Genetic diversity of noroviruses and sapoviruses in children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Human caliciviruses, including norovirus (NoV) and sapovirus (SaV), are recognized as common pathogens that cause acute viral gastroenteritis in children and adults throughout the world. To gain an overview of molecular epidemiology of human caliciviruses in children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from 2002 to 2004, NoV and SaV were detected and characterized molecularly for identification of their genotypes. From a total of 248 fecal specimens collected, 35 (14.1%) were positive for NoV GII genogroup. Among the 35 NoV GII, GII/4 was the most predominant genot

Potentially Pathogenic Organisms in Stools and Their Association With Acute Diarrheal Illness in Children Aged <2 Years.

BACKGROUND: Acute diarrheal illness (ADI) causes a substantial disease burden in high-income countries. We investigated associations between potentially pathogenic organisms in stools and ADI by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in Australian children aged <2 years. METHODS: Children in a community-based birth cohort had gastrointestinal symptoms recorded daily and stool samples collected weekly until their second birthday. Diarrhea was defined as ≥3 liquid or looser than normal stools within a 24-hour period. PCR assays tested for 11 viruses, 5 bacteria, and 4 protozoa. Detections of a new org

Occurrence of viral gastroenteritis in children below 5 years: A hospital-based study from Assam, India.

Viral gastroenteritis is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in children under 5 years of age. Many a time, these cases go unnoticed causing immense scarcity of data on viral diarrhoea. The study aimed to determine the occurrence of viral gastroenteritis among children below 5 years and the aetiological viral agents. Stool samples were collected from patients suffering from acute gastroenteritis. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was done for detection of rotavirus, adenovirus, norovirus, astrovirus and sapovirus. Viruses were detected in 55% of children. Adenovirus was found to be

Prevalence and genetic diversity of enteric viruses in Sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus A (RVA), norovirus (NoV), human astrovirus (HAstV), and sapovirus (SaV) are the main viruses responsible for acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Among them, RVA is generally the most prevalent, predominantly in Sub-Saharan Africa. With the introduction of RVA vaccines, several epidemiological changes have been reported in cases of viral gastroenteritis, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, it is essential to understand the current burden and diversity of these viruses in order to guide public health interventions and vaccination strategies in the region. OBJECTIVE:

Use of dual priming oligonucleotide system-based multiplex RT-PCR combined with high performance liquid chromatography assay for simultaneous detection of five enteric viruses associated with acute enteritis.

In this study, a specific and sensitive method for simultaneous detection of human astrovirus, human rotavirus, norovirus, sapovirus and enteric adenovirus associated with acute enteritis was developed, based on the specific dual priming oligonucleotide (DPO) system and the sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The DPO system-based multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) combined with HPLC assay was more sensitive than agarose gel electrophoresis analysis and real-time SYBR Green PCR assay, and showed a specificity of 100% and sensitivity

Serological Humoral Immunity Following Natural Infection of Children with High Burden Gastrointestinal Viruses.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, resulting in an estimated 440,571 deaths of children under age 5 annually. Rotavirus, norovirus, and sapovirus are leading causes of childhood AGE. A successful rotavirus vaccine has reduced rotavirus hospitalizations by more than 50%. Using rotavirus as a guide, elucidating the determinants, breath, and duration of serological antibody immunity to AGE viruses, as well as host genetic factors that define susceptibility is essential for informing development of future vaccines and improving current vaccine candid

Human caliciviruses and pediatric gastroenteritis.

Surveillance using molecular diagnostic methods developed in the past decade shows that human caliciviruses, particularly the Noroviruses, are the most important cause of pediatric acute gastroenteritis, next to rotavirus. Noroviruses also cause severe gastroenteritis in children, requiring hospitalization. The Sapovirus, a morphologically and genetically distinct genus of calicivirus, cause mainly milder endemic pediatric gastroenteritis. Noroviruses and Sapoviruses are genetically and antigenetically diverse, and multiple genetic types cocirculate in the same community. Human caliciviruses s

Molecular characterization of calicivirus strains detected in outbreaks of gastroenteritis in Argentina.

Eight outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis occurred in Argentina in 2004 were tested for the presence of Calicivirus, Rotavirus and Astrovirus as possible causative agents. Caliciviruses were found in 39 out of the 100 tested samples, followed by six Astrovirus-positive samples and two Rotavirus-positive samples. Thirty-seven out of the 39 Calicivirus-positive samples were typed as Norovirus while the remaining two were typed as Sapovirus. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of 13 Norovirus-positive samples revealed the presence of strains from the genogroups GI, GII, and GIV. Six Norovirus strai

Co-speciation and host-switching drives diversity of picornaviruses and sapoviruses in Malagasy fruit bats.

Bats are reservoir hosts for numerous well-known zoonotic viruses, but their broader virus-hosting capacities remain understudied. Picornavirales are an order of enteric viruses that cause disease across a wide range of mammalian hosts, including Hepatitis A in humans and foot-and-mouth disease in ungulates. Host-switching and recombination drive the diversification of Picornavirales worldwide. Picornaviridae and Caliciviridae (families within Picornavirales) have been described in bats across mainland Africa, but surveillance for these viruses has been rare in the Southwest Indian Ocean Islan
