Does the integration of urban and rural health insurance influence the functional limitations of the middle-aged and elderly in rural China?

In January 2016, the Chinese government integrated the two systems of urban resident basic medical insurance and new rural cooperative medical system to establish a unified Urban and Rural Resident Medical Insurance. The integration of medical insurance is purported to enhance access for the rural population; however, a dearth of literature exists regarding its effect on functional impairment among middle-aged and elderly residing in rural areas. This study aims to evaluate the impact of urban-rural health insurance integration on functional limitation among middle-aged and elderly individuals

Rural Health and Atypical Stroke: Technology-Based Posterior Circulation Stroke Diagnosis.

Diagnostic errors cause an estimated 900,000 deaths and disabilities annually in the United States, and stroke is the leading cause of diagnostic error-related harm in US emergency departments. Posterior circulation strokes (PCS's) are frequently misdiagnosed due to atypical presentations such as dizziness. Key contributors to rural-urban care gaps in PCS diagnosis are highlighted for rural care (eg, challenges in bedside diagnosis and limited access to neurologists). Emerging technologies (eg, telestroke, video-oculography-based teledizzy programs, mobile stroke units, and smartphone tools) c

Conceptualizing maternal mental health in rural Ghana: a realist qualitative analysis.

In low- and middle-income countries, maternal mental health needs remain neglected, and common mental disorders during pregnancy and after birth are routinely associated with hormonal changes. The psycho-social and spiritual components of childbirth are often downplayed. A qualitative study was conducted as part of a wider realist evaluation on health systems responsiveness to examine the interrelationships between pregnant and postnatal women, their families, and their environment, and how these influence women's interactions with healthcare providers in Ghana. Data collection methods combine

Rural Health Disparities in Skin Cancer Amplified Among Skin of Color.

Limited studies explore the role social determinants of health have on urban-rural health disparities, particularly for Skin of Color. To further evaluate this relationship, a cross-sectional study was conducted on data from five states using the 2018 to 2021 Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, a national state-run health survey. Prevalence of skin cancer history and urban/rural status were evaluated across these social determinants of health: sex, age, race, insurance status, number of personal healthcare providers, and household income. Overall, rural counterparts were significantly mo

Mental health among rural Latino immigrants during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The mental health of the United States' Latino population significantly deteriorated during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic, and Latino immigrants living in rural areas faced unique vulnerabilities. However, few studies have specifically examined the mental health burden and experiences of rural Latino immigrants during the COVID pandemic. To understand the mental health experiences of first- and second-generation Latinos in rural areas, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 35 Latino residents of rural California counties during July 2020-February 2021 and screened all respondents f

Understanding Giardia infections among rural communities using the one health approach.

The epidemiology of giardiasis in rural villages in Peninsular Malaysia was examined in the context of the One Health triad that encompasses humans, animals and environment (i.e. river water). A cross-sectional study was carried out among five rural communities in Malaysia to determine the prevalence of Giardia duodenalis in humans, animals and river water. Fecal samples collected from humans and animals were examined by light microscopy. Water was sampled from the rivers adjacent to the target communities and investigated for the occurrence of Giardia cysts. The isolated cysts were further ge

Association between job characteristics and health behaviors in Japanese rural workers.

Associations between job characteristics defined by the Karasek's job demand-control model and health behaviors were investigated in a cross-sectional analysis of 6,759 Japanese rural workers. High psychological demands were associated with heavy smoking, exaggerated prevalence of alcohol drinking, and high work-related physical activity. Low job control was associated with lower consumption of vegetables, a smaller quantity number of cigarettes smoked, and a low level of work-related physical activity. Job strain, a combined measure obtained from the ratio of demands to control, was associate

Taking charge of self: breast health practices of older rural women.

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore breast health practices of older Vermont women residing in rural communities. Although the three components of breast health-mammography, clinical breast exam, and self-breast exam-are recommended for women 40 years and over, minimal research has empirically analyzed the breast health practices of healthy women to ascertain if, in fact, these procedures are followed, and if so, what the motivation is for doing so. Twelve women, 50-64 years, participated in face-to-face, audiotaped interviews. Data analysis, including line-by-line and con

Health Care Utilization Among People Experiencing Homelessness in a Rural Region.

Little is known about health care utilization among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in rural areas, who are often unsheltered and face barriers from geographic isolation and resource shortages. We examined emergency department (ED) and acute hospitalization utilization in relation to weather patterns among PEH at a rural health care system in Northwest Michigan (2018-2022). Mental and behavioral health diagnoses accounted for 66.3% of ED visits and 84.4% of hospitalizations. Higher maximum daily temperature was associated with increased ED visits (β=0.017, 95% CI=0.01, 0.24), while tota
