PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a youth-friendly intervention in promoting one safe sex behavior-contraception and condom use among unmarried young people aged 15-24 years in Shanghai, China.
METHODS: The study was conducted in two towns of a suburban area of Shanghai (one as the intervention and the other as the control), with comparable socio-cultural-economic and demographic characteristics. The intervention intended to build awareness and offer counseling and services related to sexuality and reproduction among unmarried youths, in addition to the routine program activities, whi

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) are disproportionately affected by HIV even in the most generalized HIV epidemics. Although structural HIV risks have been understood to affect condom negotiation among FSWs globally, there remain limited data on the relationship between structural determinants of HIV risk, including violence and socioeconomic status, and condom use among FSWs across sub-Saharan Africa. Here, we describe the prevalence of structural determinants and their associations with condom use among FSWs in Senegal.
METHODS: In 2015, 758 FSWs >18 years of age were recruited using r

This paper estimates population-based prevalence of HIV, syphilis, HSV-2 and factors influencing HIV infection using a national sample of 1914 female sex workers (FSWs) in 7 regions in Tanzania. Additionally, HIV incidence was estimated by comparing biological HIV results with self-reported HIV status. The average HIV prevalence among FSWs in all 7 regions was 28%, ranging from 14% in Tabora to 38% in Shinyanga. HIV incidence was found to be 13 per 100 person-years. Syphilis prevalence was 8% with significantly higher burden found in Iringa (11%), Mbeya (13%), and Shinyanga (12%). Nearly 60% o

While sex workers (SWs) bear the brunt of the epidemic in Uganda, there remains a dearth of empirical research on the structural drivers of HIV prevention among SWs. This study examined the drivers of inconsistent condom use by one-time and regular clients of young women SWs in Gulu, Northern Uganda. Data were drawn from the Gulu Sexual Health Study, a cross-sectional study of young SWs, aged 14 years and older (2011-2012). SWs were recruited using peer/SW-led outreach, in partnership with The AIDS Support Organization and other CBOs. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the c

INTRODUCTION: Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a promising new prevention approach for those most at risk of HIV infection. However, there are concerns that behavioural disinhibition, specifically reductions in condom use, might limit PrEP's protective effect. This study uses the case of female sex workers (FSWs) in Johannesburg, South Africa, to assess whether decreased levels of condom use following the introduction of PrEP may limit HIV risk reduction.
METHOD: We developed a static model of HIV risk and compared HIV-risk estimates before and after the introduction of PrEP to determi

Objective: To understand the current status of HIV infection in men who have sex with men (MSM) in Nanjing, explore the associated factors with HIV infection, and provide information for the intervention in MSM. Methods: Data collected in the consecutive sentinel surveillances among MSM during 2011-2015 includes MSM's social-demographic information, sexual behavior histories, access to HIV prevention services and HIV testing in the past year. The infection trend was analyzed with χ2 test and the factors associated with HIV infection were identified through multivariate logistic regression anal

BACKGROUND: The Avahan Initiative, a large-scale HIV preventive intervention targeted to high-risk populations including female sex workers (FSWs), was initiated in 2003 in six high-prevalence states in India, including Karnataka. This study assessed if intervention exposure was associated with condom use with FSWs' sexual partners, including a dose-response relationship.
METHODS: Data were from a cross-sectional study (2006-07) of 775 FSWs in three districts in Karnataka. Survey methods accounted for the complex cluster sampling design. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression was use

Implementation of sexual and reproductive health policies in Chile has faced strong opposition in the past 30 years. However, during the 2000s, the country introduced the possibility of access to emergency contraceptive pills; access varied at the local level, depending on each municipality's decision to adopt the policy. Taking advantage of this unstructured implementation of the emergency contraception policy in the country, the study aimed at identifying the impact of the availability of emergency contraception pills on sexual and reproductive behavior, using multilinear regressions as well

BACKGROUND: Low-cost and scalable behavioural interventions to prevent HIV among young people in Africa are needed. As access to smartphones grows, digital interventions will become increasingly viable. We assessed the efficacy of an interactive narrative-based smartphone game (Tumaini) designed to increase age and condom use at first sex.
METHODS: In this two-arm, non-blinded, individually randomised trial, participants aged 12-14 years were recruited at community level in Kisumu, Kenya. Sex-stratified block randomisation (1:1; block size of 10) was undertaken by study staff with no contact

BACKGROUND: Declines in condom use among the general young population highlight the need for effective interventions to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. With this study, we aim to examine the relationship between Behavior Change Techniques (BCTs, the active components of interventions) and the effects of condom interventions among youth. We quantify the number of BCTs used in the interventions, assess their alignment with underlying behavioral theory, and evaluate coverage of specified Mechanisms of Action (MoA, underlying process through which behavior may be

BACKGROUND: Effective condom use negotiation is crucial for reducing HIV risk and unintended pregnancies. While studies have emphasized condom use, they often overlook the negotiation process, a critical factor in mitigating sexual health risks. This study examines factors influencing condom use negotiation among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Mozambique.
METHODS: Data from the 2022-23 Mozambique Demographic and Health Survey (MZDHS) were analyzed, focusing on 2,624 AGYW aged 15-24. Condom use negotiation, defined as the ability to ask a partner to use a condom, was treated as a b

People living with HIV (PLWH) face difficult decisions about disclosing their HIV status to new sexual partners. Alcohol and other drug use could impact these decision-making processes and subsequent sexual risk behavior. We sought to examine the event-level relationships between substance use, HIV disclosure, and condom use in PLWH and their first-time HIV-negative or unknown status sexual partners. Adult PLWH were recruited from care settings in a southeastern U.S. city. Participants reported their sexual behavior for 28 consecutive days via text message prompts. We employed multilevel covar

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To review the literature regarding PrEP and sexual behaviour change in MSM.
BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV has been available since 2012. Even so, pre-exposure prophylaxis has not been widely accepted among healthcare providers and men who have sex with men some of whom are convinced that pre-exposure prophylaxis decreases condom use and increases sexually transmitted infections.
DESIGN: A systematic review of the state of the evidence regarding the association of pre-exposure prophylaxis with condom use, sexually transmitted infection incidence and change

The purpose of this study was to understand how bear identity influenced condom use during the last anal sex event. Participants were recruited to complete an online, anonymous self-report survey through bear-related sexual and social networking websites. A total of 1,080 men who identified as gay or bisexual and as a member of the bear community and were 18 years or older completed the survey. Overall, fewer than a third of men reported condom use during the most recent receptive (28%) and insertive (30%) anal sex event. Men in bear concordant pairings were less likely to use a condom during

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: HIV epidemic spread continues among gay, bisexual, and other MSM globally in 2013. These epidemics are occurring in rapidly shifting contexts among these men, which have important impacts on HIV spread, HIV programs, access to services and human rights. Current HIV prevention strategies are inadequate and are taken to insufficient scale to control HIV spread.
RECENT FINDINGS: We reviewed recent reports on epidemiology, HIV prevention advances, human rights, and epidemic disease control among MSM to understand why HIV epidemics among these men remain poorly controlled. Netwo

Heterosexual men's sexual safety behavior is important to controlling the U.S. epidemic of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). While sexual safety is often treated as a single behavior, such as condom use, it can also be conceptualized as resulting from multiple factors. Doing so can help us achieve more nuanced understandings of sexual risk and safety within partner-related contexts. We used latent class analysis with data collected online from 18- to 25-year-old heterosexually active U.S. men (n = 432) to empirically derive a typology of the

The Young Men's Project has been working with young men and young fathers as part of Great Yarmouth Primary Care Trust in the UK since June 2001. The Project works in schools and other educational environments to promote positive personal development, particularly around sex and relationships, and to increase accessibility of sexual health and contraceptive services, and support for young fathers. Young men generally want to look after themselves and to act responsibly in sexual relationships. Knowledge through education and appreciation of how to understand and express themselves as men are c

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is usually transmitted via the parenteral route, but there are widely discrepant findings on its possible sexual transmission. Thus there are no recommendations concerning protected sex for couples in which only one partner is HCV-infected. Whether HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases could favour HCV transmission remains unclear, but recent data suggesting an increasing incidence of acute HCV in HIV-infected men underline the major public health implications of this issue.
CASE REPORTS: Between June 2002 and July 2003, five HIV-infected homosexually
