Veillonella parvula promotes root caries development through interactions with Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans.

Root caries is a subtype of dental caries that predominantly impacts older adults. The occurrence and progression of root caries are associated with the homeostasis of dental plaque biofilm, and microbial synergistic and antagonistic interactions in the biofilm play a significant role in maintaining the oral microecological balance. The objective of the current study was to investigate the role of Veillonella parvula in the microbial interactions and the pathogenesis of root caries. The analysis of clinical samples from patients with/without root caries revealed that Veillonella and V. parvula

Effects of a supersaturated pulpal fluid on the formation of caries-like lesions on the roots of human teeth.

Root surfaces were exposed to demineralizing buffer in a continuous-flow system, with or without simultaneous perfusion of the pulp chamber with a supersaturated surrogate dentine fluid (SDF). Experimental lesions formed with perfusion of the pulp were significantly less deep than control lesions formed without perfusion, but the application of hydrostatic pressure to the SDF (15 or 30 cm water) did not produce significantly greater reductions. The lesion depth reduction was attributed to reduced undersaturation at the advancing lesion front through interdiffusion of the demineralizing buffer

Active chitosan hydrogel loaded with polydopamine-coated regeneration silicon for advanced treatment of root caries.

Root caries are primarily caused by cariogenic bacteria, posing a significant threat to the oral health of older adults. Due to the lesion's anatomical location and the moist microenvironment, clinical management is challenging and recurrence rates remain high. In order to address this unmet clinical need, we developed an activated chitosan hydrogel loaded with polydopamine-coated regeneration silicon (PDA-Regesi-CS) for early intervention in root caries. In this formulation, chitosan provides potent antibacterial activity, regeneration silicon promotes cementum remineralization, and polydopam

Root surface caries prevalence and associated factors among adult patients in an acute care hospital.

There have been many studies reporting on the prevalence of root surface caries in elderly populations, but there is little consistency in these reports concerning the associated risk factors. In the present study, intraoral examinations were carried out on adult patients (age range 22 to 91 years, mean age 57.9) on the acute care wards of a teaching hospital. Of the 103 patients examined, 23.3% exhibited carious lesions on root surfaces, these lesions occurring more frequently in males than in females, and more frequently in the 60 years and older age groups. Forty-five per cent of all root l

[Prevalence of root caries and periodontal conditions in an elderly institutionalized population from Piracicaba-SP].

Preventive and invasive dental procedures have improved in the last two decades, leading to a greater longevity of teeth. As a result, teeth are more susceptible to periodontal diseases and, consequently, to root caries. The purpose of this study was to verify the prevalence of both periodontal diseases and root caries in an institutionalized population from Piracicaba-SP, Brazil. In this study, 151 subjects, aging 54 to 93 years, were examined. The sample was divided into two groups: a group of subjects aging 50 to 75 years and a group of subjects over 75 years old. The sextants were examined

An ultrastructural study of bacterial invasion and tissue breakdown in human experimental root-surface caries.

This study describes the structural features of the interface between microbial deposits and root cementum in actively progressing root-surface caries lesions developed experimentally in six elderly individuals. A total of 18 specimens was examined by microradiography, and a further 18 by light and transmission electron microscopy after intra-oral periods of one, two, and three months. All specimens showed various degrees of subsurface dissolution of mineral and bacterial invasion of the cementum. Although the microradiographic pattern of mineral loss was subsurface in nature, transmission ele
