Yeast-Mediated Plastic Biodegradation.

Plastic pollution is a global environmental crisis, and microbial degradation represents a promising remediation strategy. While bacteria have been widely studied, yeasts offer unique advantages for plastic degradation due to their metabolic versatility, stress tolerance, and enzymatic capabilities. However, plastic degradative yeasts have not been reviewed comprehensively. Although several yeasts capable of degrading polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polyethylene (PE) have been reported (e.g., Moesziomyces antarcticus, Candida tropicalis, Yarrowia lipolytica and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa), d

Biotransformation of Selenium in Yeast-Speciation and Nanostructural Analysis.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for human and animal health, and its deficiency in the diet can lead to metabolic disorders. Se-enriched yeast could be an alternative Se supplement for humans. This study aimed to evaluate the bioaccumulation, the biotransformation, and the production of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 7090 as a conventional yeast compared to Rhodotorula glutinis CCY 20-2-26. Identifying selenium compounds and characterizing nanoparticles (SeNPs) formed in their cells using RP-HPLC-ICP-MS and UHPLC-ESI-Orbitrap-MS. In S. cerevisiae AT

Gut microbiota and mycobiota change with feeding duration in mice on a high-fat and high-fructose diet.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is becoming the most common chronic liver disease. The gut microbiome is regarded to play a crucial role in MAFLD, but the specific changes of gut microbiome, especially fungi, in different stages of MAFLD are not well understood. This study aimed to observe the longitudinal changes of colon bacteria and fungi of mice at different feeding duration of a high-fat and high-fructose diet (HFHFD), and explore the association between the changes and the progression of

Species and antifungal susceptibility profile of agents causing vulvovaginal candidiasis in a military population: a cross-sectional study.

Military women on active duty are exposed to constant physical and mental demands, which may predispose them to some infection risks, including vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), a pathology considered a global public health problem. To monitor the prevalent and emerging pathogens in VVC, this study aimed to evaluate the distribution of yeast species and their in vitro antifungal susceptibility profile. We studied 104 vaginal yeast specimens obtained during routine clinical examinations. The population was attended at the Medical Center of the Military Police, São Paulo, Brazil, and was divided i

The unicellular fungal tool RhoTox for risk assessments in groundwater systems.

The recent inclusion of yeasts in environmental monitoring recognizes their ecological significance and sensitivity to toxicants. Here we present a robust and simple two-step toxicity assay and demonstrate the sensitivity of an ubiquitous groundwater yeast, Rhodotorula minuta, to a range of metals and metalloids. The test species was sensitive to copper with a 24h EC50 of 35µg Cu/L, followed in order of decreasing sensitivity by zinc, chromium (VI) and arsenic (EC50 4.40mg As (III)/L). The strain demonstrated an unexpected tolerance to chromium (VI), having an EC50 value (3.45mg Cr (VI)/L) sim

In vitro activity of manogepix and comparators against infrequently encountered yeast and mold isolates from the SENTRY Surveillance Program (2017-2022).

Manogepix is a potent new antifungal agent targeting the fungal Gwt1 enzyme. Manogepix has previously demonstrated potent in vitro activity against clinical isolates of both Candida (except Candida krusei) and Aspergillus species. This study determined the in vitro activity of manogepix and comparators against a large collection of infrequently encountered yeast and molds. Manogepix demonstrated potent in vitro activity against infrequently encountered yeasts exhibiting elevated MIC values to other drug classes, including Candida spp. (MIC50/90, 0.008/0.12 mg/L), Saprochaete clavata (Magnusiom

Plant growth-promoting properties of the phosphate-solubilizing red yeast Rhodosporidium paludigenum.

Phosphorus (P) is one of the essential elements that are necessary for plant development and growth. However, the availability of soluble forms of P for plants in the soils is limited, because a large proportion of it is bound to soil constituents. Thus, the concentration of P available to plants at any time is very low and, moreover, its availability depends on the soil pH. As a solution, phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) are employed that render inorganic P available to plants in soluble form. Thus far, research into PSMs has been insufficient, and only few such organisms have bee

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis associated with a portable home humidifier.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immunologically mediated inflammatory disorder of the pulmonary parenchyma which has been traditionally associated with the inhalation of organic dusts (farmer's lung, pigeon breeder's disease) and a variety of simple chemical compounds. More recently, the disease has been reported in association with the inhalation of aerosolized droplets in home and office settings. In Connecticut, the home and office, rather than the farm or factory, are the most common, although frequently unrecognized, environmental settings in which HP develops. We report here a ca

Comparative study of the in vitro antifungal activity of bifonazole, naftifine and sertaconazole against yeasts.

The in vitro activity of three antifungal agents was tested and compared against 151 yeast strains, including ten Candida species, Cryptococcus neoformans, Rhodotorula rubra, and Trichosporon cutaneum. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined by a microdilution technique in Shadomy modified liquid medium. The mean MICs of sertaconazole (0.34 mg/L) were lower than those of naftifine (16.3 mg/L) and bifonazole (13.2 mg/L). These results suggest that sertaconazole is more active against Candida spp than other topical agents such as bifonazole and naftifine.

Difference Between the Profiles Presented by Yeasts that Colonize the Vaginal Mucosa or Cause Primary or Recurrent Candidiasis.

Candida yeasts are the most frequent in the vaginal content. This yeast may be a normal microbiota but also causes candidiasis. In symptomatic cases, primary candidiasis (VVC) or recurrence (RVVC) can be considered. This study aims to compare the frequency and in vitro sensitivity profile of Candida species isolated in the vaginal content with the different stages of the presence of yeasts. A total of 258 non-pregnant patients with/without VVC were prospectively screened at a teaching Health Centre of the Faculty of Medicine, in the University of Sao Paulo. The vaginal isolates were identified

Ammonium ion concentration-dependent production of extracellular polysaccharides from glycerol by an oleaginous yeast: visualization of the producer cells.

UNLABELLED: In the oleochemical industry, a fat-splitting process is used to generate a methanol-free byproduct, oleochemical industrial waste, that includes crude glycerol. The oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides is a nonconventional yeast that is well known for its industrial potential as a producer of lipids, carotenoids, and enzymes. Extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs) are of increasing interest due to their many applications. In this study, we found that R. toruloides NBRC 8766 strain produced mannose-rich and high-molecular-weight EPSs with a mannose content (mol%) exceeding 90% and

Cascade Reaction by Chemo- and Biocatalytic Approaches to Obtain Chiral Hydroxy Ketones and anti 1,3-Diols.

A chemo- and biocatalytic cascade approach was applied for the stereoselective synthesis of hydroxy ketones and the corresponding 1,3-diols. A new class of tridentate N,N,O ligands was used with copper(II) complexes for the asymmetric β-borylation of α,β-unsaturated compounds. The complex containing ligand L5 emerged as the best performer, and it gave the organoborane derivatives with good ee values. The corresponding keto-alcohol compounds were then bioreduced by yeasts. The biotransformation set up with Rhodotorula rubra allowed (R)-keto-alcohols and (S,S)-diols to be obtained with up to 99

Geo-temporal distribution and biotechnological valorization of indigenous soil yeasts in Mediterranean agroecosystems for sustainable farming solutions.

This paper focuses on the environmental distribution (geographical and temporal) of indigenous yeast between four Mediterranean agroecosystems (barley, faba bean, olive, and vine) and assesses their efficacy as biofertilisers. The analysis indicates high seasonal variations and spatial heterogeneity of yeast communities and density extended between 3 × 102 and 4.5 × 104 CFU/g of soil that depend on five determining factors, which control this distribution, namely, crop type, phenological cycles, rhizospheric effects, vertical stratification, and seasonal variation. These populations are also g
