Polydopamine-Coated Magnetic Nanoplatform for Magnetically Guided Penetration and Enhanced Antibacterial Efficacy in Root Canal Biofilm Elimination.

Clinical root canal therapy which takes place through mechanical and chemical strategies is faced with challenges in eliminating bacteria owing to the intricate and curved nature of the root canal system. Moreover, the plaque biofilm within the root canal hinders drug penetration and limits treatment efficacy. Hence, efficient root canal therapy hinges on penetrating into the root canal and overcoming the barriers presented by the plaque biofilms. To penetrate and eradicate biofilms effectively at the root canal, we designed a novel magnetic nanoparticle (MN)-based nanoplatform which was synth

Perforating Internal Root Resorption Sealed with Single-Cone Technique Using Bioceramic Sealer: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Internal root resorption (IRR) is a rare dental condition characterized by the progressive resorption of dentin within the root canal, often resulting from infection, trauma, or orthodontic treatment. When IRR progresses to perforation, it creates a communication pathway with periodontal tissues, necessitating effective endodontic therapy and perforation repair. Bioceramic sealers, known for their biocompatibility and flowability, have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional materials for filling and sealing the root canal system. Although commonly used in conventional roo

Treatment of a Young Maxillary Central Incisor with Two Root Canals: A Case Report.

Currently, the common treatment for pulpitis and periapical diseases is root canal treatment. However, the complex variations of root canal system often affect the effect of root canal treatment and even lead to treatment failure. Therefore, it is of great significance for dentists to emphasize the diversity of root canal morphology and to be familiar with the anatomical morphology of root canal to improve the success rate of clinical diagnosis and treatment. We reported a case of an eight-year-old female patient of type V root canal in a young maxillary middle incisor. The young maxillary cen

Beyond the apex: anatomical risk assessment to prevent extrusion injuries in endodontics.

Extrusion of irrigants or obturation materials during endodontic therapy may result in significant complications, ranging from postoperative pain to nerve damage and chronic inflammation. Many of these adverse outcomes can be prevented through detailed anatomical assessment and thoughtful treatment planning. This article explores how anatomical complexities, including root apex morphology, proximity to vital structures, and apical resorption, contribute to extrusion risk.

[Theory and practice of minimally invasive endodontics].

The primary goal of modern endodontic therapy is to achieve the long-term retention of a functional tooth by preventing or treating pulpitis or apical periodontitis is. The long-term retention of endodontically treated tooth is correlated with the remaining amount of tooth tissue and the quality of the restoration after root canal filling. In recent years, there has been rapid progress and development in the basic research of endodontic biology, instrument and applied materials, making treatment procedures safer, more accurate, and more efficient. Thus, minimally invasive endodontics(MIE)has r

The conundrum of current endodontic disinfection strategies in microbial load reduction: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Effective disinfection is a diligent step in the treatment of endodontic infections to reduce the microbial load below a critical level that promotes healing of apical periodontitis (AP). Despite its clinical importance, there is no consensus on the most effective disinfection strategy to achieve this goal. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to comprehensively review the role of current disinfection therapies in microbial reduction during root canal treatment (RCT). METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Relevant clinical

Tooth survival after endodontic treatment.

There are several measures that are, or could be, in use in relation to estimating the outcome of endodontic treatments. It is important to reflect on when and why a certain outcome measure is used; when caring for an individual patient it is obvious that the goal always should be a tooth in a healthy state, that is striving to remove any infection and aim for the tooth to have healthy periapical tissues. For patients in general and for society, it is also interesting to know if endodontic treatments will lead to retention of teeth in a functioning state. From epidemiological studies, with hig

The use of solvents for gutta-percha dissolution/removal during endodontic retreatments: A scoping review.

This scoping review study aimed to map the evidence about solvents' use for gutta-percha dissolution and removal during endodontic retreatments. The study protocol followed the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, available online (https://osf.io/5vy8n/). Reporting was based on PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. We selected dentistry studies that considered the effectiveness of solvents in gutta-percha dissolution in endodontic retreatments and compared their performance to the use of instrumentation techniques without solvents. The search and study screening were performed in PubMed and Sco

[Orthograde (non-surgical) treatment of large apical lesions].

Many clinicians believe that large apical lesions, sometimes as small as ø ≥1 cm, should be treated surgically, as the size of the lesion leads to the assumption that it is a cyst that cannot be treated conventionally. According to Nair (1996), however, only 9% of all lesions are true radicular cysts. In the surgical treatment of large endodontic lesions, it is difficult to achieve good bony healing. Sometimes only scar tissue healing occurs (classification according to Rud and Molven). Due to the surgical procedure, a resti tutio ad integrum does not always result with regard to osseous heali

Cementum regeneration in replanted teeth with differing pulp treatment.

Cementum regeneration on exposed dentinal root surfaces of replanted teeth not subjected to replantation. The implication was that secondary reattachment of replanted teeth was largely dependent on the status of supporting alveolar tissues. The role of the replant appeared essentially passive, reacting as a substrate for cementum deposition that may be more or less acceptable to the regenerating periodontal tissues as dictated by the extraoral history. Although the pattern of cementum deposition was unaltered by replantation, the quantity of new cementum deposited on exposed dentin did appear

Conventional retreatment versus surgery in failed root canal treatment--the importance of canal anatomy.

This case report highlights two important aspects of root canal treatment, knowledge of root canal anatomy and inappropriate use of surgery to correct failure of conventional treatment. Initially, two mandibular incisors were root treated conventionally but only one of the two canals present in both teeth was prepared and filled in each case. Symptoms persisted and a surgical approach was adopted but, again, only one of the root canals in each tooth was located and sealed with a root-end filling. Surgery was performed on a second occasion but again failed to resolve the patient's problems. On

Numerical investigation and optimization of innovative root canal irrigation needles with composite flow control structures.

Needle syringe irrigation is frequently used in root canal therapy, and the flow pattern during irrigation can be efficiently manipulated by means of passive flow control technique, resulting in expected irrigation performance improvement. Therefore, novel needles with composite flow control structures are numerically investigated and optimized in this study. Based on the 30G needle, six single/double side-vented needles with dimple and protrusion are proposed. Two flow rates in line with clinical applications, 5.3 and 8.6 m/s, are used in the analysis. Three performance parameters are investi
