Exploring cannabis as a treatment for chronic pain in a rural Appalachian population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many cannabis laws include medical use with pain as an indication. However, it is not known the extent of cannabis use for pain, the types of pain treated, and the perceived effectiveness of cannabis for chronic pain in this region. The purpose of this study was to understand cannabis use for pain in West Virginia patients. METHODS: Ten thousand chronic pain patients were surveyed, and users and non-users of cannabis were compared. RESULTS: One thousand three hundred fifty-one people responded, with 24% using cannabis. They were in pain for longer, most >10 years.

Epidemiology of Mastalgia in rural populations: A study from Ujjain, India.

Mastalgia is a common breast complaint in women, particularly those of reproductive age, often leading to significant physical and psychological distress. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate 100 female patients with mastalgia over an 18-month period, assessing them through clinical examination, ultrasonography (USG), fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and mammography. The most frequent diagnoses were fibroadenosis (36%) and fibroadenoma (30%). Surgical management provided greater relief (90.5%) compared to medical therapy (80.9%), with Evening Primrose Oil being the most effective med

The Epidemic of Congenital Syphilis in the Indigenous and Rural Populations of South Dakota.

From 2020 to 2023, South Dakota witnessed a substantial increase in cases of congenital syphilis (CS), with the highest rates identified in rural and Native American (NA) communities. Here, we discuss 3 severe cases of CS in premature infants born to NA individuals and communities in South Dakota with poor access to prenatal care. The infants in these 3 cases presented with varying clinical conditions, including respiratory failure, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, severe direct hyperbilirubinemia, feeding intolerance, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Lack of prenatal care and o

The present study estimated the prevalence of TB and identified factors associated with TB infection in people living in rural communities in Shan State. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed to gather information from participants. People age

Prevalence and correlates of hypertension in a semi-rural population of Southern India.

While elevated blood pressure is a recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the prevalence of hypertension still remains unclear for most populations. A door-to-door survey was conducted using modified WHO STEPS questionnaire in a group of villages under the Thavanampalle Mandal of Chittoor District in the state of Andhra Pradesh of South India. Data were collated and analyzed for 16,636 individuals (62.3% females and 37.7% males) above 15 years of age. Overall, prevalence of hypertension (as per JNC-7 classification) was found to be 27.0% (95% CI, 26.3, 27.7) in the surveyed communi

Exposure to pesticides and mental disorders in a rural population of Southern Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to pesticides has been associated with mental disorders, especially in occupationally exposed populations, such as farmers. This effect has been attributed to the neurotoxic and endocrine-disrupting activity of pesticides, as suggested by experimental studies. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of common mental disorders and self-reported depression, and analyze their association with the exposure to pesticides in a rural population resident in the municipality of Dom Feliciano, Rio Grande do Sul, where tobacco farming is the main economic activity. METHODOLOGY: A

High prevalence of myasthenia gravis among rural adult populations.

OBJECTIVE: There is no evidence of an increased prevalence of myasthenia gravis (MG) in rural agricultural communities. We conducted a prevalence study to examine the prevalence of MG in populations living in rural versus urban areas. METHODS: We retrieved the electronic medical records of all members of the Health Maintenance Organization to detect patients who had the diagnosis of MG of the district in the year 2012. Main outcome measured the relative risk (RR) of patients with MG compared with controls. RESULTS: A total of 248 total MG cases were found in the 527,258 individuals in the re

Prevalence of and risk factors for pterygia in a rural Northern Chinese population.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of and associated risk factors for pterygia development in a high-latitude-dwelling Northern Chinese population. METHODS: A prospective population-based survey was conducted between November 2008 and July 2009. A stratified, clustered, randomized sampling procedure was used to select 8445 subjects, aged ≥18 years, all with diagnosed, graded pterygia. Risk factors associated with the occurrence of pterygia were evaluated according to logistic regression models. RESULTS: A total of 8445 residents (aged 18-94 years) from the Heilongjiang Province, China, par

Source of prescription drugs used nonmedically in rural and urban populations.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional overdose deaths due to nonmedical use of prescription drugs disproportionately impact rural over urban settings in the United States. Sources of these prescriptions may play a factor. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the relationships between rurality and source of prescription drugs used nonmedically. METHODS: Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2008-2010 (n = 10 693), we examined bivariate and multivariate associations of socio-demographic and clinical correlates and source (physician or non-physician) of prescription drugs (opioid, sedative,

Seroprevalence and incidence of genital ulcer infections in a rural Ugandan population.

OBJECTIVES: To determine age-sex specific seroprevalence and incidence rates of Treponema pallidum, Haemophilus ducreyi, and HSV-2; to assess the association between HIV-1 status and incidence of these STIs; and HSV-2 serostatus with number of lifetime sexual partners. METHODS: Antibodies against HIV-1, T pallidum, H ducreyi, and HSV-2 infections were tested using approximately 1000 paired (2 year interval) sera collected from a rural adult (15-54 years) population cohort in south west Uganda. RESULTS: Overall HIV-1 prevalence was 4.9%. Prevalence for T pallidum was 12.9% among males and 12.

The vitamin A and E status was evaluated in 279 volunteer subjects, 3 to 75 years old (131 males and 148 females) from 8 villages in the north of Cameroon by fluorimetric methods. The results obtained showed that: the mean serum vitamin A level was 16.6 +/- 0.7 microgram % (ranging from 2.1 to 69.3 micrograms %) and vitamin E, 499.9 +/- 19.3 micrograms % (ranging from 222.7 to 1893.1 micrograms %); the percentage deficiency of vitamin A among the subjects was 71.7% and that of vitamin E was 66% (vitamin A levels < 20 micrograms/100 ml) vitamin E levels < 500 micrograms/100 ml; children of ages

High incidence of Coxiella burnetii markers in a rural population in France.

Since Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, is often transmitted from goats and sheep to humans through aerosols, we examined the sera from 168 persons involved in goat breeding in the Centre region of France and 40 members of veterinary and medical staff from the same region for the presence of antibodies against C. burnetii. An immunofluorescence assay was used to detect the presence of antibodies of the IgG isotope against epitopes from phase II of C. burnetii, which are the first antibodies to appear in infected people, and from phase I, which reflect more chronic stages of th

[Knowledge of the rural population on factors promoting the emergence of arterial hypertension].

A random sample of the rural community (two villages) were examined by means of questionnaire. Seventy-four percent of the community could not denote any risk factors of arterial hypertension. A very low percentage were informed of the role played by sodium chloride in the genesis of hypertension. Moreover, the community was very poorly informed of the adverse effects of overweight, tobacco smoking, and alcohol abuse. Excess use of sodium chloride was likely to be one of the causes promoting high prevalence of arterial hypertension. Some of the people were of opinion that arterial blood pressu
