Large and diffuse ductal carcinoma in situ: potentially lethal subtypes of "preinvasive" disease.

PURPOSE: Trials for DCIS have not explored whether outcomes for patients with large disease burden requiring mastectomy are comparable to those of patients with lumpectomy-amenable disease. We aim to identify whether patients with DCIS larger than 5 cm and diffuse-type DCIS differ in breast cancer mortality (BCM) from patients with disease less than 5 cm. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with DCIS in the SEER program were assessed to identify factors prognostic of breast-cancer-specific survival using competing risks regression. RESULTS: 44,849 patients met criteria for the cumulative incidence e

Development and validation of a nomogram to predict cancer-specific survival of uveal melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Uveal melanoma (UM) is a rare but aggressive cancer, which is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults. We aimed to develop and validate a competing risk nomogram to predict cancer-specific survival (CSS) of patients with UM, as well as compare its prognostic value with that of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system. METHODS: Data of patients diagnosed with UM from 2010 to 2015 were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. We extracted and integrated significant prognostic factors based on competing risk

Specific survival nomograms based on SEER database for small intestine adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Small intestine cancers, as an extremely rare tumor type, account only for 3% of all gastrointestinal tumors. Small intestine adenocarcinoma (SIA), representing approximately one-third of all small bowel cancers, has received relatively little attention, both in research efforts and clinical cognizance. Owing to anatomical proximity and rarity, small bowel adenocarcinomas are frequently grouped with colorectal adenocarcinomas. Therefore, a large SIA patient cohort is needed to develop and validate new nomogram prognostic models specific to SIA patients. METHODS: Patients diagnosed

The Impact of Radiotherapy on the Incidence of Secondary Malignancies: A Pan-Cancer Study in the US SEER Cancer Registries.

The population of cancer patients with second primary malignancies (SPMs) is rapidly growing. The relationship between radiotherapy and SPMs for some types of tumors is unknown or debated. In this study, we identify 24 types of first primary malignancies (FPMs) between 2004 and 2015 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Patients in the radiotherapy group were matched to those in the no radiotherapy group with a matching ratio of 1:1. After propensity-score matching (PSM), additional competing risk regression analyses were performed to calculate the efficacy of rad

Trends in Gallbladder Cancer Incidence and Survival in Korea.

PURPOSE: The current study was undertaken to examine the trend in gallbladder cancer (GBC) incidence and survival in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: GBC incidence data by histologic typewere obtained from the Korea Central Cancer Registry. Age-standardized incidence rates were calculated using the mid-year Korean population of 2000 as a standard population, and a joinpoint regression model was used to calculate the annual percent change (APC) in incidence rates. Incidence by Surveillance, Epidemiology and End results (SEER) summary stage and by geographical areas and female-to-male incidence ra

Cancer Incidence and Survival Trends by Subtype Using Data from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Program, 1992-2013.

Background: Cancers are heterogeneous, comprising distinct tumor subtypes. Therefore, presenting the burden of cancer in the population and trends over time by these tumor subtypes is important to identify patterns and differences in the occurrence of these subtypes, especially to generalize findings to the U.S. general population. Methods: Using SEER Cancer Registry Data, we present incidence rates according to subtypes for diagnosis years (1992-2013) among men and women for five major cancer sites: breast (female only), esophagus, kidney and renal pelvis, lung and bronchus, and thyroid. Second neoplasms in survivors of endometrial cancer: impact of radiation therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of radiotherapy to subsequent second cancers in endometrial carcinoma survivors. METHODS: Subjects with endometrial cancer as their first malignancy were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database from 1973 to 2004 and were divided into radiation (R) and No Radiation (NR) groups. Person years at risk (PYR), observed (O) and expected (E) counts and SIR (standardized incidence ratio) were determined. (%) increase in relative risk (RR) for R vs. NR group was calculated using Poisson regression. Absolute Excess Risk (AER)

Continued rightward shift of colorectal cancer.

PURPOSE: Previous analyses of the time trends of colorectal cancer have suggested a shift from left-sided toward right-sided cancer sites. The aim of this study was to determine whether such trends in the subsite distribution of colorectal cancer could be confirmed in hospitalization statistics similarly as in the incidence data. METHODS: The inpatient files of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result database of the National Cancer Institute were used to study the time trends of colorectal cancer in the United States during the past three decades.

Prognostic models and nomograms for predicting survival of patients with maxillary sinus carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus carcinoma is an uncommon malignancy. Most reports on prognosis of this disease are from single institutions and include few patients. We used data from the United States National Cancer Institute's Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program to construct models and nomograms for predicting outcomes of patients with maxillary sinus carcinomas. METHODS: We used records from 668 patients with primary maxillary sinus carcinomas reported to the SEER program from 2004 to 2013 to build nomograms based on stratified multivariable Cox proportional hazard models

Housing assistance among patients with cancer: SEER-Medicare US Department of Housing and Urban Development data linkage.

BACKGROUND: Lack of stable, affordable housing is an important social determinant of health. Federal housing assistance may buffer against housing vulnerabilities among low-income households, but research examining the association of housing assistance and cancer care has been limited. We introduce a new linkage of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program-Medicare and US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administrative data. METHODS: Individuals enrolled in HUD public and assisted housing programs between 2006 and 2021 were linked with cancer diagnoses betwee
