Pathways from conflict-related trauma and ongoing adversity to posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms amongst West Papuan refugees: The mediating role of anxiety and panic-like symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Although the relationship involving exposure to traumatic events (TEs), conditions of adversity, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is well established in the refugee field, the psychological factors mediating the relevant pathways are not as clearly delineated. In the present path analysis, we examined a model in which anxiety and panic-like symptoms mediated the path between conflict-related TEs, ongoing adversity, and PTS symptoms amongst 230 refugees from West Papua. METHODS: Culturally adapted measures were applied to assess TE exposure, ongoing adversity, anxiety, pani

Immigrant Origin and Disability Increase Risk for Anxiety Among Youth During COVID-19: The Role of Unmet Needs for Support in Distance Learning and Family Conflicts.

PURPOSE: Shifting to distance learning due to COVID-19 may decrease teacher support and increase family conflicts, potentially increasing anxiety. Nevertheless, there is scarce information on this topic among disability and/or immigrant-origin groups. Thus, we investigated whether these minority groups reported more anxiety than the reference group-Finnish-origin youth without disabilities-and whether unmet needs for support in distance learning and family conflicts mediated differences in anxiety during the pandemic. Differences in these mediators were also investigated. METHODS: Population-

Editorial Commentary: When Biomechanics Apparently Conflicts With Clinical Practice: The Role of Translational Medicine Regarding Combined Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Lateral Knee Reconstruction.

The role of the anterolateral ligament as a secondary restraint to the anterior cruciate ligament in controlling tibial internal rotation and pivot shift is greatly debated today because biomechanical studies lead to conflicting results. However, extra-articular reconstructions used along with intra-articular reconstructions seem to be able to improve knee stability and reduce the rate of failure, especially when a graft other than bone-patellar tendon-bone is used as an anterior cruciate ligament substitute. For translational medicine, the task is to fill the gap between laboratory studies an

Longitudinal Effects of Parental Drinking Problems and Depression on Adolescent Social Adjustment: Mediating Roles of Constructive and Destructive Marital Conflict, Emotional Security, and Parental Psychological Control.

This study investigates how parental depressive symptoms and drinking problems during early adolescence are linked to adolescents' social adjustment through family-level mechanisms, including marital conflict, psychological control through guilt, and emotional insecurity. Drawing on emotional security theory and a three-wave longitudinal design, data were collected from 281 families beginning when adolescents were in seventh grade and followed annually over 3 years. Structural equation modeling revealed that parental depressive symptoms and drinking problems at Time 1 predicted increased destr

Bundibugyo ebolavirus emergence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo: The critical role of risk communication and community engagement in strengthening health security in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

Since mid-May 2026, a rapidly evolving Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain (Orthoebolavirus bundibugyoense) has been spreading in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (Ituri, North and South Kivu provinces) and Uganda (Kampala and Wakiso areas). Uganda has so far reported 14 imported cases and 5 secondary transmissions according to the World Health Organization (WHO). As of 30 July 2026, 3605 confirmed cases, including 1587 deaths, have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Unlike previous Zaire outbreaks, no specific licensed vaccine or antivira

The impact of facilitating patient involvement on decisional conflict among patients undergoing surgical treatment for lung cancer: the serial mediating roles of hope level and social support.

BACKGROUND: With the development of new technologies, surgical treatment options for lung cancer have become increasingly diverse, providing patients with more choices before surgery, which may lead to hesitation, uncertainty, and decisional conflict. Decisional conflict can affect psychological well-being and may reduce treatment adherence. Facilitating patient involvement has been proposed as a potential strategy to reduce decisional conflict; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. AIM: This study aimed to examine the association between facilitating patient involvement and deci

Alcohol Use Disorder Polygenic Risk Scores and Trajectories of Early Adolescent Externalizing Behaviors: Examining the Role of Parenting and Family Conflict in the Racially/Ethnically Diverse ABCD Sample.

This study examined the independent and interactive effects of alcohol use disorder genome-wide polygenic scores (AUD-PGS) and parenting and family conflict on early adolescent externalizing behaviors. Data were drawn from White (N = 6181, 46.9% female), Black/African American (N = 1784, 50.1% female), and Hispanic/Latinx (N = 2410, 48.0% female) youth from the adolescent brain cognitive development Study (ABCD). Parents reported on youth externalizing behaviors at baseline (T1, age 9/10), 1-year (T2, age 10/11) and 2-year (T3, age 11/12) assessments. Youth reported on parenting and family env

Progesterone Enhances the Sensitivity of Ovarian Cancer Cells to Poly (ADP-Ribose) Polymerase (PARP) Inhibitors by Suggesting a Role for Transcription-Replication Conflict-Related Pathways: An In Vitro Study.

OBJECTIVE: Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage with peritoneal dissemination and ascites. Despite initial chemosensitivity, most patients eventually relapse. Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors have become important maintenance therapies, particularly for tumors with homologous recombination deficiencies. Transcription-replication conflicts (TRCs) are increasingly recognized as a key mechanism related to PARP inhibitor-induced cytotoxicity. Progesterone exerts rapid non-genomic effects via membrane progesterone receptors (mPRs), suppresses topoisomerase I (TOPO-I)

Prospective associations between psychosocial work stress, work-privacy conflict, and relationship satisfaction of young parents during the COVID-19 pandemic: The mediating role of symptoms of depression and anger/hostility.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed employment conditions and childcare availability worldwide. This contributed to higher work-related stress among working parents, which in turn may have led to lower relationship satisfaction. This study examined the prospective associations between psychosocial work stress or work-privacy conflict (WPC) and relationship satisfaction among parents of young children during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, this study aimed to investigate a potential mediating role of psychological symptoms, i.e., symptoms of depression and anger/hostility, and to de

Parents' Perspectives on the Role and Value of School Nurses.

This commentary highlights three themes from the stories contained within this issue of Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics. First, we discuss differing perceptions of school nurses' roles and responsibilities. Administrators, parents, and nurses often have different understandings of nurses' roles. We explain why these differences may lead to confusion and conflict. Second, we describe the respective pressures that parents and school nurses often face. Doing so should help parents and nurses better understand one another's views. Third, we explore ways in which parents and nurses sometimes disagre

Exploring the Mediating Role of Decisional Conflict in the Relationship Between Shared Decision Making, the Use of Routine Outcome Monitoring, Treatment Outcomes and Patient Satisfaction: An Observational Longitudinal Study in Dutch Mental Health Care.

In Shared Decision Making (SDM) patients and clinicians make joint decisions about treatment. The use of Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM) as a personalized source of information can be helpful when making decisions together. Research suggests this approach has beneficial effects on treatment outcomes and satisfaction. The study aims to investigate if the factors associated with the SDM process contribute to treatment outcomes and satisfaction and whether these outcomes are mediated by Decisional Conflict. An observational longitudinal study was performed using data from a heterogeneous group o

Work-family conflict and mental health: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Work-family conflict, defined as a type of inter-role conflict where demands from work and family roles are incompatible, is a global public health concern. Cross-sectional studies consistently demonstrate associations between work-family conflict and adverse mental health outcomes. However, longitudinal evidence remains mixed, highlighting the need for a comprehensive synthesis of available data to better understand its long-term impacts. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies of associations between work-family conflict a

Putative buffering roles of two-way social support and psychological resilience in the association between nurse-patient conflict and situational emotional response: a cross-sectional correlational study among Chinese nursing interns.

BACKGROUND: Nurse-patient conflict acts as a common stressor for nursing interns during clinical training. Existing research fails to empirically verify the synergistic buffering pathways of two-way social support and psychological resilience on interns' situational emotional responses in Chinese clinical settings. This study aimed to describe interns' emotional response status under nurse-patient conflicts and explore relevant associated factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational design was adopted. A total of 423 eligible nursing interns with conflict experience were recruited from s

Work-family conflict to unsafe pre-work commuting: A road through sleep and affect.

The potential for connections between work and commuting experiences (i.e. commuting spillover) is the subject of increasing attention in research and practice. Most commuting spillover work has focused on same-day associations, with little attention to the potential for work-related experiences at home to yield across-day spillover that impairs next-morning commuting safety. We map the process through which work-family conflict at home influences next-morning pre-work commute hard braking, emphasising the interceding roles of sleep and affect in across-day commuting spillover associations. In

Mindsets at work: unpacking the effects of work-care conflict and rumination on employee creativity.

PURPOSE: This study examines the mechanisms through which employee mindset influences creativity, analyzing the antecedent role of work-care conflict, the mediating effect of creative self-efficacy, and the moderating role of work-related rumination. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Using a two-wave time-lagged survey design, data were collected from 324 employee-supervisor dyads across five high-tech enterprises. Structural equation modeling was employed for data analysis. FINDINGS: Work interfering with caregiving negatively affects growth mindset while positively affecting fixed mindset. Care

Clinical Nursing in Times of War and a Pandemic.

Nurses who served in the Vietnam War and those who cared for patients during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic surge may be separated by decades, but they share the experience of caring for large numbers of critically injured, ill, or dying patients while risking their own lives. This article reviews the findings of two studies, one conducted in 1986 based on interviews with Vietnam War nurses, and one conducted in 2020 based on interviews with nurses during COVID-19, and explores the idea that professional nurses from different generations have similar thoughts when their lives are in danger and pat

Relationship between parenting stress profiles, work-family conflict, and adolescent problem behavior: Variable-centered and person-centered approaches.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent problem behaviors, including both internalizing (e.g., emotional symptoms) and externalizing difficulties (e.g., conduct problems, hyperactivity), are a significant risk factor in adolescent development. This study assessed the impact of maternal parenting stress on adolescent problem behaviors and explored mechanisms underlying this relationship. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) identify potential profiles of maternal parenting stress, (2) examine differences in adolescent problem behaviors across these profiles, and (3) determine whether maternal work-family conflic
