Prevalence and factors associated with self-reported HIV testing among adolescent girls and young women in Rwanda: evidence from 2019/20 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS remains a major public health problem globally. The majority of people living with HIV are from Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15-24 years. HIV testing is crucial as it is the gateway to HIV prevention, treatment, and care; therefore this study determined the prevalence and factors associated with self-reported HIV testing among AGYW in Rwanda. METHODS: We conducted secondary data analysis on the AGYW using data extracted from the nationally representative population-based 2019/2020 cross-sectional Rwanda Demographic and Heal

Assessment of the use of electronic medical records system and barriers in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Currently the use of electronic medical records (EMR) systems emerged globally especially OpenMRS to significantly improve healthcare delivery. However, challenges persist in achieving full EMR adoption, particularly in developing countries. In Rwanda, OpenMRS system was introduced in 2013 as a strategy to align digital health to the country’s information and communication technologies (ICT)-for-development agenda. Reports from healthcare providers indicate varying EMR adoption levels in health facilities in Rwanda. This study aims to assess the current usage of EMR and identify im

Phenomenological analysis of lived experiences within the LGBTQ+ community in Rwanda.

Despite the existence of laws protecting human rights in Rwanda, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people continue to face discrimination with its roots in cultural, religious, and moral beliefs. This study explored the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals using a phenomenological design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and digital storytelling with 57 participants from six districts. Participants were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling, ensuring homogeneity and representation. A thematic queer phenomenological a

Safe delivery of intensive care for Marburg virus disease in Rwanda.

Outbreaks of filovirus diseases, such as Marburg virus disease, present a threat to global health security, with high case-fatality rates and substantial risks of nosocomial transmission to health-care workers. However, recent advances in the delivery of optimised supportive care and pathogen-specific treatments have improved outcomes. In the third largest outbreak of Marburg virus disease (Rwanda, 2024), highly skilled medical and nursing staff provided critical care that included invasive mechanical ventilation, blood product replacement, advanced imaging, and laboratory-guided electrolyte m

Quality and resilience of clinical laboratories in Rwanda: a need for sustainable strategies.

BACKGROUND: Quality healthcare is a global priority, reliant on robust health systems for evidence-based medicine. Clinical laboratories are the backbone of quality healthcare facilitating diagnostics, treatment, patient monitoring, and disease surveillance. Their effectiveness depends on sustainable delivery of accurate test results. Although the Strengthening Laboratory Management Towards Accreditation (SLMTA) programme has enhanced laboratory quality in low-income countries, the long-term sustainability of this improvement remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To explore the sustainability of qual

Diversity and antibiotic sensitivity of uropathogens from a regional hospital in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections are a common cause for antibiotic consumption. Empirical treatment is common for community-acquired infections owing to predictability of pathogens. OBJECTIVES: Describe sensitivity profiles of uropathogens at a regional hospital in Rwanda. METHODS: Hospital-based cross-sectional study in which clean-catch urine samples were analyzed. A two-stage process involving dipstick urinalysis and urine culture was used to identify true infections. The Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method was used for antibiotic sensitivity analysis as per EUCAST guidelines. RESULTS:

Predictors of Survival: A Retrospective Review of Gastroschisis and Intestinal Atresia in Rwanda.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal surgical diseases are prime examples of the global disparity in surgical access and outcomes, with survival for conditions like gastroschisis reaching above 95% in high-income settings but usually fatal in low-income settings. This study aims to examine outcomes and predictors of mortality in patients with two specific neonatal surgical conditions that often require early transfer and prolonged inpatient care (gastroschisis and intestinal atresia) at Rwanda's main pediatric referral hospital. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective chart review of neonates with gast

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the food rations of refugees in Rwanda.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has significantly impacted the global economy, by forcing people to stay indoors and creating a 'new normal' of living. Rwanda has made notable efforts to fight the pandemic. However, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the country's economy are numerous and the refugees residing in Rwanda are not spared these effects. As of December 2020, 164,000 people were granted refugee status in Rwanda according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The majority were from neighbouring countries in the Great Lakes regions, including DRC (Democ

Stability of Oxytocin Preparations in Malawi and Rwanda: Stabilizing Effect of Chlorobutanol.

Oxytocin is used for the prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, the leading cause of maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries. Because of the high instability of oxytocin, most products are labeled for storage at 2-8°C. Some other products are on the market which are labeled for non-refrigerated storage, but independent evaluations of their stability hardly exist. In the present study, seven brands (nine batches) of oxytocin were purchased from wholesalers and medical stores in Malawi and Rwanda and investigated by accelerated stability testing according to the ICH/WH

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Rwanda: an update on their epidemiology and control.

Even though Rwanda lies within a region that has a high prevalence of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, epidemiological information regarding these infections in the country remains scarce. The present review attempts to compile the available data on schistosomiasis and STHs, from 1940 to 2014, to provide an insight on the epidemiological profile of these infections. This information will, in turn, support the design and implementation of sustainable control measures. The available records indicate that only Schistosoma mansoni and all the major species of STHs ar
