Workers in the coffee industry were investigated. Study I comprised 50 selected cases of whom 25 had work-related symptoms and 25 had not. Prick tests and RAST investigations with different factory dust extracts were performed. Study II was a cross-sectional study comprising 129 workers who were prick-tested with one factory dust extract and with castor bean (CB). More than 40% described occupationally related asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis or pruritus, and in about half of these cases sensitization with one or two allergens was found. One allergen comes from coffee beans and is found in the

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-infected cell surface proteins were investigated using extrinsic radiolabelling of the cell surface, immunoprecipitation of detergent-solubilized extract of the same cell surface and fractionation of the immunoprecipitates using SDS-PAGE. Glycosylated proteins were identified by their affinity for Ricinus communis lectin. Six glycoproteins with apparent mol. wt. of 170K, 105K, 93K, 81K, 53K and 45K were identified. The 170K glycoprotein was shown to be disulphide-linked since under reducing conditions for SDS-PAGE it was cleaved to a protein of 63K mol. wt. The IgG

The extensive use of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in agriculture has led to persistent soil contamination, posing serious risks to environmental and human health. Developing sustainable, in situ remediation strategies is therefore a priority. This study evaluated an integrated plant-microbe-biochar system for the remediation of CPF-contaminated soils. Indigenous CPF-degrading bacteria were isolated from agricultural soils and screened for degradation efficiency in mineral salts medium (MSM) and soil microcosms. The most efficient isolate, designated C78, was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Kle

The Euphorbiaceae produce a diverse range of diterpenoids, many of which have pharmacological activities. These diterpenoids include ingenol mebutate, which is licensed for the treatment of a precancerous skin condition (actinic keratosis), and phorbol derivatives such as resiniferatoxin and prostratin, which are undergoing investigation for the treatment of severe pain and HIV, respectively. Despite the interest in these diterpenoids, their biosynthesis is poorly understood at present, with the only characterized step being the conversion of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate into casbene. Here, we

Tissue sections from rat submandibular and sublingual glands were studied with lectin probes to identify terminal sugars of the glycoconjugates in various cell types of the salivary glands. The lectins used in the study were Canavalia ensiformis (Con A), Triticum vulgaris (WGA), Succinyl WGA (S-WGA) Ricinus communis I (RCA-I), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), and Ulex europeaus (UEA-I). The cytoplasm and cell membrane of both the serous and mucous acinar cells present high similarity in the distribution of some sugar residues, but differ considerably in the expression of specific sugars which appear ei

Venous leg ulcer (VLU) is a severe complication of chronic venous insufficiency that commonly affects older individuals. It is a long-standing consequence of venous insufficiency and accounts for 70%-80% of lower limb ulcers seen in outpatient departments. These ulcers are often unresponsive to treatment and can significantly impact patients' quality of life, causing pain, sleep disturbances, and decreased mobility. Managing varicose leg ulcers is a significant challenge for physicians.A 55-year-old male presented with symptoms including pain, stiffness, discoloration, swelling in the left low

Previous studies using the lectin RCA-I from Ricinus communis have indicated that several lysosomal enzymes in the fibroblasts of patients deficient in beta-galactosidase carry excess terminal galactose. Electrophoretic studies have shown that the same enzymes and the non-lysosomal adenosine deaminase also show excess terminal sialic acid in patients deficient in sialidase. In this paper we confirm, using Jack-bean beta-galactosidase, that the binding to RCA-I of the purified N-acetyl-beta-D-hexosaminidase from a patient with GM1 gangliosidosis depends on a terminal beta-linked galactose. We p

We used different anti-prion protein (anti-PrP) monoclonal antibodies to capture either full-length or truncated PrP species and then used biotinylated lectin to compare the nature of the glycans on bound PrP species present in control, sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), or variant CJD (vCJD) brains. When full-length PrP species in these three groups were compared, no significant difference in the binding of concanavalin A or Aleuria aurantia lectin was detected. However, the binding of Ricinus communis agglutinin I (RCA) to sCJD and vCJD samples was significantly increased. In contras

The alkaloid ricinine isolated from the plant Ricinus communis, when administered to mice at high doses, induces clonic seizures accompanied by electroencephalographic alterations in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. The lethal nature of ricinine-induced seizures is considered to be a good model for the study of the events that cause death during clonic seizures, particularly those related to respiratory spasms. The initial signs (pre-seizure period) were marked by exophthalmus and decreased locomotor behavior. Animals killed during the preseizure period presented an increased utilization r

The encephalopathy resulting from direct infection of the brain by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which correlates clinically with the AIDS dementia complex, has been reported as being localized to the white matter where it induces myelin loss, gliosis and perivascular infiltration by mononuclear macrophages and multinucleated giant cells. Damage to the cortical grey matter in HIV encephalopathy was investigated in nine randomly selected HIV-positive cases with or without clinical or morphological evidence of encephalopathy and in five age-matched controls, using routine histology and imm

Monoclonal rat antibodies were prepared against glycoproteins isolated from murine teratocarcinoma OTT6050 by affinity chromatography on Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA). These antibodies defined three distinct groups of antigens (OR antigens) commonly expressed in teratocarcinoma cells and in restricted sites of the kidney. OR 17 antigen was a new glycoprotein antigen and the biochemical properties were different from any membrane glycoprotiens or matrix glycoproteins so far described in teratocarcinoma cells. In the kidney, the antigen was found in the glomerular basement membrane, and to l

OBJECTIVE: The synergism among extracts of Senna alata, Ricinus communis, and Lannea barteri, and their anti-infective activities were investigated. The data collected for the antimicrobial activity of the extracts combinations were interpreted to be one of the following categories: synergy; indifferent; additive; or antagonistic. The interpretation was made based on the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) results. FICI of ≤ 0.5 indicates synergism, > 0.5 to 1 indicates additive effects, > 1 to ≤ 4 indifference, and > 4 is considered to be antagonism.
RESULTS: Compared with the d

Plant washing agents-water-extracted from Coriaria nepalensis (CN), Clematis brevicaudata (CB), Pistacia weinmannifolia (PW) and Ricinus communis (RC)-are feasible and eco-friendly for soil heavy metal removal, but their single application has limited removal efficiency. To improve their metal removal efficiencies, two biodegradable assistant agents, hydrolytic polymaleic anhydride (HPMA) and 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA), were investigated in combination with plant washing agents through batch soil washing experiments. Results showed that the addition of HPMA or PBTCA wit

The binding properties of the rat sublingual glycoprotein (RSL) and its asialo product with lectins were characterized by quantitative precipitin(QPA) and precipitin inhibition(QPIA) assays. Among twenty lectins tested for QPA, native RSL reacted well only with Artocarpus integrifolia (jacalin), but weakly or not at all with the other lectins. However, its asialo product (asialo-RSL) reacted strongly with many Gal and GalNAc specific lectins-it bound best to three of the GalNAc alpha 1-->Ser/Thr (Tn) and/or Gal beta 1-->4GlcNAc (II) active lectins [jacalin, Wistaria floribunda and Ricinus comm

The present study describes biochemical and morphological differences of pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK) corneas as compared with normal corneas. At the ultrastructural level, all PBK corneas studied had abnormal fibrillar material posterior to the Descemet's membrane. In addition, two of the six PBK buttons had subepithelial fibrocellular materials disrupting the epithelial basement membrane and Bowman's layer. Aggregates of collagen fibrils with 110 nm periodicity were occasionally seen within the stroma of the PBK corneas. Isolation and purification of the collagen from the Descemet'
