Volatile organic compounds from the salt-tolerant Glutamicibacter halophytocola KLBMP 5180 enhance salt stress tolerance in tomato seedlings by regulating antioxidant defense, ion homeostasis, and auxin, jasmonic acid/ethylene signaling pathways.

The application of salt-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) represents a promising strategy to alleviate salt stress in crops. However, the mechanisms by which volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from actinomycetes mitigate salinity stress remain unclear. In this study, exposure to VOCs from the halotolerant actinomycete Glutamicibacter halophytocola KLBMP 5180 significantly promotes the growth of tomato seedlings under salt stress, as evidenced by increased fresh weight, lateral root number, and chlorophyll content. Physiological analyses show that VOCs exposure reduces oxidati

Overexpression of the tomato SlLEA_2-26 gene enhances the tolerance to drought and salt stresses in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are pivotal in conferring cellular tolerance to abiotic stresses and sustaining plant growth and development. However, systematic functional characterization of the tomato SlLEA_2 gene family remains limited. To elucidate the role of tomato SlLEA_2-26 in abiotic stress responses, this study cloned its full-length cDNA. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis revealed that SlLEA_2-26 exhibits predominant expression in flowers and fruits, and is strongly induced by drought, salt, Cu2+, and Pb2+ stresses. Three homozygous Arabidopsis thaliana T3 Sl

BolMYB122-BolTGG1 module enhances salt stress tolerance via accelerating the hydrolysis of glucosinolates to produce sulforaphane in broccoli.

Glucosinolates (GSLs), one type of secondary metabolites mainly enriched in cruciferous plants, play important roles in environmental stress responses. However, the function and regulatory mechanism of GSLs in combating salt stress in broccoli are largely unclear. In this study, BolTGG1, a member of β-thioglucoside glucohydrolase (TGG) genes mainly functioning to hydrolyze GSLs, was identified in broccoli. BolTGG1 expression was upregulated under salt stress. Overexpression of BolTGG1 significantly improved the tolerance to salt stress in both broccoli and Arabidopsis. Subsequently, BolTGG1 wa

Pan-genomic analysis of alternative polyadenylation reveals a 3'UTR remodeling regulatory layer controlling salt tolerance in rice.

Alternative polyadenylation (APA) generates mRNA isoforms with variable 3'UTR lengths, yet its genetic basis and functional significance at the population level remain unexplored in plants. Here, we present the population-level APA landscape and the APA quantitative trait loci (3'aQTL) map in rice, through profiling of over 200 rice accessions under normal and salt-stress conditions. We identified 19,938 and 22,251 APA events under normal and salt-stress conditions, respectively, and demonstrate that salt stress globally induces 3'UTR shortening via proximal polyA site selection, which can rel

Cyclic nucleotide-gated channels 14, 15, and 16 coordinate multiple signaling pathways to promote salt tolerance in rice.

Plants activate osmotic regulation, ion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis modulation, and plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA)-mediated stomatal movement regulation for survival under salt stress. However, it is unknown if and how a single molecule coordinates multiple responses. Here we characterized the functions of three closest homologs, cyclic nucleotide-gated channel 14, 15, and 16 (OsCNGC14/15/16), in regulating multiple signaling pathways in response to salt. Mutants of each of these three genes had reduced salt tolerance compared to the wild type. These mutants also had slowe

Loss of AtPLC1 Impairs Salt-Alkali Tolerance via Disruption of Stomatal Regulation and Redox Homeostasis in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Soil salinization poses a major environmental threat to global agriculture, affecting approximately 20% of cultivated land and 50% of irrigated land worldwide. Developing salt-alkali tolerant plant varieties represents a sustainable strategy for utilizing these marginal lands. Phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) is a key enzyme in the phosphoinositide signaling system and has been implicated in plant stress responses; however, its function under salt-alkali stress remains poorly understood. In this study, the function of AtPLC1 in salt-alkali tolerance was investigated, and

Screening of salt tolerance of maize (Zea mays L.) lines using membership function value and GGE biplot analysis.

Soil salinization is a widely recognized global environmental concern that has a significant impact on the sustainable development of agriculture at a global scale. Maize, a major crop that contributes to the global agricultural economy, is particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of salt stress, which can hinder its growth and development from germination to the seedling stage. This study aimed to screen highly salt-tolerant maize varieties by using four NaCl concentrations of 0, 60, 120, and 180 mMol/L. Various agronomic traits and physiological and biochemical indices associated with

5-Aminolevulinic acid improves strawberry salt tolerance through a NO-H2O2 signaling circuit regulated by FaWRKY70 and FaWRKY40.

INTRODUCTION: 5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is an essential biosynthetic precursor of tetrapyrrole compounds, naturally occurring in all living organisms. It has also been suggested as a new plant growth regulator. Treatment with ALA promotes strawberry Na+ homeostasis under salt stress. Regulation of this process requires the signaling molecules nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), but the specific signaling cascade and transcriptional regulatory mechanism have not previously been characterized. OBJECTIVES: Our work focused on the dissection of the NO and H2O2 signaling cascade and

Methylphosphonate Degradation and Salt-Tolerance Genes of Two Novel Halophilic Marivita Metagenome-Assembled Genomes from Unrestored Solar Salterns.

Aerobic bacteria that degrade methylphosphonates and produce methane as a byproduct have emerged as key players in marine carbon and phosphorus cycles. Here, we present two new draft genome sequences of the genus Marivita that were assembled from metagenomes from hypersaline former industrial salterns and compare them to five other Marivita reference genomes. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that both of these metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) represent new species in the genus. Average nucleotide identities to the closest taxon were <85%. The MAGs were assembled with SPAdes, binned with MetaBA

Mechanistic Insights of Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria Mediated Drought and Salt Stress Tolerance in Plants for Sustainable Agriculture.

Climate change has devastating effects on plant growth and yield. During ontogenesis, plants are subjected to a variety of abiotic stresses, including drought and salinity, affecting the crop loss (20-50%) and making them vulnerable in terms of survival. These stresses lead to the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage nucleic acid, proteins, and lipids. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have remarkable capabilities in combating drought and salinity stress and improving plant growth, which enhances the crop productivity and contributes to food security. Genome-wide identification of the RLCK gene family in sugarcane and functional analysis of ScRLCK53 in salt tolerance.

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is a major sugar crop, yet its growth and yield are frequently limited by soil salinization. Receptor-like cytoplasmic kinases (RLCKs) act as central signaling hubs in plants, regulating growth, development, immunity, and abiotic stress responses. However, the evolution of the RLCK gene family in sugarcane and its role in salt tolerance remain unclear. Using the high-quality genome of elite cultivar 'Zhongzhe No.1', we identified 262 ScRLCK genes, grouped into 15 subfamilies, all of which contain a typical protein kinase domain. Synteny analysis revealed that whole-g

Genome-Wide and GWAS Dissection of Maize Fibrillin Genes Reveals Plastid Regulators of Drought and Salt Stress Tolerance.

Fibrillins (FBNs) are conserved plastid-associated proteins implicated in plant development and abiotic stress responses; however, their roles in maize remain unclear. In this study, through a genome-wide bioinformatic analysis, we identified 14 ZmFBN genes in the maize genome and characterized their phylogeny, chromosomal distribution, gene structure, conserved motifs, and promoter cis-elements. ZmFBN members were grouped into several subfamilies that all retain a conserved PAP_fibrillin domain, whereas the variation in exon-intron organization, motif composition, and regulatory elements sugg

Genome-Wide Identification of the Soybean GH5 Gene Family and Functional Analysis of GmGH5-22 in Salt Tolerance.

Plant GH5 family genes function in both cell wall biosynthesis and stress responses. However, comprehensive studies on GH5 genes in the soybean remain limited. Here, we identified 28 GmGH5 genes from the soybean genome. Phylogenetic analysis assigned these genes to three subfamilies (I-III), with no representatives in subfamily IV. The GmGH5 family harbors 15 conserved motifs, which are largely similar within subfamilies but differ across subfamilies. Additionally, exon-intron structures (2-7 introns) exhibit clade-specific patterns, with members within the same clade sharing similar intron nu

Identification and preliminary functional characterization of MsPAL2, a key salt-tolerance gene during seed germination in Medicago sativa.

BACKGROUND: Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is an important legume forage crop. Salt stress severely impairs seed germination, compromising field establishment and subsequent seedling growth. However, the key genes underlying alfalfa seed responses to salt stress during germination remain largely unidentified, hindering targeted genetic improvement of salt tolerance within the genus Medicago. RESULTS: In this study, transcriptomic sequencing was performed on germinated and ungerminated seeds of alfalfa treated with 150 mmol/L NaCl, using the 'Zhongmu No. 4' reference genome. Through integrated KEGG

Cloning and functional characterization of OsERFSR1, a negative regulator of salt stress tolerance in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Salt stress is one of the major abiotic factors limiting rice growth, development and yield. In this study, a member of the AP2/ERF transcription factor family, OsERFSR1, was cloned from rice. Overexpression of OsERFSR1 (OE) significantly reduced salt tolerance, with survival rates of 53.2% compared with 70.2% in wild-type (WT) plants, whereas CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout (ko) markedly enhanced salt tolerance, with survival rates of 54.6% compared with 28.2% in WT, suggesting that OsERFSR1 acts as a negative regulator of salt stress tolerance. Physiological analyses revealed that, under salt

Abscisic acid-regulated stability of CmABF1 and CmBRM modulates salt tolerance in chrysanthemum via epigenetic regulation of CmHSFA4.

Soil salinization poses a major threat to global agricultural productivity and plant biodiversity. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is central to plant adaptation to abiotic stress; however, the mechanisms by which ABA coordinates posttranslational modifications of signaling proteins with epigenetic regulation remain poorly understood. Here, we show that salt stress-induced ABA accumulation up-regulates Heat Shock Factor 4 (CmHSFA4), a gene that is known to enhance chrysanthemum salt tolerance. The ABA responsive transcription factor ABRE binding factor 1 (CmABF1) binds to the CmHSFA4 prom

Integrated physiological and multi-omics analyses reveal genotype-specific GABA responses associated with salt tolerance in Brassica rapa.

Soil salinity restricts the yield of winter Brassica rapa, yet it remains unclear whether gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) alleviates salt stress through universal physiological responses or genotype-specific regulatory patterns. To resolve this question, salt-tolerant KY and salt-sensitive Qin were subjected to four treatments: blank control (CK), sole GABA supplementation(G), single salt stress(S), and combined salt stress plus GABA(S+G). Soybean Inositol Polyphosphate 5-Phosphatase 8 Confers Salt Tolerance by Reducing Sodium Influx Through Inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate Signalling.

Evidence suggests that the metabolism of inositol and its derivatives may be involved in various biological processes including salt tolerance, but there has been limited understanding. Ectopic expression of Gs5PTase8, an inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase cloned from wild soybean (Glycine soja), significantly enhanced salt tolerance in cultivated soybean (Glycine max). In this follow up study, the overexpression of Gs5PTase8 was shown to improve salt tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana, soybean hairy roots and composite plants, by preventing sodium (Na+) accumulation and maintainin

Overexpression of PeMIPS1 confers tolerance to salt and copper stresses by scavenging reactive oxygen species in transgenic poplar.

Myo-inositol is a vital compound in plants. As the key rate-limiting enzyme in myo-inositol biosynthesis, l-myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase (MIPS) is regarded as a determinant of the myo-inositol content in plants. The up-regulation of MIPS genes can increase the myo-inositol content, thereby enhancing the plant's resistance to a variety of stresses. However, there are few reports on the roles of myo-inositol and the identification of MIPS in woody trees. In this study, a MIPS gene, named as PeMIPS1, was characterized from Populus euphratica Oliv. The heterologous expression of PeMIPS1 compe
