Saccade reaction test for the assessment of cognitive readiness.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive performance such as rapidly reacting to a target or making correct decisions can directly impact task effectiveness in military, emergency, or athletic settings. Saccades are rapid changes in gaze that support recognition and analysis of objects of potential interest in human vision whose acuity rapidly degrades away from the center. The saccade behavior is highly selective and controlled and thus is an expression of attention. We implemented a two-dimensional reactive saccade task to quantify attention performance. METHODS: We studied a sample of 169 healthy individuals

Saccadic contributions to smooth pursuit in macular degeneration.

Saccades during smooth pursuit can help bring the fovea on target, particularly in cases of low pursuit gain. Individuals with macular degeneration often suffer damage to the central retina including the fovea, which impacts oculomotor function such as fixation, saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements. We hypothesized that these oculomotor changes in macular degeneration (MD) would make saccades less appropriately directed (even if more numerous). To investigate saccades during pursuit in MD, we conducted a quantitative analysis of smooth pursuit eye movement data from a prior study, Vision

Reflexive and Intentional Saccadic Eye Movements in Migraineurs.

Background: Migraine has been postulated to lead to structural and functional changes of different cortical and subcortical areas, including the frontal lobe, the brainstem, and cerebellum. The (sub-)clinical impact of these changes is a matter of debate. The spectrum of possible clinical differences include domains such as cognition but also coordination. The present study investigated the oculomotor performance of patients with migraine with and without aura compared to control subjects without migraine in reflexive saccades, but also in intentional saccades, which involve cerebellar as well

Saccadic reaction time and ocular findings in phenylketonuria.

BACKGROUND: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by reduced activity of phenylalanine hydroxylase resulting in elevated blood phenylalanine (Phe) concentration. Despite some obvious ocular changes, the disorder has been poorly recognized by ophthalmologists. Neurophysiologic tests imply prolonged reaction time correlating with increased phenylalanine blood concentrations. We aimed to test saccadic reaction time in PKU patients in dependency of blood phenylalanine concentrations. METHODS: Nineteen biochemically diagnosed PKU patients and 100 controls completed

Saccadic delay in multiple sclerosis: A quantitative description.

In multiple sclerosis (MS), eye movement disorders are common and can be quantified with infrared video-oculography. A well-known abnormality is internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO). This study aims to describe saccadic abnormalities beyond INO and investigate their clinical relevance. A validated standardized infrared oculography protocol, DEMoNS, was used for quantifying saccadic eye movements in three different tasks in MS patients and healthy controls. The relationship between the saccadic parameters and disease characteristics was investigated. Furthermore, the association between saccadic

Gain control of saccadic eye movements is probabilistic.

Saccades are rapid eye movements that orient the visual axis toward objects of interest to allow their processing by the central, high-acuity retina. Our ability to collect visual information efficiently relies on saccadic accuracy, which is limited by a combination of uncertainty in the location of the target and motor noise. It has been observed that saccades have a systematic tendency to fall short of their intended targets, and it has been suggested that this bias originates from a cost function that overly penalizes hypermetric errors. Here, we tested this hypothesis by systematically man

Comparison of three models of saccade disconjugacy in strabismus.

In pattern strabismus the horizontal and vertical misalignments vary with eye position along the orthogonal axis. The disorder is typically described in terms of overaction or underaction of oblique muscles. Recent behavioral studies in humans and monkeys, however, have reported that such actions are insufficient to fully explain the patterns of directional and amplitude disconjugacy of saccades. There is mounting evidence that the oculomotor abnormalities associated with strabismus are at least partially attributable to neurophysiological abnormalities. A number of control systems models have

On the limited effect of stimulus boundaries on saccade metrics.

How the endpoint of saccadic eye movements is determined out of many potential peripheral locations is a crucial issue in the field of vision. Models of saccade generation account for this seemingly selective process in terms of competitive interactions between populations of neurons that encode respectively for different saccade amplitudes and directions. However, these models do not specify which visual stimulus properties other than the relative location of the stimuli are involved and how these properties contribute to ultimately determine a single saccade endpoint. We addressed this issue

Saccadic adaptation in lateral medullary and cerebellar infarction.

To determine the adaptive capability of saccadic eye movements, and its association with enduring saccadic dysmetria in cerebellar and lateral medullary infarction (LMI), we investigated saccadic accuracy and adaptation in 15 patients with cerebellar or lateral medullary infarction, compared with those of 7 patients with diffuse cerebellar atrophy and 11 normal subjects. Saccade adaptation was elicited by a 37.5% backward target step during the primary saccade in both horizontal directions. Horizontal preadaptive saccadic gains were decreased in patients with cerebellar infarction, and contral

Motion perception of saccade-induced retinal translation.

Active visual perception relies on the ability to interpret correctly retinal motion signals induced either by moving objects viewed with static eyes or by stationary objects viewed with moving eyes. A motionless environment is not normally perceived as moving during saccadic eye movements. It is commonly believed that this phenomenon involves central oculomotor signals that inhibit intrasaccadic visual motion processing. The keystone of this extraretinal theory relies on experimental reports showing that physically stationary scenes displayed only during saccades, thus producing high retinal

Adaptive modification of saccade amplitude in Parkinson's disease.

The accuracy of saccades (fast eye movements) is maintained over time and is an adaptive ability usually ascribed to the cerebellum. Adaptation might occur elsewhere in certain tasks, such as in the prefrontal cortex for memory-guided saccades. We hypothesized that adaptation of memory-guided saccades would be impaired in Parkinson's disease, as basal ganglia dysfunction can disrupt the operation of the prefrontal cortex, while adaptation of visually guided saccades would be preserved. Adaptation was induced by consistently yet imperceptibly displacing targets as saccades were made toward them

Effects of visual training on saccade control in dyslexia.

This study reports the effects of daily practice of three visual tasks on the saccadic performance of 85 dyslexic children in the age range of 8 to 15 years. The children were selected from among other dyslexics because they showed deficits in their eye-movement control, especially in fixation stability and/or voluntary saccade control. Their eye movements were measured in an overlap prosaccade and a gap antisaccade task before and after the training. The three tasks used for the training included a fixation, a saccade, and a distractor condition. In any of these tasks, the subject had to dete

Abnormal saccadic eye movements in autistic children.

The saccadic eye movements, generated during a visual oddball task, of autistic children, normal children, children with attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity (ADDH), and dyslexic children were examined to determine whether autistic children differed from these other groups in saccadic frequency. Autistic children made more saccades during the presentation of frequent stimuli (than normals and ADDH children), and between stimulus presentations. Also, unlike the normal and dyslexic groups, their saccadic frequency did not depend on stimulus type. This abnormal pattern of saccades may neg

Cerebellar peduncle lesion without saccadic abnormalities.

A 66-year-old woman had a unilateral infarction in the cerebellar peduncle. Saccadic eye movements were intact in this patient, while smooth-pursuit eye movements were impaired. Magnetic resonance imaging disclosed that the lesion was well localized in the superior cerebellar peduncle and the juxtarestiform body. These findings support the idea that saccade signals from the cerebellum project to the brainstem through the hook bundle, which was recently confirmed in the monkey.

Saccadic latency as a measure of afferent visual conduction.

Latency to initiate a saccadic eye movement to a visual target, and visual evoked potential, were measured in seven patients with resolved unilateral optic neuritis. Saccades were delayed when the target was presented to the clinically involved eye, but were normal when the contralateral eye was tested. With binocular target presentation, saccades were symmetric between eyes and normal in latency. In two patients with pituitary adenoma and low-grade bitemporal field defects, saccades were delayed when targets were presented in the temporal field, but were within normal limits when presented in

Rightward Saccades Distort the Scaffold of Spatial Working Memory in ADHD.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is typically characterized by executive dysfunction, yet emerging evidence points to spatially asymmetrical features of cognition. We examined whether transsaccadic working memory (tWM), the mechanism that integrates visual and motor signals across eye movements, shows directional vulnerability in ADHD. Participants with ADHD completed a spatial tWM task in which memory arrays (one or three items) were presented before leftward, rightward, or fixation trials, and repositioned a probe to the remembered target location. For comparison, data from a

Hippocampal Theta Distinguishes between Memory-Guided and Exploratory Saccades in Humans.

Memory shapes how we explore the visual world, but the neural mechanisms linking mnemonic processes to eye movements during naturalistic viewing remain poorly understood. Theta-band oscillatory activity in the hippocampus is time-locked with eye movements in primates, suggesting a putative mechanism for coordinating mnemonic processing and oculomotor behavior. Yet, it remains unknown whether this coupling generalizes to episodic memory-guided viewing in humans, whether slow (3-6 Hz) and fast (6-10 Hz) theta bands play dissociable functions, and whether this coupling is sensitive to the directi

Learned statistical regularity modulates anticipatory micro-saccades toward suppressed distractor locations.

Learned statistical regularity enables individuals to suppress locations associated with salient distractors, yet the mechanisms underlying this suppression remain unclear. Proactive accounts propose that suppression operates without prior attentional allocation to distractor locations, whereas reactive accounts suggest that suppression requires covert attention to the distractor location before it can be engaged. To address this ongoing debate, the current study records micro-saccades-an index of covert attention-during the pre-stimulus interval, alongside electroencephalogram (EEG) data coll
