In this study, the role of the signalling molecule nitric oxide (NO) in magnetopriming-mediated induction of salinity tolerance in soybean seeds is established. The cross-talk of NO with germination-related hormones gibberellic acid (GA), abscisic acid (ABA) and auxin (IAA) for their ability to reduce the Na+/K+ ratio in the seeds germinating under salinity is highlighted. Salt tolerance index was significantly high for seedlings emerging from magnetoprimed seeds and sodium nitroprusside (SNP, NO-donor) treatment. The NO and superoxide (O2•-) levels were also increased in both of these treatme

Malus hupehensis Rehd. var. pingyiensis Jiang (Pingyi Tiancha, PYTC) is an excellent apple rootstock and ornamental tree, but its tolerance to salt stress is weak. Our previous study showed that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) could alleviate damage in M. hupehensis roots under alkaline salt stress. However, the molecular mechanism of H2S mitigation alkaline salt remains to be elucidated. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important regulatory roles in plant response to salt stress. Whether miRNAs are involved in the mitigation of alkaline salt stress mediated by H2S remains unclear. In the present study, through

The roles of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in signalling transduction of stomatal closure induced by salt stress were examined by using pharmacological, spectrophotographic and laser scanning confocal microscopic (LSCM) approaches in Vicia faba L. Salt stress resulted in stomatal closure, and this effect was blocked by H2S modulators hypotaurine (HT), aminooxy acetic acid (AOA), hydroxylamine (NH2OH), potassium pyruvate (C3H3KO3) and ammonia (NH3) and H2O2 modulators ascorbic acid (ASA), catalase (CAT), diphenylene iodonium (DPI). Additionally, salt stress induced H2S gen

We have previously shown that Listeria monocytogenes, a causative agent of listeriosis, can produce membrane vesicles (MVs) during in vitro culture. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of MVs from L. monocytogenes cultured with or without salt stress to induce cytotoxicity and pro-inflammatory responses in colon epithelial Caco-2 cells. MVs were purified from wild-type L. monocytogenes 10403S strain and an isogenic ΔsigB mutant strain. MVs from both wild-type and ΔsigB mutant strains increased viability of Caco-2 cells regardless of salt stress. Both MVs from wild-type and Δsi

Their sessile lifestyle means that plants have to be exquisitely sensitive to their environment, integrating many signals to appropriate developmental and physiological responses. Stimuli ranging from wounding and pathogen attack to the distribution of water and nutrients in the soil are frequently presented in a localized manner but responses are often elicited throughout the plant. Such systemic signaling is thought to operate through the redistribution of a host of chemical regulators including peptides, RNAs, ions, metabolites, and hormones. However, there are hints of a much more rapid co

Dehydration responsive element binding proteins (DREB) are members of a larger family of transcription factors, many of which have been reported to contribute to plant responses to abiotic stresses in several species. While, little is known about their role in potato (Solanum tuberosum). This report describes the cloning and characterization of a DREB transcription factor cDNA, StDREB2, isolated from potato (cv Nicola) plants submitted to salt treatment. Based on a multiple sequence alignment, this protein was classified into the A-5 group of DREB subfamily. Expression studies revealed that St

Soil salinization is a critical environmental challenge threatening plant survival. To adapt, certain plants have evolved tolerance to highly saline-alkali environments through long-term natural selection. Tamarix chinensis L., a typical halophyte with strong adaptability to salt and alkali stresses, serves as an essential germplasm resource and pioneer species for ecological conservation and remediation. However, the epigenetic mechanisms underlying its stress tolerance remain poorly understood. In this study, we systematically characterized the tolerance and genome-wide DNA methylation varia

RING box Protein 1 (Rbx1) is a RING-domain protein that serves as the catalytic core of the SKP1-Cullin1-F-box (SCF) ubiquitin ligase complex. It is implicated in the ubiquitination process during plant self-incompatibility, growth, and abiotic stress responses. Two Arabidopsis Rbx1 homologous genes, designated ClRbx1-1 and ClRbx1-2, were identified in the genome of 'Xiangshui' lemon. Both ClRbx1 genes are highly expressed in pollen, furthermore, their expression was generally upregulated under self-pollination compared to cross-pollination conditions. Additionally, under simulated salt stress

Salinity stress is a well-known abiotic stress that has been shown to have a negative impact on crop growth, production, and soil richness. The current study was intended to ameliorate salt stress in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.), keeping in mind the detrimental influence of salt stress. A pot experimentation was executed on B. juncea to examine the efficacy of exogenous application of triacontanol (TRIA) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) (NaHS donor), either alone or in combination, on growth attributes, metabolites, and antioxidant defense system exposed to salt stress at three distinct conce

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) arouse an increasing interest as an eco-friendly solution for improving crop tolerance to environmental stresses. In this study, we report the characterization of a novel halotolerant PGPR strain (named C2) identified in a screen of rhizospheric bacterial isolates from southeast of Tunisia. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain C2 is most likely affiliated to the genus Siccibacter with Siccibacter turicensis as the closest species (98.19%). This strain was able to perform phosphate solubilization and production of indole acetic acid (IAA), siderop

Pancratium maritimum (Amaryllidaceae) is a bulbous geophyte growing on coastal sands. In this study, we investigated changes in concentrations of metabolites in the root and leaf tissue of P. maritimum in response to mild salt stress. Changes in concentrations of osmolytes, glutathione, sodium, mineral nutrients, enzymes, and other compounds in the leaves and roots were measured at 0, 3, and 10 days during a 10-day exposure to two levels of mild salt stress, 50 mM NaCl or 100 mM NaCl in sandy soil from where the plants were collected in dunes near Cuma, Italy. Sodium accumulated in the roots,

BACKGROUND: The 26S proteasome, canonically composed of multi-subunit 19S regulatory (RP) and 20S core (CP) particles, is crucial for cellular proteostasis. Proteasomes are re-modeled, activated, or re-localized and this regulation is critical for plants in response to environmental stresses. The proteasome holoenzyme assembly and dissociation are therefore highly dynamic in vivo. However, the stoichiometric changes of the plant proteasomes and how proteasome associated chaperones vary under common abiotic stresses have not been systematically studied.
RESULTS: Here, we studied the impact of

BACKGROUND: Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis, a frequently occurring disease in northeastern Thailand, where soil and water high in salt content are common. Using microarray analysis, we previously showed that B. pseudomallei up-regulated a short-chain dehydrogenase/oxidoreductase (SDO) under salt stress. However, the importance of SDO in B. pseudomallei infection is unknown. This study aimed to explore the function of B. pseudomallei SDO, and to investigate its role in interactions between B. pseudomallei and host cells.
RESULTS: Bioinformatics analysis of B. p

BACKGROUND: Salt stress is a major abiotic stress limiting soybean production, with the seedling stage being the most salt-sensitive period. Elucidating the growth, photosynthetic, and physiological response mechanisms of soybean seedlings to salt stress holds significant theoretical value for breeding salt-tolerant cultivars.
METHODS: In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of varying NaCl stress intensities (0-160 mmol⋅kg⁻¹) on plant growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidant physiology, and ion homeostasis using a salt-tolerant cultivar (Zh

Cold acclimation of young maize plants induced a light-dependent, organ-specific reprogramming at the metabolomic and gene expression levels, which significantly altered responses to salinity. It has been shown that light plays a decisive role in cold acclimation in plants. The core objective of the present work was to elucidate how light conditions during cold acclimation affect subsequent salt stress responses by co-regulating various processes among organs maize (Zea mays L.). Plants were cold-acclimated under sufficient light or shade and subsequently exposed to severe cold or salinity. Or

Soil salinity is a critical abiotic stress that severely constrains rice productivity and threatens global food security. Phospholipase D (PLD) enzymes play pivotal roles in plant stress signaling; however, the specific function of OsPLDβ1 in rice salt stress responses remains unclear. We here investigated the role of OsPLDβ1 using knockout mutants to elucidate its regulatory function under saline conditions. Ospldβ1-mutant lines exhibited substantially improved salt tolerance in contrast to wild-type plants. Improved tolerance was associated with elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) scaveng

BACKGROUND: Soil salinity is one of the most critical abiotic stressors limiting global agricultural productivity by adversely affecting plant physiology, nutrient dynamics and soil health. Excessive accumulation of soluble salts disrupts osmotic balance, induces ionic toxicity and elevates oxidative stress, thereby impairing plant metabolism and soil ecological stability. In recent years, biochar and engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as innovative and sustainable soil amendments capable of mitigating salinity-induced deterioration in agroecosystems. Biochar improves soil structure,

Soil salinity severely limits crop growth and yield. Deciphering the molecular basis of salt tolerance is thus critical for enhancing food security. We previously identified the SRL10-CATB module in leaf development and thermotolerance. Here, we reveal an additional, essential role for OsSRL10 in salt stress adaptation. OsSRL10 overexpression confers enhanced seedling-stage salt tolerance by promoting ROS scavenging and suppressing Na+ accumulation. Mechanistically, SRL10 physically interacts with the histidine phosphotransfer protein AHP2, a known positive regulator of salt tolerance. Genetic
