Ethnopharmacological and Chemical Characterization of Salvia Species Used in Valencian Traditional Herbal Preparations.

In Valencia Region (Spain), some wild and cultivated sages are used for medicinal purposes. Among them, Salvia officinalis subsp. lavandulifolia (SL) is widely employed and known for production of Spanish sage oil and herbal products. Nevertheless, it shares the market with S. blancoana subsp. mariolensis (SB) and, to a lesser extent, with their hybrid S. x hegelmaieri (SH). The knowledge on these two species is far low and confusion between them is possible. The aim of the present paper is to improve the ethnopharmacological, morphological and chemical knowledge of these sages, and to contrib

Chronic food administration of Salvia sclarea oil reduces animals' anxious and dominant behavior.

Recent studies indicate that an oil extract from Salvia sclarea may provide clinical benefits in various pathological conditions. In comparison to extracts from other Salvia species, S. sclarea oil contains twice as much omega-3 fatty acids, which are involved in eicosanoid synthesis pathways, and has been found to contain significant levels of the psychoactive monoterpane linalool. In the present study, we examined the mood stabilizing and anxiolytic-like effects of chronic food administration of S. sclarea oil extract on behavioral and physiological parameters of mice with prominent dominant

Protective mechanism of salvia miltiorrhiza on carbon tetrachloride-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible mechanisms of Salvia miltiorrhiza (Sm) in carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats. Male Wistar rats received a single dose of CCl(4) (2 ml/kg in corn oil, intraperitoneally). Three hours after CCl(4) intoxication, rats received either Sm (100 mg/kg) or silymarin (100 mg/kg) by gastrogavage twice a day for 2 consecutive days. CCl(4)-induced liver damage was shown by significant elevation of serum aminotransferase levels. Additionally, a significant decrease was observed in hepatic microsomal P450 2E1 protein co

Salvia miltiorrhiza inhibits biliary obstruction-induced hepatocyte apoptosis by cytoplasmic sequestration of p53.

Cholestatic liver injury is caused by hepatocellular apoptosis induced by toxic bile salts. We have studied the effects of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, Salvia miltiorrhiza, on apoptotic cell death in bile duct-ligated (BDL) rats. We also attempted to clarify the molecular mechanisms of the hepatoprotective effects of S. miltiorrhiza in this animal model. A water extract of S. miltiorrhiza (Sm-X; 200 mg/kg; po) was administered to BDL rats for 10 days. Rats were euthanized and apoptosis was detected in liver tissue by TUNEL staining. Western blot analysis and immunostaining for alpha-

Hypocotyl acupuncture: an efficient and practical protocol for transformation and genome editing in Salvia miltiorrhiza.

Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is a valuable medicinal plant, yet its genetic manipulation has been limited by the lack of efficient and practical transformation methods. Here, we report a simplified, tissue culture-independent strategy enabling Agrobacterium-mediated gene delivery under non-sterile conditions, termed hypocotyl acupuncture. The method employs needle-assisted inoculation of intact seedlings at the hypocotyl, completely bypassing callus induction, regeneration, and repeated subculture. Following inoculation, EGFP-positive hairy roots are selectively cultivated for approximately 4 mon

Comparative genome analysis provides a foundation for defining salvinorin A biosynthesis in Salvia divinorum.

The synthesis of salvinorin A by Salvia divinorum is of considerable interest for developing pain relief, anti-opioid addiction and antidepressant medications, but progress has been compromised by limited access to plant material and the complexity of the biosynthetic pathway. Initially using S. splendens, a closely related species, the first steps in the biosynthetic pathway have been elucidated. Here, by preparing a genome sequence for S. divinorum, we are able to undertake comparative genomic analyses with closely related species that do not produce salvinorin A. We establish the genetic ba

Salvia miltiorrhiza: insights on the protective effect and mechanism of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI), a common secondary complication of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), leads to significant psychological and physiological distress in patients. Pathophysiological reactions including inflammatory response, oxidative stress injury, platelet aggregation, vascular endothelial dysfunction, and programmed cell death are involved in the pathogenesis of MIRI. Prolonged use of conventional therapies (e.g., NSAIDs, calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers, and antiplatelet agents) may exacerbate cardiovascular damage due to adverse effects. Thus, identifying

Rapid Screening of Chemical Components in Salvia miltiorrhiza with the Potential to Inhibit Skin Inflammation.

Hyaluronidase possesses the capacity to degrade high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid into smaller fragments, subsequently initiating a cascade of inflammatory responses and activating dendritic cells. In cases of bacterial infections, substantial quantities of HAase are generated, potentially leading to severe conditions such as cellulitis. Inhibiting hyaluronidase activity may offer anti-inflammatory benefits. Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, a traditional Chinese medicine, has anti-inflammatory properties. However, its effects on skin inflammation are not well understood. This study screened and

HPLC-based activity profiling of Salvia miltiorrhiza for MAO A and iNOS inhibitory activities.

In the course of a screening of plant extracts for potential CNS and anti-inflammatory activities, a dichloromethane extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza showed a pronounced inhibitory effect on recombinant monoamine oxidase A (MAO A) and on inducible NO synthase (iNOS) induction in Raw 267.4 cells. With the aid of HPLC-based profiling techniques, activities could be linked, to a significant extent, to peaks of tanshinone-type diterpenoids, four of which were subsequently isolated. The IC50 of the most active compound, 15,16-dihydrotanshinone I, on human recombinant MAO A was at 23 microM, and 2.4 m

The "habitat-phytochemistry-pharmacological effect" nexus: a multidimensional review of ethnomedicinal Salvia in China.

BACKGROUND: The genus Salvia L. constitutes a core medicinal resource in China's diverse ethnic medical systems. However, a systematic and comparative understanding of how ecological adaptation-particularly among high-altitude ethnomedicinal species-translates into specific ethnomedicinal value remains lacking. OBJECTIVE: To address this gap, we developed and validated a "habitat-phytochemistry-pharmacological effect" linkage model, testing the hypothesis that environmental stressors driven by altitudinal gradients induce chemical differentiation among Salvia species, which in turn underlies
