Sporadic diploid gynogenetic fry resulted from fertilization with gamma-irradiated sperm. Their frequency increased appreciably when thermal shock treatments, beginning during the first hour of development (--0.4 degrees C lasting 6 hrs 45 min; 26-30 degrees C lasting 10 min), were used. When the eggs were fertilized with normal sperm, a good triploidization rate was induced by means of heat shocks (27-30 degrees C lasting 10 min). It is supposed that the retention of the second polar body caused the gynogenetic diploidy observed.

Six triploid individuals were found in a full-sib family of 11 adult rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) from a domesticated hatchery stock. The triploid individuals were normal in size and external appearance, had underdeveloped gonads, and showed no evidence of 3n/2n chimerism or mosaicism. XXY triploids were males, suggesting that the Y chromosome is male determining in trout. Because they may avoid production losses associated with sexual maturation in normal fish, triploid trout and salmon could potentially be useful in fish culture.

Pesticide formulations containing pyrethrins are being used to treat salmonids for infestations of the copepod parasites Lepeophtherius salmonis and Caligus elongatus (sea lice). The acute lethality of one such formulation to four larval stages of the American lobster (Homarus americanus), a species of significant economic importance in eastern Canada, was determined. Rainbow trout and specimens of pond mud were collected from three fish farms and examined for the presence of Clostridium botulinum. Two of the farms were constructed with concrete channels and one was mud-bottomed. Cl. botulinum was isolated only from the mud-bottomed farm (24% of muds), and the isolates were all non-proteolytic type B. The implications of the presence of Cl. botulinum spores in the mud of fish farms is discussed.

The Muchalat Inlet, British Columbia, is among the most westerly points at which aquaculture is practiced in Canada. In this paper, we summarise data from over 18000 wild fish sampled at 16 sites over an 8 yr period, between 2004 and 2011.
