Metformin-like Methylglyoxal Scavengers from Macroalgae Chondrus crispus and Gracilaria vermiculophyla Preserve Cell Viability.

A quantitative NMR assay was utilized to identify methylglyoxal-scavenging natural products from Rhodophytes, Chondrus crispus and Gracilaria vermiculophylla. This revealed the activity of guanylurea-containing amino acid derivatives, gongrine and gigartinine. The molecules share structural features with the frontline blood glucose-lowering drug and plant natural product derivative, metformin, and scavenge methylglyoxal via the same mechanism, resulting in an imidazole-containing Advanced Glycation Endproduct or AGE. The protective effect of the molecules reported here was evaluated in a cell-

Genome-wide insights into the evolutionary and demographic history of the red alga Mazzaella laminarioides: Evidence for speciation with ancient migration along the southeast Pacific coast.

The mechanisms driving lineage divergence in red algae remain unexplored, despite the group's remarkable diversity and ancient evolutionary history. The red alga Mazzaella laminarioides, a Chilean intertidal species complex composed of three parapatric cryptic lineages (North, Center, South), offers a valuable system to evaluate these processes, as its life history combines severe dispersal limitation with a haploid-diploid cycle that may influence the emergence of reproductive barriers. We reconstructed its evolutionary history using whole-genome sequencing and nuclear genome assembly of repr

Effect of Algal Lectin Siye on Proliferation and Apoptosis of Breast and Colon Cancer Cells.

Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins, some of which exhibit significant anti-tumor activity. Siye is a lectin derived from the red alga Kappaphycus alvarezii that was previously discovered using an artificial intelligence-guided genome mining strategy and shown to exert cytotoxic effects against several human cancer cell lines, including breast adenocarcinoma HCC1937. Based on the presence of shared glycopatterns between breast and colon cancers, we hypothesized that Siye may also exhibit anti-tumor activity against colon cancer cells. The cytotoxic effect of Siye on human colon cancer HC

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Reveal the Structure-Activity Relationships of Kainoid Synthases.

Kainoid synthases are key enzymes in the biosynthesis of kainoids. Kainoids, as represented by DA and KA, are a class of naturally occurring non-protein amino acids with strong neurotransmitter activity in the mammalian central nervous system. Marine algae kainoid synthases include PnDabC from diatoms, which synthesizes domoic acid (DA), and DsKabC and GfKabC from red algae, which synthesize kainic acid (KA). Elucidation of the catalytic mechanism of kainoid synthases is of great significance for the rational design of better biocatalysts to promote the industrial production of kainoids for us

Dietary inclusion of Asparagopsis taxiformis significantly reduces methane emissions in dairy cows by mechanistically altering vitamin B12-dependent and other methanogenesis precursor pathways.

BACKGROUND: Ruminant products are widely consumed due to their high protein and micronutrient content, but ruminant production contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, with methane (CH₄) accounting for 33% of anthropogenic emissions. CH₄ is generated via fermentative processes by the rumen microbiome, primarily through hydrogen utilisation by methanogenic archaea. Feeding beef cattle the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis (ASP) has been shown to reduce CH₄ emissions by up to 80%. However, the microbial mechanisms underlying this reduction remain poorly understood. In this study,

The negative responses and acclimation mechanisms of Neopyropia yezoensis conchocelis filaments to short- and long-term ocean acidification.

BACKGROUND: Ocean acidification (OA) significantly alters the carbonate chemistry of seawater, leading to a decrease of seawater pH to impact the physiological and biochemical processes of those intertidal macroalgae. Previous studies have focused on the response of macroalgae to OA at thallus stage, while the effects at filamentous stage remain insufficiently explored. RESULTS: This study investigated the physiological-biochemical and molecular mechanisms of the filamentous conchocelis stage (the diploid sporophyte) of Neopyropia yezoensis responding to short- (5 days) and long-term (20 days

Domoic acid biosynthesis in the red alga Chondria armata suggests a complex evolutionary history for toxin production.

Domoic acid (DA), the causative agent of amnesic shellfish poisoning, is produced by select organisms within two distantly related algal clades: planktonic diatoms and red macroalgae. The biosynthetic pathway to isodomoic acid A was recently solved in the harmful algal bloom-forming diatom Pseudonitzschia multiseries, establishing the genetic basis for the global production of this potent neurotoxin. Herein, we sequenced the 507-Mb genome of Chondria armata, the red macroalgal seaweed from which DA was first isolated in the 1950s, identifying several copies of the red algal DA (rad) biosynthet

Sarcodia suiae Water Extract Promotes the Expression of Proinflammatory and Th1-Type Cytokines and Delay the Onset of Mortality in Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) During Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae Infection.

Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) is a marine fish of high economic value that grows at a fast rate. However, intensive fish farming has led to disease outbreaks in cobia cultures, which is highly costly to the industry. The impact of infectious diseases on cobia production has led to the inappropriate and increased use of chemicals and antibiotics, which negatively affects the environment and human health and promotes the spread of drug-resistant pathogens. Hence, prophylactic measurements, such as the use of immunomodulators, are required to improve the health of cultured animals against pathogen
