotanical Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Infections by microbes (viruses, bacteria, and fungi) and parasites can cause serious diseases in both humans and animals. Heavy use of antimicrobials has created selective pressure and caused resistance to currently available antibiotics, hence the need for finding new and better antibiotics. Natural products, especially from plants, are known for their medicinal properties, including antimicrobial and anthelmintic activities. Geoclimatic variation, together with diversity in ethnomedicinal traditions, has made the Himalayas of Nepal an invaluable repository of traditional medicin

When psychedelic discourse meets local narrative: Selective uptake of psychedelic meanings surrounding mad honey in Nepal.

AIMS: 'Mad honey' is produced when bees collect nectar from Rhododendron species containing grayanotoxins, naturally occurring diterpenoid toxins that can produce dose-dependent intoxication. It has long been embedded in Nepalese medicinal and ritual practices but has recently become part of global psychedelic discourse. This study examined how globally circulating discourse and local narrative practices interact in shaping meanings of intoxication, using mad honey as a case. More broadly, it assessed the analytical value of distinguishing between discursive circulation and narrative uptake.

DNA barcoding and phylogenetic insights into the selected endemic flora of the Western Himalayas.

The Himalayan region is recognized as one of the world's major biodiversity hotspots due to its remarkable altitudinal variation, high species richness, and exceptional endemism. Despite its ecological significance, the endemic flora of the western Himalayas remains insufficiently explored at the molecular level. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of multiple nuclear and chloroplast DNA barcode loci (ITS2, rbcL, trnH-psbA, trnA, trnV, rpoB, ycf3, and rbcLa) for the identification and phylogenetic assessment of 32 endemic and threatened plant species representing 31 genera and 24 fami

New Avenues and Major Achievements in Phytocompounds Research for Glioblastoma Therapy.

Phytocompounds have been evaluated for their anti-glioblastoma actions for decades, with promising results from preclinical studies but only limited translation into clinics. Indeed, by targeting multiple signaling pathways deregulated in cancer, they often show high efficacy in the in vitro studies, but their poor bioavailability, low tumor accumulation, and rapid clearance compromise their efficacy in vivo. Here, we present the new avenues in phytocompound research for the improvement of glioblastoma therapy, including the ways to enhance the response to temozolomide using phytochemicals, th
